Kelly - 2013-10-21 My daughter has a long haired we call her Grandpuppy (as we have no grandchildren yet) and she is adorable. We take her often for overnights. She is also not a barker and her personality and temperament is fabulous. At our house she goes potty outside only. We have a puppy pad down at all times but she has never used it. She absolutely LOVES people. She is constantly on my husband or myself. As for bed, she sleeps with us. During the night if she becomes chilled she will paw me and all I do is lift the blankets and down she goes, snuggled up to me. I have no idea how she can breathe under there for hours but she does. If she needs to pee during the night (which is rare) she will lick my face consistently. She is such a joy to have around and so calming and funny at her crazy times that we are now searching for one of our own. With the allergies my husband has with animals, she is not an issue at all for him.

Like you Lucy is constantly on me or my husband. She also sleeps in our bed but we’ve taught her when light goes out she has to go down to her end of the bed with her own blanket. Only once I had to take her out in the middle of the night, she came and pestered me … but that was once in the months we’ve had her. I take her for 30 to 45 min. walks, when we get back to our yard she runs around likes she’s put with so much energy. She’s pure joy and we are so happy we adopted her.

I have two questions......i wanted to know if it's normal for this kind of bread to have watery eyes and since it's fur is light coloured it has always dark circles under his eyes . My biggest issue is that he is afraid of my husband and no matter what we do to make him feel secure he doesn't trust him and is afraid of him no matter what, he even pees on my husband's side of sofa and I'm sure he does it on purpose. I can assure that my husband is a dog lover and he never hit him or anything.....I will appreciate any comment. Thanks

Clarice Brough - 2014-09-01 Yes, this breed is also known to have very watery eyes, and it can cause tearstains. Also this is not necessarily a Chihuahua only problem, it is more common in any of the 'big eyes' breeds of dogs.
As far as the fear of your husband, that may or may not be changed, one of those things that is not a for sure. But you could try a professional 'positive-based' trainer. The behavior trainer may be able to help you determine if the dogs behavior could be manageable and possibly help over come, but it will take a lot of work and commitment and take a lot of time.
Tracy - 2014-08-23 Hi, 13 years ago I was in a pet store buying my Ferret food, when I saw a puppy pile if Chihuahuas for sale. Only one had a furry tail and a fluffy mane around his sweet neck. I asked the sales lady what kind of dog he was and she said"he's a long Haired Chihuahua". I didn't even know they made them!! So I went home, kept thinking of him and a few days later I went and bought him. Chewy is a tan and white Apple Head and rides on my Harley, had traveled across the country twice, is a visitor to nursing homes and never barks or snaps at anyone. He has his own fan club and I'm now a Chihuahua Fan!!! I want a whole Rescue Ranch of them!!!
Laurie Vinup - 2014-08-10 I have 5 long hairs they are all rescues they are my babies everywhere I go they are all right behind me they are so loving but if they think I am being threatened they are ready to protect me when I get a blanket and lay on the couch they each have their own spot next to me I just love my little dogs no matter how bad my day has been the minute I come through the door and see their adorable little faces it instantly becomes better I also have a 65 pound pit bull named Bella and they are best friend she will lay in the floor and they will jump on her pull on her ears it's so funny to watch she it's so gentle with them and when we go outside for walks she always is looking back to be sure they are all begins her and she won't go inside until they are all inside they are the light in my life

We tried a little allpesauce, put some in his treat, and we resorted to actually.... I held him while my wife put some in some yogurt and forced it down/made him swollow it. I felt bad doing it but you would think they could make this stuff so a dog could take it. Any thoughts for next time?

Clarice Brough - 2012-11-21 Heh... sounds like you guys had some fun:_ I've used hot dogs to bury the medication in for dogs, and that usually works because they will just gulp it down (no chewing for them!). Also, a technique I use when medicating dogs and cats... I open their mouth by gently inserting my finger on the far side of the mouth, just past the molars. Then I put the pill as far back in their throat as I can, where all they can really do is swallow. It's fast, effective, and over before they even know it happened! Then I give them lots of love and praise.

Toni - 2012-12-03 A miracle has happened! We can get heartworm medication injected for a six month period of time and it is no more expensive than six months of Trifexis. I just got my dog, Bonnie, an injection and am so glad I no longer have to wrestle with her to get that stupid pill, which she hated, down her little throat.
Joon - 2012-12-07 I usually break the Trifexis in half since the pill is kind of big for them to swallow, then coat it with cream cheese monthly for both of my dogs, long hair chi & miniature poodle. It works like a charm every time.

That's when my wife put it in some yogurt and (kinda) put it in his mouth. Got some on his coat by his ear and she washed him but didn't get it all. I took a pair of scissors and had to cut the piece off. Getting onto a different topic it seems our dog has a smooth coat but when it comes to the ear area it 'looks' kinda matted(it's not just looks that way). Seems the area 'feels' kinda damp and wondered if it had to do with his ear.

Anonymous - 2013-01-27 Try fat free American cheese. I have an 11 year old longhaired chi with an emlarged heart. He has to take several pills a day. We first tried just putting them down his throat - didn't work. Then we tried the pill pocket routine - worked for a few times and that was the end of that. He loves American cheese. We now wrap his pills (sometimes I have to cut them up if they are kind of big) in pieces of cheese. No problem, right down the gullett - I guess he thinks they are treats. You might try that avenue.

Deb - 2014-08-06 Yes, stop using trifexis. My dogs were on it. I have two long-hairs and they got ticks and fleas. It does not work as well as Frontline and Heartguard. My dogs LOVE the Heartguard and have NO problems with the Frontline. I tend to stay with what works. The concept is good for the Trifexis but they need to perfect it before they sell this stuff!!

My chihuahua is very sociable and actually cries when other dogs leave after playing and he cries when a human leaves expecially when I leave or my sister or someone from our household. I'll admit he snaps at us sometimes but he doesn't go mad. Like for eg if someone brings a nailclipper close to him he'd snap. I don't know why he snaps he was always comfortable with it. He's the cutest and the funniest dog in the world I love him to bits. I just have a question how do I get him past his fear? Why is he so clingy? I like it a lot but when I go out to friends and stuff he hold me back.

Clarice Brough - 2014-07-22 It sounds like he may not have had good socialization training when he was young. Being very attached to you is a typical resultanting behavior. Some suggestions are to set up a daily routine by providing regular times that are dedicated to him (that he can begin to count on), and other times that are not for him (again that he can count on). Also try crate training as it can provide a special protected space of his own. Once he becomes comfortable with having and being in his own space, then you may be able to go out easier.

A little blur of red fur was all I saw at first until I looked down between my feet and the most soulful eyes were looking back at me. I called him Squeaky as he makes the smallest squeak you have ever heard. 3 years later he is happy and healthy. My other rescue is a 14 yr old pug Buddhabear that Squeaky is terminally protective of. Squeaky loves all animals and people. The most social loving kid with paws you will ever meet.
