michelle - 2012-02-05 Hi can anybody help me. I have two white doves that have just mated. The eggs have hatched they are nearly 3 weeks old. We let them out yesterday and one of them has not returned. I am realy worried and very upset. It knows our whistle and we have walked looking and whistling for her and had no luck. Can anyone give me some help or advise. It is the female that has gone will the male take over and look after the chicks.

Charlie Roche - 2012-02-05 Both the male and female dove usually feed the hatclings so maybe you will be fortunate in that respect. I'd get some feeding formula and a feeding syringe at the pet store just in case though. The female - she may have gotten lost and maybe4 she doesn't hear your whistle. One thing that possibly might help is to leave a strong light (flashlight, lantern, house lights - whatever) and a radio on close to the cage so the female can hear it and see it very visually in the evening. They don't usually move at all at night so start the light and the radio around 4 pm and leave on. If she hears something familar or sees a light it might draw her attention. It has worked - so there is hope. I am sorry.

Charlie Roche - 2011-11-21 Not a silly question. My human had a cockatoo and the cockatoo would just click for an hour at a time. Just click. She called everyone and asked why the c;licking and no one could answer. My guess is they just happen to like making a particular sound and they repeat it over and over.

abe - 2012-01-30 He is most likely a she. My male only coos and my younger female laughs when landing or when she is picking at the male! Also the male can only walk real slow, but hops real fast when he is after the female. She walks real fast. I don't know if all males and females have this same feature.

I've wrtten before and all the hints to catch haven't worked. she's a fast one. If I'm successful how big a cage do I need, food what kind and where do I find grit, and will she adapt to indoor life?

Charlie Roche - 2011-11-03 If she is that flighty than I don't know of any other way to catch her except a net. You just catch her like you would a butterfly with the net and then twist the net closed and carry her into the home. The cage should be at least 2 X 2 by 3. You can find grit/food etc at the pet store and I just can't imagine that she would not adapt to indoor life. I think she must have been indoors or had human contact at some point. It might take a little while but she wouldn't keep coming back like this if she felt safe somewhere else.
Marthe Schwartz - 2011-11-03 Hi Mary,I had written before, but did not see it posted. A white sacred dove was sitting in my driveway end of August. I lured her in with placing seeds and a water dish into the garage. Once inside I closed the garage and cornered her with a white sheet which I gently throw over her. Well, she is with us and my parrots since then and part of our family. I named her 'Perlita'. So gentle and sweet and she knows the whole house now and flies around to certain times when I let her out of her cage(cockatiel cage) or the guest bathroom, she occupies both. :-) Any Petstore should have grit, buy the medium size. mary - 2011-11-04 I hadn't thought of a sheet. I have some decorative fishnet that is flexable that maybe I could throw over her, as i don't have a garage to lure her into. I swear she eats with one eye on her food and one eye on me and at the smallest move I make, she's up on the roof.
Frank - 2011-11-06 One of my white doves got out of the pen and she had 2 little ones in the nest. The male mate continued to feed them. Mother dove did not stray because she had the babies. If she didn't have babies she would have been long gone. I have a small Hav-A-Heart trap suitable for catching small fry such as birds, chipmunks and so forth. I placed it on the ground by the pen and after a couple of days she became hungry and flew back to the pen, looked around and saw the seeds and half piece of crumbled white bread and and I placed it in a line Hansel and Gretel style and she followed the food inside and triggered the trap. I put her back in the pen and she flew straight to the nest and her little ones. Frank

mary - 2011-11-07 I sure hope doves have short term memory, cause today I really made her mad trying to catch her with no luck, first with a blanket no luck she moved just as i dropped it, then with a fishing net which my neighbor had previously tried weeks ago and she took off and I haven't seen her since. I'm so upset, that she put her trust in me and then I upset her by trying to catch her. I just hope she comes back to eat, All of you sucessful dove catchers must be a lot faster than I am.

Charlie Roche - 2011-11-08 I am sorry - she must be fast. The only other thing I can think of is to take some sort of cage and put the food inside the cage. Tie a string to the door and when she goes into eat - which might take a couple of tries then pull the string and close the door.

Charlie Roche - 2011-12-20 I'm not sure I understand exactly but I believe you're asking why your dove isn't sitting her eggs. Many times they do not sit (incubate) the eggs until the last egg is laid. During this time and incubation, it would be unlikely that she would come to be pet as well. Wait until the last egg is laid and see if she starts sitting the eggs then.

Charlie Roche - 2012-01-13 I would not. Ringnecks can be quite agressive and territorial especially during breeding season. Doves are extremely gentle and I think someone just might get hurt.
joe swider - 2011-12-17 About two weeks ago a white dove landed on my balcony and I seen that it had only one foot.I tried to get close and it flew to a nearby tree for a few minutes and then flew into the house through an open door and landed on a counter. After a day I was able to place the dove in a large Macaw cage that I had and it has been there since. It seems very adjusted and coos and cleans itself and eats well. I wonder if this was a lost dove and how did it lose it's foot. After some time would it be advisable to release the dove and expect it to return?

Charlie Roche - 2011-12-17 I think you have a tame dove there and just releasing the dove - probably wouldn't make it on its own. There are people who want doves, there are resue agencies and should you decide that you don't wish to keep the fella, then maybe you can find a home for him. It wouldn't be that comfortable if it weren't tame. As to the foot - many things could have happened. Foot could have gotten caught on a cage door (while he made his escape) or a fight with another bird. He is not aware that he is supposed to have two feet so he is fine.
Nancy Lynne Rankin - 2011-01-15 I have 2 mated pairs of white ring neck doves in separate cages. I inherited one pair and before I clearly understood about breeding and so forth, I had a second pair. All is well except I have an issue with these little black bug/beetles and I don't know what to do. I've tried a purchased repellent that is attached to the outside of the cages but it doesn't work. I've tried spraying them individually with a spray I bought and the birds like to bathe and do so but nothing seems to work. Any ideas, any help would be appreciated? Thank you.

Peter A Meyer - 2011-12-16 Nancy, Just new to this site and noticed nobody replied to you. If you still check your posting you should be able to buy a specific louse and mite spray for birds. My white dove that I caught near Melbourne, Australia, last Sunday lost all his/her lice with one application, but then we did give it a good soak By fluffing out its feathers and spraying right onto the skin over most of the bird. Charlie Roche - 2011-12-01 There is no accurate way to tell unless you get the dove DNA sexed. If ever it lays an egg - it is a gal. There are ads in the back of Bird Talk and you can send for a DNA sexing kit. It would require you to clip a toenail - just a little to short - to take some blood and send it into a lab. Sometimes a feather works depending on the lab. You can also take it to the vet.
LEAH WOODS - 2010-03-09 I take care of a lady with disabilities. She has a white dove that was given to her a few months ago. Two days ago it laid two eggs. The dove is in a cage alone. The previous owner had two doves and gave the other 1 to someone else. I need to know how to help her take care of the dove eggs. The mother is laying very close to them,do we need to add some sort of nest in her cage for the bird eggs? Please help dont know what to do? Thank you, according to what i read the eggs will hatch in two weeks.
