asad - 2013-01-20 I have female white dove and her age is approx two years and she is already laying unfertile eggs. Now I got a male white dove and his age is approx 5 months. The female dove beat him and the male is very disturbed. Now my question is that please tell me can they be a pair or should I get another aged male? Thanks.

Clarice Brough - 2013-01-20 It's cool that your female is laying, but your male is too young. They shouldn't even be put in a breeding situation until they are at least 6 months of age. I'd say it's a 'wait and see' if you want these two birds to breed, otherwise you may want to find a suitably aged partner.
Liz - 2012-12-10 I have a white female dove, she has been staying at the bottom of her cage for the last two weeks. I thought she may have been trying to lay an egg. She sometimes would do this when she was ready. She's eating and drinking as normal. She does not seem to be hurting or anything. Would any one have any ideas why? She is about 8 yrs old.

Charlie Roche - 2012-12-10 Usually if they are on the bottom, they are ill so you might want to take her to the vet. Second thought is if she is on a smooth doll rod - their feet will cramp and they can't hold it. I'd get a perch for her that is not smooth and you can take one from a fruit tree (safe). You can use a branch from a poine tree or even oak. Just wash it off throughly. Doll rods - they always put them in cages but does serious hurt to parrots trying to hang on. Next though is you say she laid an egg while on the bottom - again vet as maybe egg bound - could that be happening. You could tell by the behavior -

I tried a few different size of bowls , a water sprayer that you would use for your hair and she just doesn't like it . She will get out of it or walk away and what temperature should the water be , cold , lukewarm?

Charlie Roche - 2012-11-28 Room temperature to luke warm. Some birds do not like bathing - they just don't. You can just spritz them down a few times a week by spritzing water over their head. I have one that will only bathe and in her water bowl every time she hears the vacumn running. I have one that pitches a fit so bad - I had one that would turn the faucets in the kitchen sink on and bathe herself. They are so different but many just do not like it. A quick few spritzes over the top of head works and they usually get used to it.

Clarice Brough - 2012-10-14 Pigeons and doves can molt once a year though doves most often molt every other year. They usually do it towards the end of the summer. When the molt starts, it usually just replaces a few feathers at a time, not all at once. It starts with the wing feathers, the body molts throughout the period, and the tail feathers molt last. Sometimes there can be a radical molt, where a bunch of body feathers drop leaving a bald spot for a short period of time. The molt can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Hot weather may also cause them to molt, or remove some pin feathers.

I normallyhear that the doves would go out during the day and roam around and come back to roost at night - you hva ethe opposite occuring. They have obviously found what they believe to be a safer or better or high roosting place for night that they feel safe with. They come home to feed during the day. I do not know if come winter they will come back to roost or essentially you are feeding an acclimated but essentially free flock. They might all be trying to build nests - possibly someone on this site has more knowledge that can help. However, doves do and can fly free and flock.

Charlie Roche - 2012-08-31 Possibly the dove tossed the egg out but more likely is the mom dove thought she had to 'poop' or stepped outside the box and the egg got laid and splattered. Not everything goes perfectly. Possibly the nest box is too small or possibly you are giving them too much material to put into the nest - either way it is an easy solution.
