I recently bought micro sword online to add to my 29 Gallon fresh water aquarium. They came in 6 little bunches that looked pretty bad when they came but as they started to mature in my tank they spread like weeds and gave my tank a great natural look. I have a 20 watt POWER-GLO which promotes coral, invertebrate and plant growth. I also added a CO2 defuser to my tank which i feel really promotes plant growth. I am very pleased with the look MicroSword has given my aquarium and would highly recommend this for any planted aquarium.

I feel the same way. If you look around at pet shops you'll notice the differ-ence in condition, sizes and prices of plants. They are slow growing but are very easy to grow. They remain small and make wonderful front plants. If you plant them close together, they fill in nicely. They also wave ever so gently with the current in the tank. "Deborah DeRosa"

Hi I've got a question about that plant. I have got 79.4 Gallon tank no CO2 injection yet, but fine grain Prodac gravel made especially for plants and 160Watt T8 tubes. 3 of them are Osram 840, one is Grolux sylvania for plants and one is Filips Aqua relle. Do you think that in that conditions I can grow sword grass?

Will the water onion be OK with a Betta? Can the bulb be left on the top of the tank to grow?

The Betta should be fine with the plant. They are bulbs, so should be planted in a substrate, but their long leaves will grow to the surface and trail along it.

African Cichlids are mostly rock dwellers or open water swimmers, and many do best in a rock type decor. However some of the Central and South American Cichlids do fine with plants, just read about the behaviors of each fish to make sure that your fish aren't diggers/burrowers. The selection is up to you. You can choose some tall ones for the back of the tank, like Val's, swordplants usually make good mid tank selections, and grasses and small plants like Anubias work well in the forground.

I have 2 amazon swords in my 55 gal tank and they take up about a third of it each. They are a beautiful and easy to care for plant. I have about 3 1/2 inches of eco complete substrate on the bottom and 4 - 4 foot fluorescent tubes above. My 2 siamese algae eaters love lounging on the large leaves. A must have plant but they do grow quite large.

I have had my two Amazon Swords in my fancy goldfish 55-gallon tank for about 3 months now and they have been doing well. All of a sudden, they both developed reddish-brown spots all over the older outer leaves. Have you ever had that happen? They have plenty of roots now and one has produced a shoot with new baby plants on it that I will anchor to the bottom of the tank as they grow larger. I was concerned there might be a disease so I cut off all the leaves with spots on them. What do you think is going on? any reply would be appreciated. thanks.

I have a heavily planted 55 gal aquarium with approx. 48 fish, cory's, cherry barbs and harlequin rasboros. I have a power filter rated for 70 gal tanks but have not changed the filter medium in years with zero ill effects, it is an extremely healthy tank. The filter is starting to get a little noisier and is likely on its last legs. I wonder if I should reinvest in another filter of the same type or since it doesn't require filter media changes for a healthy tank, should I just put in a powerhead for water movement. I also have two robust bubble bars that produce a lot of water agitation.

Wow, you have a wonderful biotope in your aquarium. Sounds like the plants, fish, decor, and possibly the filter media are all working together nicely to keep your tank in great shape. So what to do when the filter motor may be going out is a good question. The media in the filter may be very rich with nitrifying bacteria, which may be helping to keep your tank stable. If that's the case, maybe get the same type filter and keep the existing media... But if you think the media is not contributing to the tanks stability, then loosing the filter may not have an effect. Really hard to say! Personally, between your two choices, I would get a new filter rather than relying on water movement alone for water quality. Generally the old media is replaced, but doing that does take out bacteria and so colonies have to re-establish in the new (takes about 6 weeks). But on the other hand, bacteria lives on all the other decor in the tank as well. So it's really hard to say what consequences there will be in either case with a tank that is as well balanced as yours!

So I planted some Water Onion bulbs a couple of days ago and on some of the bulbs there is some white cloudy stuff starting to appear and I wasn't sure exactly what that was? Should I remove the bulbs? Is this dangerous to my fish? Any information would be helpful and thank you in advance!

The white cloudy stuff is probably mold?
  • tracy - 2014-12-28
does it resemble a blister/bubble? if so, i think it's okay. just means that it's growing :)

I bought some moneywort from petsmart, and a leaf of onion plant made it into the bag (and my tank), do you think this will grow?

Might as well try. Usually they propagate via the offshoot bulbs. I have no idea if a leaf can actually root but no reason not to try. Right?
  • Alan - 2014-03-28
If you haven't got your answer. NO... The leaf will not produce roots with this plant.
