Lori Austill - 2005-10-13 Fifteen years ago I went into a pet store to get out of the rain and while I was wandering around close to the bird cages, a nanday conure stepped onto my shoulder. She has been my baby ever since. I didn't know if she was a boy or girl so after ten years I decided to have her sexed. The DNA test was sent off and a week before we got the results she laid a single egg...only one she has ever laid. Go figure. Once, on a trip to the vet, the bottom fell out of her cage and she escaped. I was hysterical but after 5 hours of looking I heard her "screech". I called her name (Nandie) and every time I did she screeched again leading me to her. Another time my cat somehow escaped from the bedroom where I always keep her when Nandie is out. She caught Nandie after a frantic chase. After a trip to the ER vet clinic and 10 days of intense antibiotics, she was no worse for wear. She says "hello", "want some water", "bye bye" and "you're my baby". I don't know how long Nandays live but I hope it's a LONG time.

When he was in the pet store he was ok, not agressive but he was with other conures on perches, loose all day in the store. When we took him home he changed into a biting mean bird. I have had him now about a month and have been trying to work with him, he will only come to me but now he is getting more and more agressive with me and I dont know if he wants to bite me. I am thinking about returning him to the store. I do love him, but am torn and dont know what to do.

When a parrot goes into a new environment, they don't know the place, the routine or the people, and are faced with a big adjustment. The first month is actually the best time to establish the relationship you'll have. First look at the environment of the bird. Often they will start to act out if they become bored, or get frustrated from things like too small a cage, lack of toys, or loneliness. Sometimes a keeper unintentionally encourages bad habits, so you need to look at your own behavior too, to make sure you're not actually rewarding the bird's bad behavior. Things like acknowledging the bad behavior by scolding or just letting the bird out of its cage may simply be taken as a reward by the bird. The bird must learn that biting is not the way to get what it wants. To train these birds, you must gain trust but also establish yourself as the 'flock leader.' Things like making sure the bird is alway at a submissive height, so no higher than your chest, both when out of the cage and its position in the cage, can help. There's are many things you can do, and you're on the right track because you care:)
Tiffany Neal - 2014-12-01 My aunt gave her nanday conure cause she took in my dead grandmas hyecen macaw who my grandma spoiled rotten where it doest allow u to talk to anyone but him or on the phone he squawks nonstop all day long where the nanday started plucking het feathers out on her belly and under her wings cause of him now I have her in my quite apartment and she gets alot of attention and love I have notice some downy like feathers like maybe 3 to 4 on her belly does that mean all her feathers will grow back cause we by we me and my aunt goes to a store call bird fever said it might not grow back in so I wanna know if there is even a slightest chance it will plz let me know

Clarice Brough - 2014-12-02 It could be that the feathers will grow back. Having a quiet home reduces stress, but these birds still need plenty to do so make sure you have toys and things for it to climb around on.
maria tapia - 2014-04-10 Hi, I've had my nanday bird for around a year. She has always been happy and playful. Not that long ago she started acting weird. She has been avoiding me. She has two cages, one for sleep and one for day time. She has been spending a lot of time in her 'bedroom'. She also bit me and she really has never bitten me before. Every time I try to spend time with her she just seems so sad. I don't know what's wrong with her. Can you please help me?

Some birds seem to completely change personalities when they are going through that. My other thought is that maybe she is lonely. Are you gone a lot of the day? It's possible she is just craving more attention.
This juvenile Nanday Conure or Black-hooded Parakeet is about 5 months old. He is a super sweet bird by anybody's standards!
