Ear mite infestation is not serious as long as it is treated right away, otherwise they can cause a bacterial infection that will move into the middle and inner ear resulting in a more serious and possibly even fatal condition.

Isolate your infected rabbit because ear mites easily spread and will infect other rabbits. Then thoroughly clean and disinfect the habitat and everything in the habitat; sterilizing the enclosure, bedding, food and water bowls, hides, toys, etc.

Treatment is pretty simple. Ear mites are a parasite known as Psoroptes cuniculi, which is actually a member of the arachnid family. You can use an over-counter remedy such as Rabbit RX or a cat ear mite treatment or you can use oils such as mineral oil, baby oil, or even vegetable oil.

When using oil, you must treat the bunnies ears for at least 4 weeks because this parasite has a 28 day life cycle. Place 2-3 drops in both ears and massage the base of the ears gently. You can use a cotton ball to to coat the inside of the ear. Do a treatment every other day for the first 10 days, and then again on the 14th, 21st and 28the days.

Green foods are important, and the rule-of-thumb is to feed one packed cup of greens for each 2 pounds of weight per day, and more is fine. There's more info about their diet under the feeding section on our Pet Rabbit Care page, which describes green in more detail and has a list of suggested green foods as well. Enjoy!

I have a Himalayan bunny and he is the most friendly, playful, sweet, CUDDLY bunny! He is my baby. Although people say they are the most friendly and I believe that, but truth is every bunny is different. They can be mean, aggressive and some friendly and sweet. Don't rely on Internet and if you really want to find the perfect one spend time with some at the pound. Just my advice. I had no intention on getting a year old white bunny. I wanted a baby, but I saw him at the corner of my eye and I fell in love! He's a big bunny, probably a rare size for a himalayan but he's the best. Good luck to everyone with their bunnies!

I can tell our new bunny is going to be great. My son and I walked into the pet store to buy dog treats ferret food and bearded dragon supplies. My sons comment was cute...'Mom you have to see this rabbit!' We both were smitten. So we walked out with a 'bunny in a box' Okay now I am wondering if you could help guide me on our inside animals introduction. We have a big nice cage that I put HOP in and draped a deep dark purple towel over it. Should I let him get used to his new environment for a couple of days or should I hold him amongst the others. We are going to have to do a lot of reading because we have never had a bunny. I just want his personality to stay the same and do the right thing. If you can help that would be great. If not then maybe someone will read this and possibly give us cues. Thank you, Michelle

Bunnies are great companions for children, but they should be kept at a distance from other pets until they are well aquainted. Dogs and cats can sometimes do fine with a rabbit once they know each other, and with supervision. The ferret however, may or may not be a good companion. Sometimes exotics simply don't acclimate with other animals as well as the domestics, so be careful.

So sorry to hear about your male passing. These rabbits are regularly available though, so you should be able to get another buck with out much trouble. Good luck.

I have a cinnamon breed, she's 8 years old and my best friend. If taken good care of, they can live forever. Just be sure to know what foods to feed them, all bunnies should have a fresh salad daily. I usually give her romaine lettuce (NEVER iceburg), carrots, cilantro, parsley, celery leaves, and apples (her favorite.) Be good to them, they'll be good to you. They need space to run around and lots and lots of love. She's potty trained too :)

I have two one and a half years old mini lops. Their names are Bramble and Crunch. Crunch is ginger with a white belly and Bramble is black, ginger and white. They both have dark brown eyes and they have had lots of offspring. Now I am a rabbit breeder. The tamest rabbit is black and white, she's called Flopsy and she has two lopped ears. ADORABLE!!
