"I have had a beta fish for exactly a week now. He is in about a 10gallon tank so he has plenty of room to swim. It is lighted, contains a filter, and a few fake plants. For the first few days he seemed fine, but when I came home one day his top fin was tattered. I noticed that the sides of the tank were reflective and that he swims along them constantly, so I bought a background and some tall plants to keep him from seeing his reflection and getting too stressed from seeing what he thinks is another male fish. I first thought stress was the cause of the fin loss, and maybe that he was attacking his own tail thinking it was another fish, but ever since I have blocked the reflective sides his fins have gotten worse. His bottom two fins are starting to look badly tattered now. Each time I look at him he seems worse, but he is swimming just fine and seems happy. I do water changes and I feed him two flakes of food at the beginning and end of the day. I am really worried. This is my first fish, and although I've only had him for a week he feels like family. Is this fin rot or stress?"
