For the tank size, see the Aquarium Setup section above. It not only has the tank size, but describes all the tank parameters!

He will only eat live foods, perhaps try mixing up the offerings... feeder fish one day, worms another.

I have had my scomb and my armatus for over 3 years. These fish are very easily trained to take silversides, dangle the silverside in the water near the top until your payara sees it, then let it loose, if he grabs it, good. But if it hits the bottom, they won't touch it, they only like moving prey, so try again. Also another thing they hate, is lights. my lights are off 100% of the time, with the occasional moon led light. as far as a powerhead, I turn on for a little bit every other day. After a little while they don't like it at all, oh yea, they are 12 inches.

Everybody here is giving people false infromation, I study fish like these on a daily basis, and the Payara - 'Sabe tooth', if taken good care of, they live anywhere between 5-12 years, mine is 6 years old now, so that 6 months - 2 years is silly talk.

Hey Adam, I just recently bought an Scomb (or that's what I was told it was) I was wondering if I could email you for information on identification and care of these fish? All the information I have seen has been conflicting and you seem to know what you're talking about. thanks Carter

Hi guys, I have 1 Payara Armatus about 5 inches & it looks fine in my tank. But I am just worried about his fangs, there is only one left. I do not know how that happened. My question is, will his fangs will grow back or what?

They will drop their teeth as they grow, but it will grow back quickly so no worries.

Probably fine. Scroll up in this Animal World article on the Payara and it actually states in the first paragraph that the bottom (saber tooth) teeth get so long there are actually openings in the upper jaw to accomodate. Sounds like your little guy is getting his first teeth in.

That Means all I have to do is wait untill the crooked teeth drop...? coz I'm really worry that little guy wont eat for fews day edy...sad...

May I ask you how long a life they can have?

Armatus is the true payara where as this species is a much smaller(usually less than a foot) relative.
