I have 1 Jack at about 4 inches and a Tiger Osacar at about 5 inches in a 40 gallon tank, I just introduced the Oscar and my Jack is pushing him around everywhere, not to much fighting though. If Ocar shows aggresion toward Jack, it is put to an end quickly. For the most part they get along, both are very aggressive and destroy any other living thing that enters the tank!

I have four babies and two big jacks and the big dark bullies flight. One of the male's is a bit bigger, the other a little smaller. Should all six be in the same tank? Plus I put some feeders in so they can be eaten sometimes. I cut them up for the jacks. Am I doing the right thing?

See the 'social behaviors' section up above. If all six are in a really good sized tank, they may be okay. But these fish will tend to pair up and then the pair will not tolerate any others in the same tank. They can also become very belligerent as they age.  Feeders have been known to carry disease, so be sure you quarantine them to make sure they are healthy before you feed them to your cichlids.

I have had a Jack Dempsey for a while now. They are quite aggresive to my Red Devil and 4 blue Acaras. Though he is quite friendly to my two firemouths. They are beautiful fish that need intense care.

Although he is very aggressive he will not let any fish in his tank except this sucker fish which is a lil bigger then he is. He has a spectacular color probably the coolest color iv ever seen. I have 1 jack dempsy, 2 black convicts, 2 jewel cichlids, 1 nicarguense, 1 green terror, 1 geophagus altifrons, and 3 african cichlids in a large tank. My jack is about 7" now, he is exceptionally colorful and is actually one of the least aggressive fish in my tank. He hates when other fish are being aggressive towards each other near him and he will usually chase the aggressor away! He is definitely the boss of the tank.

My Jack Dempsey was one of my favorite fish. It was dark all the time had lot's of shiny blue scales across it's body, face, and fins and had a bit of red on the tip of it's dorsal fin. It just looks awesome when flaring against my other cichlids. A very tough and cool fish!

We have 2 Jack Dempsey, got them both a few months ago at roughly an inch and a half each. Now the one that was slightly bigger is getting really big while the other one hasn't grown much. The big one chases the little one a lot so the little ones always hiding. We've been unsuccessful adding any fish to the tank. They do have amazing color, though!

I had a South American Lungfish for about 2 years, grew to about 2 feet long but it died because it got stuck in one of those log tank decorations and drowned. It was horrible waking up early that morning and seeing his lifeless body stuck in that log. I have to say that if you get one make sure you have nothing they can get stuck it. But if it's already a foot and a half then you need at least a 55gal (probably more then a 100gallon).

It would be so cool to have one of these fish. Thanks for the tip on keeping them safe.

mine got stuck in a terra cotta drain hole, nearly drown, luckily I caught him in time.
now hes recovering with serious lacerations, plus I accidently dropped him and a lot of blood came out of a hole from the lacerations. . I think there was a lot of pressure from the swelling and when he hit the floor he just sort of popped because he looked less swollen after. I'll update if he makes it. He's over a year and over a foot.
