I have a dwarf hamster, and she had babies, the babies are about 26 days old and we just seperated them, I have one of the babies in a cage in my room, and my brothers have the other two babies in a cage in their room, mine seems kinda lonely/agitated, she is running all over trying to find a way out, but the babies my brother have seem to be fine. What should I do about my baby?

A guess would be the baby will just calm down. She is used to being in a litter and can't figure out where they went. Hampsters are not necessarily the most social of creatures as they mature and it is frequently recommended they be in a safe place on their own. Probably just looking for the rest of the team for now but as she matures a little she will probably enjoy her independence and her human.

My daughter's new dwarf chinese hamster had a horrific wheel injury. I cut off half his little nose. I bought the same wheel the people in the store had. Has anyone had a hamster survive this? They kept him at the store so they could give him closer care then we can. My daughter is soo devastated!

I have hamsters but even if I didn't I would give you the same advice please go get that little hamster and get it to a vet. ASAP Just walk back in that store and tell them you want him. The people at that store can not help your hamster only a vet he needs pain meds and ointment and might end up needing antibiotics. I got my hamsters from petco and if it is a petco or petsmart they do not have vets at their stores. If they tell you they do it is a lie and also my son showed me on utube what petsmart and petco does to sick animals at that store. Go on utube look it up it will show you actual videos. If you do not go back for him and he is at one of these stores he will die they will let him die and if he doesnt die fast enough for them they will freeze him. After i saw what they were doing on utube I will not walk back in there stores!!!!

I have a dwarf Chinese hampster and a teddy bear hampster... Can I house them together? Or will they not get along?

General rule is when keeping hampters is to only keep them individually. There can be agression. With such a size difference and the fact that it isn't recommended you keep them together, I souldn't do it.

I just bought 2 teddybear hamsters, one male and one female. Do I have to put them into two separate houses? As of now, I housed them together.

You would normally keep two hampsters in two different cages. If you want them to breed, during her breeding cycle, you would place her in his cage. If she is receptive, they will breed and then you return her to her cage. There is a whole lot of information on the Animal World article attached. Just click on it. It will tell you why you keep them in two different cages and how to set up a breeding enviornment etc. Read the article but yes you should have two different cages.

Take her to the vets they can clip her nails.
  • Editor's Note - 2011-02-19
They sell clippers for small animals at pet stores. They are in both small animal sections and bird sections - they are essentially the same clippers.

You can just clip the very points of the nails off with your own finger nail clippers. Don't clip up to go, just do the points.

I just got a hamster yesterday and put her in her cage but she keeps climbing it and gnawing at the bars. What should I do?

Well I might be getting a hamster soon and I am researching A LOT... and it says if its gnawing on the bars that means it is bored. And if it does it to long, it could damage its teeth and bleed. So I say handle it, give it treats and a ball if you don't have one... Hope this was helpful!

My sister has a hamster named Hawthorne. And we were told that hamsters don't like to climb but he sure does. Do you have platforms in her cage? That might give her something to get to when she gets too high. And just make sure the bedding is soft. Our hamster has fallen from the top corner a few times and he's fine. He just shakes it off.
As far as chewing, get her a chew stick made of wood. And that will hopefully redirect her natural instinct to chew. But unfortunately we can't really get her to stop chewing on the bars altogether if she really wants to.
Buy a wheel, and something else to keep her occupied and she'll be just fine.

    Also,
I know you didn't ask about this, but make sure you keep her out of the way from AC vent or fans, because our first hamster got a cold from air constantly being blown on him and died that way.

Leave them there sharpening their teeth?
  • emma - 2010-06-03
If your hamster does that you should just play with it for a little time and then your hamster will go in the cage and rest and don't worry your hamster only climbs the bars because it wants to play.....
  • *chandler* - 2010-07-08
My dwarf hamster did that too, but I looked up on the internet and it said they chew on the bars to keep their teeth from getting too long cuz if their teeth get too long they can't open there mouth which eventually they can't eat or drink so basically you don't do anything.

    Hello,
my name is Bianca and I will be getting a hamster soon, trust me, I have done a lot of research, but I have a feeling I know why your hamster is doing this,
you probably don't have enough chewing objects. If you have some then, it's probably that she feels lonely. Or maybe she just wants some attention.
    I hope I helped.

Emily, tell your parents that you really really want one if the say NO just say I'll save up for one p.s they're only £8. I have one but I said the same thing but they're both that fun, well they are but they sleep a lot during the day so you need to stay up late at least 1 o clock.

Hey I found that if you want to have cheep and disposable tunnels then you can use toilet paper. They work great! (And you don't need to clean them!)
