Hi Everyone. I bought a Black Ribbon Eel about a year ago and it is doing just fine. It didnt eat for about two months at first, then decided it liked my fire gobies. Now I feed mollies or any other live fish. I recently got a blue ribbon eel that I added to my tank. They are best of friends and the blue eel started feeding within the 1st two weeks. The strangest thing has happened though, the Blue ribbon has now changed color and has turned black. Now that is freaky...

I purchased a Blue Ribbon eel,3 weeks ago.He has been eating Rosies and guppys,but not to many,and refuses to eat except one or two days each week,so far.I noticed that after a few days,it's bright blue,turned more,toward black as well.Since it was fairly new to the aquarium.I assumed it was a sign of stress.I have a Niger Trigger,that competes with it for live food(but they interact very well.any other ideas why it has lost it's bright blue colour.I am a bit concerned.

Moray Eels are very difficult to id... but my best guess is that they are all Gymnothorax kidako, or Chain Link Morays.

I currently have 12" Fimbriated Moray living in a reef tank. I have been very lucky to not have any major incidents.

Make sure you have proper hiding places in at least 2 in different parts of the tank.

Fish in my tank include: Sohal/Yellow/Kole/Naso Tangs, Cherry Grouper, Green Bird Wrasse, Speckled Hawkfish.

Also, the eel loves the cleaner shrimp station. Lets him go all over and inside his mouth.

I have only had him for a short time, but so far so good.

My chainlink hides most of the time until food hits the water. He eats like he is going to the electric chair in the morning. He never bothers other fish unless he is trying to eat and someone polks there snout in his business. My guy loves shrimp and silver sides. The stinkier the treat the more he will love it..very active at night

I have a Ribbon Eel which I believe is the longest-lived Ribbon Eel in captivity. I have had it continuously since around 1985 or 1986, I believe. It has been through at least 3 house moves which were undoubtedly traumatic to it (drain tank, put eel in bucket, etc.).

I feed it 2 dozen feeder guppies a week, once a week, and I keep nothing else in the tank (a 60 gallon) to make sure it is not stressed at all. It is like the Energizer Bunny! I am absolutely amazed at my success in keeping this beautiful creature alive for so long. I wish someone at the Monterey Aquarium or some institution would come study it before it goes!

I have a Juvenile Blue Ribbon Eel still black. This guy has been very easy for me to keep. I have him in my 55 gal tank at my girls house with plenty of life rock, sand bed, (which he never burys himself in), soft corals, LPS, SPS a huge Snowflake Eel, two Tomato Clowns, a Lion Fish, a Huma Huma Trigger, and a Damsel. Seriously anything I put in front of him he'll eat. I have fed him frozen krill, frozen silversides, ghost shrimp, rosey reds from pets mart, gold fish, and small Damsels because I don't like them, and they are a good snack. lol. Does anyone know when he'll turn blue?

You bought a BLACK ribbon eel NOT a BLUE ribbon eel, they look similer when young.

I got one of these guys a week ago. I can't get him to eat. Tried raw shrimp, silversides, ghost shrimp, and rosy reds. I'm gonna try to find some little blue crabs. Other than the feeding problems, make sure you have a nice weight on the tank lid. Mine got out the FIRST night!

If he is older- he may already be set on a "favorite" food, mine was, he tolerated fresh and frozen shrimp / scallops from the grocery store for the first month (probably the novelty of it). I was mixing it up; dried krill then fresh groc store shrimp then froz groc store shrimp. After about 2mos he went on a little hunger strike. I was out of the dried tetra jumbo krill and he wouldnt eat ANYTHING for almost 3 weeks. I bought more dried krill and he's been fine ever since. Our last "hiber-break" (he hides and won't eat like he's hibernating lol) was about 4mos ago. He does it about every 6mos. Levi is 2' 6"- fat- wrinkly :) and seems happy. His eyes seem a little milky so he is probably a lot older than the 4 years I know of. I read they are carrion type eaters in the wild but I have never gotten mine to eat fish ( frozen silversides) or frozen crab.

I have a 3 feet long zebra moray eel I have had him for about 4 years he loves krill and gold fish, I got him for an amazing deal of $40 on craigslist he is in a 110g tank now when I first got him he did not eat for like 3 months, would not eat at all till one day I was trying to feed my snowflake eel and he started to eat so don't freak if he is not eating the next few weeks after just getting him.

HI I had mine for a long long time. I feed him every second day with mussels that I get from the local shop raw nothing added . He eats like a piggy up to 8 every second day and is healty as you can't believe. Try that perhaps that would help. I take the frozen mussels put into some water the morning with some garlic then at night feed him. They normaly don't eat during the day. I have noticed they look for food at night so just before you put the light off for sleeping time feed him.

I have owned Myrichthys maculosus. This eel is from the SAME genus. They do NOT like live items. They are carrion eaters and will be quite happy eating thawed silversides (feed according to their size) and any other thawed fish. They like thawed kill as well. The ONLY problem with these fish is they are escape artists. Gravel will harm them. They need a sand bed FREE of sharp objects like crushed coral. They stay under the sand for several days and come out to eat when hungry. If you must hand feed them, do it near the bottom of the tank so they do not associate the top of the tank with food.... which will lead to their escape. If you DO find yours on the ground, put it back in the tank for an hour or so, as they do go into hibernation if exposed to the air too long.

they WILL NOT eat live fish..... their sense of smell is only tuned into DEAD flesh. PERFECT snake eel for the reef!
