I have had an electric blue dempsey for a little over a year. The store where I bought him knew I was keeping a community tank, and have had no problems with him until now. I have 2 species of barbs, chinese algea eaters, 2 pearl gouramis, and had an angel fish until about 3 weeks ago. The dempsey never bothered anyone until I added 2 clown loaches two weeks ago. The dempsey killed one on the loaches last night. Is he just getting aggressive now, or could this be specific to the loaches?

JDs are really amazing. Sometimes I think they can understand me! If you're planning on breeding them, be sure to have the space. The male is 5 inches long and the female about 3.5 inches. They spawned twice in a 20 gal. I moved them from the fry when they were a week old. The parents now reside in their own 55 gallon planted tank. (they totally trashed the place!) Three days later they spawned again! 4th time in 2 months( they will eat the fry if disturbed too much DOH! The fry are really unique and some are blueish with vertical tiger stripes. Food is important and some kinds make your JD and most cichlids aggressive. email me at subject:JACK DEMPSEY and I will send pictures. They are for sale and soon I hope to have a website up. Thanks to the economy I have lots of free time to raise the healthiest fish around.

Do you still have Electric Blue JDs for sale (Apr 2011)? I just lost one that I had for nearly ten years - he was quite large (8-9 inches and well over 1 lb.) and exquisitely beautiful.

Hello. I want to get into the JDs and was wondering if you had any for sale. The electric blues are hard to find at a reasonable price, so I thought I would help out and increase the supply through breeding and lower the price for newbees to the Jack Dempsey world of BLUE!!!! Can you help?

I’m looking to buy some EB JD’s. I’d like to get around 6 young ones (1.5-3”) if anyone knows where I can get them. I live in SW Idaho and would pay to have them shipped here if nothing is available locally. Boise has had them but they are extremely expensive there.

I just bought my Blue Dempsey two days ago. I also have one medium cichlid with three other small cichlids. I knew the medium cichlid would be aggresive to the Dempsey so I got a breeder net to keep the medium cichlid away. Well I just looked and noticed that the smaller ones have been attacking it. I put the Dempsey in the net for safety and let cichlid go loose. Any suggestions?

Yes they can breed. And the babies are out of this world gorgeous. I had an adult Dempsey breed with one of my African chiclids, made a very semi aggressive colorful iridescent blue spotted cross Dempsey/chiclid. Goodluck and get ready for some gorgeous babies:)

Maybe, being such a different animal. But Oscars can be scrappy, so I would keep an eye on it.

I live in Indiana (Indianapolis area). I've got a 125 gal. tank. I have 2 med. sized Oscars. I am interested in the elec. Blue Jack Dempseys. I'd like to buy one or 2 large ones. Does anybody know where I can buy large ones either in a pet store or online? Thanks!

I have an adult male Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, I recently took in a rescue fish its a Kissing Guorami we had them together for about a week before we had to separate them due to my Kisser fish trying to kiss Mr. Jack her lips had bite marks and feeding time was not fair to the Kisser due to Jack not letting her get any food... So my question is what would be a good tank mate for the Kissing Guorami I don't like seeing her all alone! Any suggestions? There both in 40 gallon tanks

The Kissing Gourami can get aggressive when it gets big. See the social behaviors section on this fish's page to get a good feel for companions. One thing you'll read is that keeping them with other fish that are aggressive brings out their own aggression, which is probably what happened when you tried to keep it with this type of cichlid. Most large cichlids are pretty territorial.
