We had a dove (possibly a homing pidgeon as it was larger) hanging around our house so we started feeding him and made him a bed out the back, he came inside whenever we were home and always wanted to be close to us. (he became part of the family) He was with us for around 8 months but I was so upset to find when I got home from work last night he had flown away and hasn't returned yet:( I'm worried about him and hate the thought that anything might happen to him. Just wondered if anyone might know if he might return and how long it might take him? Or even any suggestions as to why he might have left in the first place, as he seemed so happy where he was? Any comments appreciated, I've never had any birds as pets before but I really miss Pidgy :'(

I have just been given a white dove and he is the most affectionate, soppy little thing I've ever had, better than all the other birds I've owned! He fell asleep on my shoulder earlier, all snuggled in against my neck! I would recommend doves as pets to anyone!

I have a gorgeous white dove named Darryl we thought she was male until she started laying.
Apparently all female birds including chickens lay but need males to fertilize the eggs, so no they don't have chicks in them unless there is a male.

Well, it means she's ready for a mate, if you don't have one for her yet:-)

I think doves make wonderful pets. I was in a fast food parking lot and saw a blue jay attacking a young dove. I shooed the blue jay away and picked up the dove, got an empty box from some delivery men and carried it home. His (or her, not really sure) neck was bloody where he was attacked, so I cleaned it and applied some antibiotic ointment and fed him. I intended to keep him only long enough to get him well and would release him in the house daily to allow him to exercise. When I tried to release him a couple of weeks later, he wouldn't leave, just sat on a branch at my eye level looking at me. I kept him for a number of years before he passed, he was incredibly tame and would perch on a head, arm, shoulder, even ride on a remote control truck. He was very gentle and had a beautifully soothing coo.

Just as well that he would not leave. Releasing doves into the wild, results in death almost every time. They are prey animals to every predator out there, as the blue jay demonstrated clearly.

My white dove crash landed into banana trees in my back yard in the Dominican Republic. It was completely exhausted. I put it in a box and gave it mixed chicken feed and water. It ate and drank a lot. I then built a big cage that I mounted behind the house in a flower garden. My dove almost seems to be smiling when ever I talk to it.
How can you tell the sex? I would like to find a mate for it.

Wow, it's really a great website indeed. I have also got white doves and they have recently laid eggs and I am very anxious to see the young ones. I got a lot of information from this site about how to take care of these fellows. Thanks a lot to those who have made this site.

We have noticed a beautiful single white dove in a nearby tree. It has been there for 3 days so far. It tilts its head when we coo, but makes no sound. It doesn't appear to be injured in any way. From what we've read, these birds are domestic and we worry that it can't survive in the wild. Can this bird survive in the wild? Can anyone tell us what we can do to care for and feed it? Is there any way to entice it to come down out of the tree? We would like to adopt it and care for it.

We have a similar bird next door. It has been sitting on our neighbor's window sill for quite some time. Can we help it in any way?

Hi it's Natalie again! 2 summers ago my Dad, my sister, and I were at Custurd time the ice cream shop. I looked in the window of the building next door and saw 2 doves! We walked in and the lady there told us that someone just took home the 2 dove's baby. Well, the next mourning the lady called us. We came to pick up the dove! It turned out the previous owner was annoyed by Flour's cooing and laughing! Now Fluffy will have a friend! I decided to name him Flour! Flour is so sweet but sometimes he gets sassy. I love him and fluffy so much! I'll be bringing them to school for my Java dove report on Thursday!
