"My daughter and I acquired 2 sliders - one in 2001 and the other in 2002 - and they are thriving. The younger one - Chip - has almost outgrown Ginger and they are about the same size. Ginger is a mellow turtle who greets you when you open the tank and reaches out to you for feeding. Chip on the other hand is a "scardy cat" because he came from an overcrowded turtle environment and trusts no one and tries to bite if he feels threatened. Nonetheless, they both love listening to any kind of music and stop dead in their tracks to "listen in". They love basking in the sun. We have them in a turtle tank in 2 - 3 inches of water. They have 2 seashells they go under when they want to be "cozy". We keep them under a window so they can get some sun. They eat "cold cuts", shrimp treats, insect pellets (in the summer only when they seem to be at peak hunger time) and are basically carnivores even now. I've never seen them eat any plant matter in the tank. They are simply adorable. The tank is a pain to clean, but my daughter is getting used to it! We love our "babies" and I have a picture on my desk of Ginger when she was reaching out for food."
