I have had my zebra eel for around 15 yrs now, he's about 3 feet long or close to it. I have fed him by hand many times with no problems. I started with a used 75 gal tank my eel, 2 clown fish, 1 goby and 3 different types of live coral along with a lot of live rock. My eel was about 2 to 3 inches long when I bought him. It took a while but I managed to get him to eat raw shrimp. About 7 years ago when I was not home the side of my used tank split out, I lost about 1/3 of the tank water and of course the sump stopped working. The only things that suvived were the eel and the clown fish. As fast as I could I set up a 40 gal tank I had in the basment and transfered everything into it, and that's where he still lives today. For the past month my eel has not eaten and I'm not sure what is happening to him, he is still breathing and moving around inside his cave but he dose not come out and move around his tank like he use to.

I just bought a blue ribbon eel about a week ago that the store said was a trade in from another customer. It is eating very well with spot feeding krill I feed him 2 -3 pieces a night is this enough or too much? Please let me know he's a real pig wisemand1957@att.net

It's really a cool pet but I am a bit worried because he hasn't eaten yet. I tried to feed him but he ignores the food that I am giving, instead he tries to escape, pretty sneaky. He is already 20 inches long and one finger thick.

My ribbon eel is a pig. He will eat any kind of meat put infront of him, including over half of my fish in my reef tank. I had one a few months back that refused to eat, . . . and died. My suggestion to you would be, only have fish big enough that your eel can't eat. Even then my eel has grabbed onto a few big ones too. I just cant seem to feed him enough, crazy, I'm confused.

I purchased a fimbriated moray a month ago. Tankmates: four 6 inch columbian sharks, a 5 inch sailfin tang, two yellow mimic tangs, and a volitans lionfish. Within 24 hours, one of the sharks was gone, and that solved the problem of what i was going to feed it ($3.98 each)... The lionfish and the moray seem to have a polite respect for eachother. And the mimics and the sailfin try to harrass the moray, competing for hiding places. I ran out of decent sized sharks and started feeding the eel medium rosys, 3 or 4 at a time, what a time I had trying to keep the lionfish from eating itself to death while the eel fed. The sailfin succumbed to the moray a short while after, and the larger columbians were rescued and put in a brackish water tank. The mimics continue to press their luck, so far this moray has cost me $70 in fish, and is gonna cost me another $120, but at least it will be well fed!!

Our darn yellow-edged moray eel just ate the volitan lionfish that has been in the same tank with him for well over a year now! The eel is always well fed, so I don't know what his problem was today. It was a pretty large lion too! He left no evidence behind. We came home and the lion is nowhere to be found..... and Mr. Eel seems to not be hungry for his jumbo shrimp today.

I bought my zebra moray for $100 from the lfs. He was nearly 2' long then and had been in a 75g setup fowlr-- my lfs owner assured me he would be fine in my 55g reef setup--(i know b.s.) well by a miracle "Levi" is still with me after 2years- he scares the poop outta me about 1x every six months by refusing to eat for up to 2.5 weeks. He has decided he only likes tetra's jumbo krill, and refused to eat until i bought it- not even fresh frozen shrimp or scallops would entice him. As he ages i notice some lightning in his brown color and more wrinkles :). Its sad that the old owner got "tired of him" (yes, i went and hunted that guy down for info) he was at least 2yrs old then. He is a GREAT add to my reef tank (by the grace of God lol) and has only been suspected in one "disappearance" of my sally light foot crab (only her legs were left poor girl). He and my coral banded shrimp even seem to tolerate one another well, but the shrimp pushes him around believe it or not, and appears to pick things off him (perhaps parasites?). I have not had ANY ich or illnesses of any kind for more than a year (thank God).. so all seems to be well even though its only a 55g. I probably have 200# of live rock and a deep sand bed at minimum 4" that i DO NOT DISTURB. I use a baby bottle brush to remove detrus. I have a REMORA PRO protien skimmer, a phosphate reactor, and an ODYSSEA CFS 4 canister filter. To keep my monster in the tank i use the plastic grid from office lights (comes in sheets). My tank is now 4yrs old going on 5yrs. I have a yellow tang, a royal gramma basslet, a mandarin goby, tomato clown, yellow tail blue damsel, 2 pajama cardinals, a six line wrasse, and a lawn mower blenny, I am not a master aquarist, or even an intermediate one, I get lucky!!! and believe there is no real substitute for an aged aquarium you have to be vigilant until the ecosystem is set :(-- dont give up !! it really will get lots better, and its SO WORTH IT-- :)

We have had our black ribbon eel for about a year and a half now. He is in a 55 gallon hexagon aquarium with a maroon clown and a blue damsel. I have a hard time believing the stories about ribbon eels not eating. Ours eats EVERYTHING. As far as live foods go, we feed him goldfist and rubys. He also loves the minnows we get from ponds and rivers around our house. We also found he really enjoys cut strips of catfish and bass meat. We've never fed him silversides or any other frozen food. When we first got him my husband would feed him by hand, but now he has no problem catching it himself or stealing it from our clownfish and anemone. It's really a sight! He is now (very slowly) starting to change color and has grown more than a foot in the last year. We're really enjoying him!

I have a zebra moray and find him to be extremely easy to feed, in fact hand feed.
He loves to eat prawns and will come completely out off his hiddy hole to get them.

I was walking amongst some rock-pools two days ago and spotted a 2 and a half foot long leopard eel (not a yellow head) and started snorkeling with it. It stayed stock still with its mouth agape and then darted off. I love eels; they're my passion!
