We have an opportunity to adopt a 2yr old gelded stallion tb. He's beautiful and seems sweet. Will he be a good pet? We're not planning to ride very often. Is there a tremendous amount of medical and grooming care required?

Aww good I'm getting a thoroughbred in a couple months any down sides?
  • Hannah - 2011-06-13
Do the 'Thoroughbreds" have to be race horses? I would prefer to just go rising on trails, that sort of thing. And is it possible to get the Appaloosa color in a Thoroughbred? I heard that they do come in that color. But I am not sure? Thanks.

Thoroughbreds don't have to race to be happy and love you. I would imagine most don't just beautiful to appreciate and ride.

I wish I had a horse you are so lucky.

I just adopted a 3yr old track trained but never raced. Yes he is on the pricy side however, he is also VERY sweet and has good manners. Most of their energy that makes them hard for those of us to handle, is energy obtained by injections or feeding hot food. You would never know my TB was track trained. He is very mellow.

I've had my OTTB for 5 years now! He did race and won a few and best of all we got him for free. He is the most gentle sweet animal I have ever had. We let him be a horse for a year or so and then started giving him a job. My 18 years old daughter had an accident on him last year were she fell off him (not his fault, her's) and lacerated her liver. Creston Cat was very sad that she go hurt and mooped around until he could see her again. 2 weeks after her accident I took her up to see him. He perked up big time, I swear he had a smile on his face! She was not supposed to get close to him because of her injuries, but she could not help herself. That horse knew she was still hurt and stayed perfectly still. He let her pet, hug, and walk around him and he did not move at all. We were so afraid of that because on bump and she could have ended back in the hospital. Those two have the tightest bond ever! He even lets her put a hula hoop over his head and on his neck. He loves his work outs....

My family had a Quarter Horse as I was growing up. He was fun to ride but very quick to turn, even when galloping, so you had to be prepared when turning, or get

Get a quarter horse. I ride Western, and have three Quarter Horses and they're all loving.  Great Barrel Racing and Pole Bending Horses. They're bred to ride Western unlike The Fresian which is more of an English Riding Horse.
  • Emily - 2014-09-01
It depends on what you want to do. Friesians are popular for dressage and because they are beautiful. The quarter horse may not be as majestic-seeming, but they are incredible versatile, willing, and sweet. Quarter horses are one of the most popular western horses, and should you want to try a different discipline, your horse will gladly try it with you. As a quarter horse owner who does 7 different disciplines, I definitely say that they are the best of the best :)

I live on a ranch where we raise Quarter horse. A quarter horse is definitely the way to go in my opinion. They are going to be better in the western show ring. If you are going to be doing English then the Friesian would be better. Also if you are on a budget the Quarter horse will be cheaper and easier to find or at least where I'm from that's the case

Just got my first halflinger. She's about 20 and is in a devent size pen with 5 other halflingers. They are all young and bully her. She is sweet and don't defend herself. I'm picking her up tomorrow and she will be all alone. Will she be unhappy being alone or will she be happy not getting picked on?

Should be happy to be in it's new home as long as you give her a lot of attention!
  • Deanne - 2013-03-22
I have a haflinger and he was so miserable when kept on his own I had to move him. He simply loves to b e with others...I suppose they're all different . :)
  • destiny - 2013-11-18
Haflingers are meant be in pairs I have 4 and they get along fine, if one team was to leave they will whinny till they get back.
  • destiny - 2013-11-18
She will need a companion, or you will have to be with her 24/7! lol I have 4.
  • Edith - 2015-05-26
I have had a single mare Haflinger who is so happy being alone! She is sweet, lovable and when ridden, is just a sweetheart. I, too was worried she is alone but have decided not to have such as goat, sheep, mini as we have a coyote, wild dog situation. At any rate, she is very happy alone with a lot of pasture and in at night with hay and water. She too is my first Haflinger.
  • Wendy - 2015-05-26
I rescued my halflinger. After being moved ro several differentry barns, being harassed by other horses, and my not able to be there all the time made a huge problem in his personality. Now, Leo is with me 24/7. He is alone and is so happy. He fetches his bowl to me,tosses ball with me, courtseys, does ring around the rosey, and winnies every time I pull in from work. He is the love of my life. I would never own another breed nor will I ever hurt him by making him share my attention.

Arabians are what we call hard keepers. Because of their high indurance levels and energy, they burn off fat fast. I have to feed my 25+ Arabian/Quarter 4/flakes a day about 24 #s. Also Integrity for seniors. They also have Integrity for young horses. If they loose weight it takes 6 months to a year to get it back. A rice bran product can help put weight on qiucker.
  • Jennifer - 2015-04-14
I have had an Arabian for 22 years. They are not hard keepers. They need adequate food and forage. If he needs to put on weight, try shredded beet pulp. Soak it overnight before you feed it. I rode endurance and kept my horse on good pasture. He did fine with very little grain, and quality hay. I feed grain and hay with the beet pulp over the winter and back off during summer when the pasture is good. Put her on good pasture. She will be happy and healthy.
