My oscar fish is nine inches and I have hoplosternum littorale that is a 9 inches and syndontis ocellifer that is 8 inches and a common pleco that is 9 inches and they all eat the feeder fish but the pleco. My hoplo catfish begs me for food. The fish tank is 55 gallon.

Hi,, I have bought a pair of alounocara red peacock, ( Rubin ) and I joined him with other tank mates as,
2 lemmon cichlid
2 blue zebra cichlid
2 venustus
2 parrot
1 fontosa

Everything seems fine but the venustus seems to be upset with him. He can't stop darting on them,, although I have many hiding spaces and all that, what shall I do :(

I included articles on the various fish you have in your tank. The Venustus has a predatory nature and it is recommended you have a 60 gallon tank when they are little and 125 gallon as they mature. They want a lot of space. Could this be the problem. You have a good number of fish. How big is your tank?

If I were you I would move the venustus to another tank. I have africans. I had 2 pair of orange blotch peacocks, 2 pair of deep water haps (pladichromis electra), a jewel cichlid, pleco, and a juvenile ruby crystal peacock. Guess what? All I have is a ruby crystal peacock and the pleco. The ruby crystal killed everything except for the orange blotch male and the jewel cichlid they died from my water quality. African cichlids are very agressive he's probably gonna tear your peacocks up. If i was you I would move them or the vunustus cichlid..

Good info until you said the Orinoco Altum is a cross/tank bred species. The Orinoco Altum comes from the Orinoco river basin......... That breed is not a man made creation that is a wild varation of fish.....

I have a pair of blue acara , I love these fish, I am a little confused over their sex. Is there a big difference in their size. The larger has a squarer head to its slope , however the smaller is more oval rounded like, it is also extremely more darker. Their behaviour to each other is somewhat confusing too sometimes very friendly , the next the larger just Persues the smaller. Can anyone offer any further advice . Thanks

Males are larger with extended dorsal and anal fins
  • Wakeem - 2012-09-20
How about the behaviour . Do they always chase each other around?
  • Johnc - 2022-07-08
It's best just to keep one blue acara that way the stress level will be way down and the 1 fish will flourish. Only put 2 in there if you intend on breeding them.

I've had 2 blues for 11 months. The past 3 wks. one of them has been ill. I've done everything! Nobody could give me a answer. It wasn't the water, it wasn't stress, something was wrong with him. Stop eating, breathing heavy, he would stay at the bottom or top & do nothing. The other one didn't know what was wrong with his buddy brother. Next morning he was laying on his side dead! Took out, and his buddy was going crazy looking for him! I felt really bad! Cried most of the day! Anyone know how long it should wait to get a another one? Or not?

melafix and aquarium salt and lots of bubbles
  • Anonymous - 2016-07-18
they like company so asap. i have a tank with 25 of them and they dont like it when one starts acting funny, so i have a little net breeder that i isolate the sick one in and a drop of melafix and a pinch of aquarium salt twice a day. works every time if you catch it at first sign of illness. also quality flake food. no frozen food!!!

Normally these fish do well just individually. I think the other one was more looking for the dead 1 in order to harass him some more. The only time 2 blue a car should be together is during breeding time.

I purchased 4 wild online they were placed in my 75 gallon with two gold Rams 18 Cardinal Tetras and 8 Discus Jouvies. They are rarely all seen together each has an area the defend (But only from the other 3) they have no fear of the Discus, Cardinals or Rams. But chase one another away. They are about 2 months in my tank, and were only 3/4” in size when they arrived (similar to Cardinal Size) they are now each about 1-1/2” but one ( hoping a male) is approaching 2” Personally I find them mesmerizing to watch. And along with my Discus are a great fish.
PS not taking anything away from my Cardinals or Rams…….
It’s a great Hobby …May your Fins be clear and water remain perfect…
