Clarice Brough - 2013-12-10 Scorpions are look at only, no touch pets. I suggest you respect the animal and don't alter or abuse your pet. When handling is necessary, careful handling will avoid most injuries. Common symptoms of a scorpion sting are irritation, mild pain and temporary numbness. Still, if you don't want to risk being stung then don't handle it.
Often scorpions will lose their stingers naturally for one reason or another. The stinger will sometimes reform a little with a molt, but it's unlikely it'll ever go back to normal.
tristan cook - 2015-11-05 scorpions are watching pets not hands on pets. A scorpion's stinger is its main weapon for not only attack but defence as well. If its unable to subdue its food it can go hungry and die. Dont alter the specimen for your safety out of fear. respect it and using common since should keep you safe
Pat - 2013-05-25 I'm interested in making a cactus vivarium and I'd like a desert critter to add as a final touch. Is a Desert Hairy Scorpion a good candidate? I like that they're hardy and don't require much care, but I'm worried that they may be injured on the cactus or rearrange the cage as the Emperors are said to do. Can any one shed some light on these or other issues for me? Thanks.

Jeremy Roche - 2013-05-27 You should be just fine. They don't rearrange as much as the Emperors do.
tristan cook - 2015-11-05 I have a large female desert hairy scorpion with a small cactus in the tank. Ive actually watched her climb the cactus without any injury to her or the plant. Desert hairy scorpions are a burrowing species so there is a chance she could burrow around the cactus. i suggest putting a sheet of glass in the middle of the tank so you can always see them under the dirt. But no the cactus should be fine with a desert hairy scorpion.

Clarice Brough - 2015-04-09 When a female scorpion is ready to give live birth she will lift her body and become very stiff. Then she will lower her front, legs which allows the babies to emerge one at a time.
Angela - 2009-12-06 This site is great. I have a 6cm long death stalker spider. I have to go the hospital because of this critter more than once. It gives me one heck of a time but it is so cute!

Jerod - 2014-09-11 Wow, Angela is a dedicated one. Just remember what it is that you are attempting to handle and that its botanical protein venom has been adapted over tens of millions of years to serve the purpose of paralysing and or killing. Some believe they can become immune. This will not happen as drinking bleach will always make you ill or kill each time.dont play with death stalkers. afterall, if you hangout at the barber shop, sooner or later youre gonna get a haircut.
Adrian tattooer - 2013-07-02 I just caught a big one under my trailer I'm trying to find out if its a male or female as I caught a smaller one by a hot tub on the back porch. Can they be kept together or will they kill each other? The little one stung the big one and it curled up in the corner of the glass enclosure, I poked at it with a pen and it lifts up its tail but it seems intoxicated will it croak by another's sting? They are the same species of desert hairy scorpions.

Jasmine Brough Hinesley - 2013-07-03 I would not keep them together. These scorpions are loners and will most likely kill each other if given the chance. Good luck!
Jerod - 2014-09-11 Nope, the little one acted out of fear perhaps and nailed the larger one. Not what you expected when you acquainted the two is it? This will continue to happen until you separate the wo. They are immune to eachothers venom but thtle guy will usually hit first because she is quicker and her target is larger.
justin martin - 2011-02-27 Hi, I just bought a desert hairy scorpion, this is my first one. I was wondering Ibought it in small case it was in with the same original sand. I just wanted to make sure what I need to keep it healthy. What kind of light or a black light a gentleman told me, should I change the sand often, how much water is needed, if I need a bigger tank and with the food I see it eating two creeks, but the other one that was alive he stung and left it alone do I take it out and throw it out? Thank you for the help. justinT

tom - 2011-05-05 You should never use blacklight all the time. An ultraviolet miney checker type light is good to occasionaly look at your scorpion, but it is proven, that it is detrimental to their health. You will need a 2/5 gallon aquarium type vivarium (aquariums tend to be longer than tall, floor space is the key to housing) they are a ground dwelling species, that burrows from time to time, so mix reptile sand with a small block of coir (coco fiber) or potting clay, to give it a sturdy burrowing substrate, that won't collapse. You don't need to change the sand often, just remove uneaten/dead crickets, locusts and roaches. At the end of the year, do a complete overhaul. Move your scorpion into a small tub, that it can't climb out of. Rinse the substrate and other things and put it all back in. Also: feed him 2 crickets every week. Sometimes they go on hunger strike. Don't worry.
