Nathan - 2015-06-14 We see them in the wild here in Texas. We live just off the west fork of the San Jacinto river.A drainage bayou drains into the river. We think the one we see lives in the huge culvert under the road, and makes an appearance when it rains very heavy. I say he is about 20' long. There is very large population of red eared turtles at this location as well.
swappy - 2014-10-09 I have a pig nosed turtle....she is not getting her back two legs open .....and back two legs seems to be paralysed........pllzz suggest be some tips ...

Clarice Brough - 2014-10-11 A deficiency of vitamins B12 can cause paralysis of the legs. The suggestions I've found to fix the problem say to give this vitamin to the turtle orally. Also provide a supplementary calcium and trace amounts of copper sulphate. Any pet store that carries reptiles will have vitamin supplements for herptiles.
Skurtle - 2014-07-17 I feed mine rep-cal adult iguana food, he/she is in great shape, 9 years old. Soon will have genetic testing done for sexing. Does anyone have any confirmed male or females?
Deanna - 2013-05-01 Hi I just want to know what pests are relating to the pig-nosed turtle in captive?

Clarice Brough - 2013-05-02 These guys usually do okay if they have a good environment and its kept clean, and they are properly fed. They are shy and so can get stressed, which makes them not come out to eat and then prone to disease. Bacterial diseases like shell rot, shell disease, sores, and white spots are common problems with most turtles. As far as 'pests' there are some parasites that are known to affect the Pig Noseed Turtles in the wild that include three species of flatworms. Two of these are Doodytrema carettochelydis and Paradeuterobaris novaguieae.
Its good to have some anti-fungal medication on hand, Pimafix is a good general one that has anibacterial and antifungal properties. If they get a parasite in captivity, you have to medicate them very carefully, and would want to take them to a vet for diagnosis. One medication called 'Flagyl' is said to be good to treat pig nose turtles for parasites and bacteria.
Henry Ching - 2013-02-04 Hi, my 5 year old pignose turtle recently developed brownish growths around the back of his neck and around the areas of the plastron. He is kept in a 90 gallon tank with parrot fish and tinfoil barbs in a community setting. Also present are 2 malayan box turtles. No aggression between them are seen. Any comments on what those growths are? And any recommended treatments? Thanks.

Clarice Brough - 2013-02-06 Not sure what's up with those growths, your best bet would be to take it to a veterinarian so you know what your are dealing with. In general, sometimes skin problems can show up as small bumps, though often more whitish. A couple of aids to help with that are to add salt to the enclosure, about 2 ounces of sea salt for every 20 gallons. Also making sure the substrate is soft helps to prevent skin problems, such as a play sand and a crushed coral mix. Aragonite can also be used. Good luck!
Christina - 2011-10-20 I love them! I am just dying to own one!
