It was Christmas time and i had changed the tank water almost to the brim.i was in another room vaccuuming and when i returned to the loungeroom i saw a small orange bauble on the first thought was it was an ornament that had fallen off the Christmas tree.when i bent down to pick it up i realized it was my spritely little shubunkin that had jumped out of the tank.i brushed him off and quickly returned him to the water. He spent the next few hours at the bottom corner of the tank. I think he had totally freaked himself out.after a while he recovered and was no worse for his little adventure...

Hi,I have a 3 year old shubunkin who until recently has never been ill. She currently has ich, which I am treating with aquarium salt and treatment - that seems to be improving. Now she seems to have a curved tail and a swollen underneath. Can anyone please advise?

Hi I bought a Shubunkin & a Comet goldfish last week for my daughter, they both have settled in well but in the last few days the Shubunkin keeps hiding behind the bush we bought along with the tank & it will only come out when I move the bush away. The Commet goldfish is so active it never stops swimming. I'm getting a little concerned for the Shubunkin please can some one help? Don't know if anything is wrong with it or should I just remove the bush? Regards Mrs Biggar from Wigan

A couple of ideas... add 3 or more to cause distraction. Also, you can rearrange the tank when you add new fish, so that your Shubunkin has to get use to a 'new' home and so is not so bent on chasing new arrivals.

These are very social fish, and do like company. But your Shubunkin is going to be around 4' when it grows up, and with your tank size that's really all the goldfish types it will be able to handle. (Goldfish put a heavy bioload on the tank.) Still its quite small right now, so perhaps you could try a few other relatively peaceful fish like mollies or guppies. (I say 'relatively peaceful' because you never know when you're going to get a jerk that doesn't follow the general behaviors for their species!)

Hi, I've had my tank for almost 2 years, I have a comet, shubunkin, a pearlscale, 2 orandas a lionhead and white and red goldfish, they are all healthy, happy, playful, greedy fishes. Over the past couple of days I have noticed a yellow kind of mucus on the shubunkin, it's not on any other fish and doesn't seem to bother him at all, no flicking or rubbing it doesn't appear to fit the symtoms of anything I've re about, any one have any ideas what this could be, appreciate any help?

I have an outdoor pond and I put 3 Shubunkins in it. One morning, all but 1 were gone. Most of the plants were in the filter for some reason so I thought the fish were in there as well but could never find them. Does anyone know what might have happened? Also, I constantly have to get them out of the filter. How can I keep them from swimmiing into the filter? The net catches them so they don't get hurt but I would like to keep them out of there.

It is possible they died and are hidden on the bottom of the pond? Have you scooped around the bottom to check? Or, they could just be hiding really well in the plants?

Sounds like a raccoon may have paid a visit to your pond.

The main thing you should be concerned about when transferring them is water temperature. Try to make sure the temperature of the aquarium water is very close to the same as the pond water. Do you have other fish in your aquarium? If not, you may want to just put the pond water into the aquarium so that you can be sure your fish won't feel shocked in new water. To transfer them use a large net if you have one.

Thanks my Shubunkins have been in my 120 gallon aquarium for 5 days and they are doing great. One of them is doing really good but has trouble getting to the top for food. She was fine in the pond, could she be pregnant or trying to adapt to the aquarium?

Hello from England. I have had my beautiful London shubunkin - 'Dotty' for the last four years. He happily lives with a gorgeous Wakin, two other comet goldfish and an albino xenopus toad. Fantastic website, keep up the good work.
