Please advise people on this site not to use DMSO if you’re using any kind of deodorizing or cleansing wipes of any kind on your dog. My baby girl ( Mini Dachshund ) jumped off the couch and tweaked her back bad enough to where her back legs are paralyzed. Hopefully temporarily. And I had the scare of a lifetime this evening when I went to apply the DMSO on her back her fur started to smoke and began getting hot to the touch. I quickly doused her with a cold wet towel to wipe it all off. Just a word of caution not to be taken lightly. Thank

Watched a good family movie last night 'Goodbye My Lady' with Walter Brennen and Brandon Dewild. It's about a boy and his rescued dog - a Basenji, made about 1956 - Black and White.

After seeing that very movie we saw a young boy bring a sign to the edge of the road 'Basenji pup for sale' and we bought it. Long story short we ended up getting another, a female, and showed them to their championships and opened a kennel. Had 35 at one time. That was 40 years ago. Hadn't thought of 'Goodbye my lady' for a long time. I'm smiling now.

As you can see, I wrote the story about my precious Basenji - Bakagi, whom I also call 'little one'. We absolutely love 'Farewell my Lady'. She looks just like our little girl. It is amazing the world has not discovered these amazing little creatures. I consider them to be one of God's best kept secrets! Ours attracts attention wherever she goes. People are stunned when I tell them she is the oldest breed in the world! Imagine being around during the time of the Pharaohs and being able to live with one of these beautiful , elegant little dogs. I consider the Basenji breed to mean: Beautiful Amazing Stunning Elegant Natural Joyful Intelligent (the 1st letter of each of these words put together spells BASENJI). Can you tell I am a forever fan? Would LOVE to have a puppy!

I know this is quite some time since you wrote your comment, but thank you, Larry. We rescued our girl from Colorado Basenji Rescue. We own 'Goodbye my Lady' and coincidentally live in Colorado where Brandon de Wilde was killed crossing a street in Denver (where I am from) in 1972. He was 30 years old. The Basenji - My Lady of the Congo (her double in the film was often her little brother My Lord of the Congo and Flageolet of the Congo), who starred in the film with Brandon. My Lady curiously bonded with Brandon which later caused him to adopt her. When I say 'curious', it is because I live with a rescued female Basenji and the breed is known to only truly bond with ONE (1) individual. My Lady of the Congo, a six-month-old Basenji puppy was owned by Miss Veronica Tudor-Williams of Molesey, England which normally means she would have bonded with her owner. Nevertheless, it is wonderful Brandon was able to take her with him.

I have discovered that beagles find upright pianos very tasty. Our beagle, Daisy, liked to nibble on the keys while we ate dinner. Thus, we had music while eating, and Daisy loved the noise she could make. Daisy no longer plays piano, as she is now almost eleven years old. I'm pretty sure she's off pretending to be famished as my sister finishes her breakfast.

Hi Ellie, We have a GBGV also. He is our first. We always had Rotties or Danes, but now me being in a wheel chair, when our last BIG guy died we found this guy from Sidekick Kennels in Florida at the recomendation of the Dane breeder in Va.This could happen in any setting. We live in the woods so this is life and death. After he mastered obedience training I got him a Sportsdog brand training collar, and we use the vibration and beeping settings to help him learn our property lines. Works very well. We have never used the shock and would only in extreme danger such as a bear, bob cat, or coyote. Rufus is mr. Personality plus, happy happy, boy, loves all people and all living things.Wonderful companion. There is a GBGV club on line.Corey Bennedict and Brent Humphries are the breeders and would be overjoyed to hear from you!

I had a male beagle from a pet store for 13 years until he died of cancer. I also saved a 5 month old beagle mix from a bad home a year later. She lived for 12 years (even though she had many problems such as hypothyroidism and then later in life she developed diabetes and blindness). They were wonderful dogs and were very close to each other. They were very good with my boys. The problems that I had were the peeing especially when I would go out. I had to crate them everytime I would go out. They also dig up your yard horribly! A fence is a necessity, though you must chip them because they will dig under the fence and get out. Beagles are very cute, affectionate, and funny. They can be mischievous, and they act like they are starving all of the time. They cannot get enough food, and will even dig in garbage to get some! I recently adopted a beagle/shepard mix from the shelter. She is almost a year old and she is incredible with my 15 year old Autistic son and especially with my almost 2 year old Down Syndrome son. At times, he has gone up and smacked her, and she just rolls on her back and lets him, then licks his face to say it's ok and she understands. People considering this breed should be patient people who love animals. Beagles can be trained, but they kindly resist for a while. Beagles want to be a big part of a family, so you should be home a lot and include them in outings. A chest leash is important because a neck leash will choke them as they pull with their nose to the ground. Remember to check and clean their ears often, and when their ears get wet, dry them inside and out thoroughly.
Overall, a beagle is a great choice with the right owner and family.

We rescued a four-year-old female Basenji from Colorado Basenji Rescue (WONDERFUL organization - only Basenji rescue within a five-state region) five years ago. At the time, her name was 'Pretty Girl'. We have a very good freind (the Priest who married us) from the Congo from where Basenjis originated. We asked him to name her in his Congolese Dialect. Her name is Muana wa Bakagi Mulenga. She answers to 'Bakagi'. She is absolutely one of the most amazing 'creatures' with whom I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my life. I would never have any other 'dog' other than a Basenji. They are no less than amazing. We go to a Rescue Reunion every year where there are sometimes 50+ dogs and NO barking! There are yodeling contests, dancing contests, etc. but spending those few hours with that many of God's special creatures is an UNBELIEVABLE treat! Thank you Peggy for all that you have done and continue to do in rescuing these amazingly beautiful creatures!

I refused to allow my husband get a beagle for 22 years despite numerous requests. Then in a weak moment I agreed to it. He grew up with beagles. In short order I learned to love their quirky personalities. I had a golden retriever and took him through many obedience levels. When I attached a lead to our first beagle, he laid down and looked pathetic. I taught him 6 tricks in 4 days and no issues with getting him potty trained. So he was trainable. He leads nicely now I just had to remain patient and persistent. We now have 4 indoor beagles that enjoy our fenced in backyard. I wrote a book about their funny antics. They are immature so keep working with them. Look for it soon. Marlow and a Gaggle of Beagles for Me. They make us laugh every single day. Appears first in the Rabbit Hunter magazine 9/2015. Good luck with your beagle.

I would wait at least the three weeks if she were mine, maybe even longer just so she has enough some space to adjust to her loss.

I also had the same problem with my dog. Jack died and I only had Flap left. I took Flap to play dates where there were puppies so that she would find her own friend. It helped. Find a breeder that will let you bring JuJu to the house to meet puppies. Don't wait. The longer you do, JuJu may just pass too. Dogs get BROKEN HEARTS just like humans. Good luck
