I have a one year old long hair Chihuahua. His name is bruiser. Him and my 14 year old cat are buddies. The cat does not like other animals but she likes him. He has a lot of energy. He likes kids and other dogs and people. He thinks that everyone needs to pet him when we go for a walk. He does bark if he hears a noises. Sleeps under the blanket cuddled up next to my leg.

Our long-hair chihuahua is almost two years old and such a sweetheart. She gets along great with our relatives' small dogs and at home with our 13 year old cat. Its so cute to watch the cat and dog play tag around the house (although the chihuahua knows the cat is the alpha pet). She still has potty-training accidents during bad weather, but otherwise is very behaved. Unlike most of her breed, she rarely barks and rather lick people then bite/growl. Chihuahua's have a very bad rap for being yappy and ill-tempered dogs but not all of them act that way.

i have a 1 year old long haired chi and she is the sweetest dog. She also never ever barks and loves to lick people. I thought my Peanut ( that's her name cause she is only 3 lbs) only did that. As far as potty training goes, she is too little to go outside in the snow so I have placed a small pan with a piddle pad in it in the corner of my bathroom and she goes in there. She also goes outside when its nice out, but I found this to work great for chi's that are so small.

I have 2 long hair chihuahuas and they are so wonderful. I was given the first one from my daughter and he was so shy and scared of everyone and everything. He was 2 now he is about 7 and so happy, he is awesome to watch run he looks so proud. He does still have a bit of an attitude, always afraid of others around his food but just growls and complains. My little girl is almost 3 and so different I had her from about 2 months. She is happy and very friendly but barks because the male does when someone comes around. But she always wants to greet people and get some attention. I love this breed they are so cute and stuck to me like glue.

I have a 5 year old chuchua her name is Lucy and she doesn't bark and is so sweet and lovable. She is short hair breed but doesn't shed much and she is great with most people. Only time she bites is if she thinks one of us is being hurt.

We just lost our 14 1/2 yr old longhaired sweetie pie 3 weeks ago. She was potty trained within a week, was not a barker and loved to cuddle. She was a huge part of our life and we miss her soo much! She stole the heart of everyone she came into contact with, young and old. We live in Pennsylvania and are looking for a sweet little long hair female in Pa, ohio, New York area. Can anyone help.

Just found a dog at an animal shelter here in Long Island NY. We are having a family meeting on him. He looks like your sweetie pie. He looks like 2-3 years old. His hair is full and grown in. If we don't take her he would be a perfect match for your family. He has such expressive eyes too. We had a cocker poo who passed last September. My daughter has been in mourning and this dog bonded with her immediately. We just have to talk with dad to make our final decision.

I just adopted a long-haired chihuahua that someone dumped in the woods in 20 degree weather. Who could be so cruel? She's a pup and precious. I named her Cuervo to compliment my other chihuahua, fifteen year old Jose! She also gets along fine with my 8 year old lab (Taylormade) and my ? year old adopted cat (Swiper). She's precious and shows me her 'thank you's' in puppy kisses!

Skin problems in Chihuahua’s can be related to toxins released through the skin at excessive levels, or from a serious medical condition called seborrhea. But problems can also come from dietary allergies, fleas, bacterial infections, and other product specific allergies. Start by getting a check up by a vet to either identify the problem or help reduce the possiblities.

Their diet is crucial for maintaining healthy hair and skin. Skin dryness is often related to diet. Foods that are rich in vitamins A, E and B3 can help. Also switching to a food that doesn't have the same grains as the current food, or the same proteins, and that also has omega 3 fatty acids may help. It's not suggested that this breed is bathed often, but a topical treatment may help. Products (sprays, shampoos, and conditionsers) with colloidal oatmeal can soothe the skin and help relieve itching.

Tell her 'no' in a stern but not loud voice and then pet her and give her a rawhide chew, the kind with flavor on it...it's nervous or she may have fleas.

You did not say if the dog had this problem prior to your keeping it. If this started after the dog lost access to her Master, that might be the key. If so, you might be able to locate a piece of her owners clothing that has not been washed. This would give the Chi the smell of her owner. You could also try to let the owner keep an article of some kind in bed with them for a couple of days then give it to the Chi. I would suggest the dirty clothing first though as this would be more the smell that the dog remembers. Also cuddle the dog with whatever has the owners smell on it and just keep giving the Chi lots of love and attention. The other suggestions were good too, especially saying no during the bad behavior and then creating a distraction.

I agree with the lady about skin problems, there may be scents and perfumes in that home, different than her owners, go to the owners home and take a look and smell around, you will be surprised what you may find, also do you spray for bugs, the owner will not do this because of their pet. Good luck and thank you for caring for this little one while her owner is ill. Shelia

I rescued ROXI a Longcoated Chihuahua/long coated Daschund...she is my shadow and she sticks to me like Velcro. Very loyal...smart...spoiled...and she ain't going nowhere. My question is with this mixture do I need to be concerned with other health issues? She weighs 16 lbs---9 inches tall. One blue eye...just curious.

We adopted a long hair Chi almost a year ago, he was so dirty and matted we shaved him down, it is winter and he still has not filled in. Louie is about 1 1/2 years old and his bark is sometimes a scream. Plus he has green eyes and a very light tan nose? Louie has a bonded sister who we also adopted and she is a pom. They love each other and share a Kennel while we are at work. I have also found that he must eat barley and fish dog food or he will pull his hair off his knees. I guess all I am needing to know is if Louie is normal? We had a pit for 14 years and was an easy to take care of dog.

It sounds like your little dog is doing fine. He's eating and I'm assuming his weight is holding. Although the normal size for a Chihuahua is 4 - 6 lbs., some will weigh as little as 2 lbs. when full grown. These little dogs don't each much, and it is often recommended to offer them a small protion of food several times a day. Make sure you offer a quality dog food, the main portion, 40% should be proteins, with the rest rice (barley is fine) and some vegetables. Most suggest chichen, but fish, beef, and lamb are fine too, so if the fish is keeping him from pulling the hair off his knees, great. It may be that he is prone to dry skin, and the oil in the fish is giving him some necessary supplementation. Wishing you all the best with this little fellow, and his buddy pom.

Hi, My name is Casablanca Olsen, and I'm 11, I'm getting a Longhair female cream & white chi named Skylana on March 10, and any advice would be much appreciated, as we don't have any ideas about toilet training. (although we have been thinking about litter training)

A lot of people have had success with crate training. This is a place where they dog goes to sleep and for rest periods, and they won't foul it. Still, you will have to potty train... teach it where to go to the bathroom, whether litter or outdoors.

We just bought an 8 year-old long hair chihuahua. He is wonderful! The only issue we are having with him is that if he is in the room with me, he barks and growls at anyone else who walks into the room. If I am not in the same room, he loves on anyone. How can we break him of this habit?

Barking is one of the most common problems reported by Chihuahua owners/ The are very defensive of their territory. The first thing you do, no matter what its age, is spend the time and energy to teach them basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, and come. Teach them one command at a time. Obedience is accomplished by speaking a command firmly to them and rewarding them by offering a treat when they obey. Once they achieve a basic obedience level, then you're will be able to work on changing the barking behavior. When they bark you can follow through with obedience training, teaching them to be 'quiet' on command. A good suggestions I've read  is to also remove distractions that seem to cause them alarm, resulting in barking!

I've had my adorable long haired chihuahua for about 3 weeks and we have really bonded. She is an awesome little traveler in the car and a perfect companion. She is 3 years old and very well trained and obedient. My only concern is that she doesn't like any hard dog food I've given her. The vet gave me some healthy samples, but she turns her nose up unless I coat it with cottage cheese. I don't think this will be good for her long term. She wants people food but I'm avoiding that habit. The vet thinks she might have some skin allergies, which restricts her diet even more. Any suggestions??

Sounds like you have a great little companion. As far as allergies... here's some thoughts. 1 in 5 dogs suffer from some type of allery, but it's hard treat until you know what the allergy is. There are two different categories of allergies, internal and external. One of the most common types of internal allergy triggers are food. It can be alleviated by avoiding foods with a high gluten content, corn and 'filler' products. When choosing a dog food, the most important ingredient is should contain for your Chihuahua is meat. It can be chicken, beef, fish or lamb, but they need roughly a 40% meat content. Some of the most common Exernal allergies are reactions to Shampoos, conditioners and soaps as well as Flea bites.
