BRIAN L. LUND - 2007-02-10 I have two full grown oscars, one red and one tiger. The tiger oscar got a eye fungus and lost 90% of her sight, not a problem tho the red oscar never leaves her side, I think she can see out of pin holes because when food floats by she gets it, my red oscar loves to jump out of the tank he has done it in the middle of the night, thank God I heard him hit the floor. If you really want to see the true spirit of your oscar put several large cray fish in the tank. My red oscar loves them, he stalks them and then when he gets them where he wants them "BAM" he slams them against the glass knocking them out, then sucks them in tail first. They also love golf fish and earch worms that I get from the bait store. My kids love them and my wife thinks they are ugly. Right now they are in a 55 gallon tank but soon to come is a 250G tank. It is going to cost me a small fortune bit its worth it. All and all they are great pets and easy to care for. Best fish Ive ever had!
Terry Sheneman - 2006-09-04 I have had two Red Oscars for about two months now. The really cool thing is that I have taught one of them to actually take a shrimp from my fingers! He will jump almost 5 inches straight up out of the tank to get it. These fish are VERY smart, but you need a BIG tank. Mine is 140 gallon, and though the two (there are about 10 other kinds of fish in there as well) are only about 3 inches long, they are the rulers of the tank. Pretty cool to watch. Who would've thought that fish were this smart!
Ashley Sweet - 2006-08-28 I have two oscars, names "white boy" 7 inch and "black boy"8 inch. I've had my albino for a year and made the mistake of leaving him by himself in a 10 gal w/ the pleco the whole time. I had to go buy one his size and switched to a twenty gal tall(It seemed so much bigger when I bought it. The new oscar actually has "white boy" beat by about an inch all around but you couldn't tell it by how they act. The first night they hung out the whole time "palling" around the tank and now it's like the albino is entirely jealous of the new guy and having to share food or feeding time. There's definately not a shortage of food they eat about 3-4 times a day and not lightly. He keeps scaring him behind the log in the tank. He's so spoiled but I love them both. They are so fun unlike my betta which plays dead until its feeding time :)
justin c. pinheiro - 2006-07-08 I have one oscar that i got 4 years ago. well there was originally 2 but then the other one caught a disease that i couldn't cure and eventually died after about a week. anyway when i first got the oscars they were only about an inch. now after only about four years the one thats left is now suprisingly 9 inches. i keep him alone in a 55 gallon tank. the only thing alive i keep in the tank with him are goldfish but they don't last long if you know what i mean. The oscar is a good fish to keep in a species tank but just make sure the tank is big enough or they will fight, eventually resulting in a serious injury or death. I would recommend this fish to anyone who can handle it.
Adam - 2006-05-27 I have 1 Tiger Oscar in a 30 gallon with my Green Texas Cichlid. They are both really great fish to have, the Oscar watches anything that goes on in the room. For example I threw a pen across the room and it saw it and tried to go after it. I will soon be moving the 2 guys to my 55 gallon when I move my 24 african cichlids and my Loaches and Catfish to a 150 gallon that I'm getting in a few months. I am 17 and soon going on to university to become a Icothytologist.
I own 2 oscars in a 20 gallon hexagon tank and man do i love them. i bought them at walmart one afternoon and i have been in love with them since. i am 17 so when i am doing my homework they just look at me and try and help me out. When it comes to feeding they are the very quick. Their names are bert (male) and earie (female). Bert is the white one and earie is the red one. they get along great! I havent bred them yet but on somedays it looks like they want to! lol~ Anyways if anyone is bored with looking at a goldfish get these fish. Go recycle 2 months of cans and bottles like i did and get these fish. They are great fish and this site helped me out with the preparation, so thanks for that!
CAZ - 2006-04-22 I HAD 4 OSCARS AND 2 DIED, THEN I HAD 2 TIGAR OSCARS LEFT. I WAS VERY SADDENED WHEN ONE OF MY TIGAR OSCARS STARTED TO TAKE SEIZURES IN MY TANK. THEY WERE CALLED FLOPSY AND MOPSY (FLOPSY PREVIOUSLY HAD A BROKEN JAW). IT DIED AFTER 7 YEARS OF PLAYING WITH PING PONG BALLS AND OTHER FLOATING TOYS (MAKE SURE THEY ARE STERILISED FIRST) AND FOLLOWING ME ROUND THE ROOM AND WATCHING THE TV. THEY WERE KEPT IN A LARGE TANK IN SITTING ROOM WITH A FOOT LONG PLEC CALLED TIDDLES AND THEY DIDNT EVEN BOTHER HIM. THEN THE OTHER ONE DIED. MY AUNT WHO BRED THESE SAID IT WAS DUE TO LOSING ITS COMPANION. SINCE IT WAS A BABY I HAD THEM. THIS WAS JUST A LITTLE NOTE SO I COULD REMEBER MY FLOPSY AND MOPSY AS NO ONE ELSE LIKED THEM. THEY SAID THEY WERE UGLY INCLUDING MY EX HUSBAND. THEY DIED WITHIN A WEEK OF EACH OTHER AND I LOVED THEM AND THEY ALSO CAME TO THE SURFACE FOR TICKLES AND STROKES.
Mike L - 2006-04-22 Hey im mike. i have 1 tiger oscar for about 4 months now. it has grown very fast from 2.5" to 6" in that time. i feed it mostly pellets and occassionally feeder guppies. it eats the pellets and the guppies like eating is going out of style. i breed my own now because of disease and the only place that sells them in my area is 20 miles away, why waste gas. in that time i owned a plecostumus about to less than 2" long. as my oscar grew it became a problem as he eventually started nipping at the plecos fin. it was ok the first time cause only a little bit was taken off. then the next day i found the pleco in oscars mouth around 11pm that day! the pleco was still alive somehow but eventually passed the next day. so to anyone who wants to have a plecostumus, make sure it is bigger or as big as your oscar. Oscars are great fish overall and a great conversation piece. my friend always mentions everytime he is over that that fish is getting bigger every time
Nick S. - 2006-03-15 i have 4 oscars; a red, an albino, and 2 common oscars. they can be quite the handful sometimes. i started them out in a community tank because when i got them they were only about 3 inches. but soon enough they killed every fish i had in that tank. my mom was pretty mad. they ate about $50 worth of fish, but i dont regret it at all. they are more fun than a dog
martin stevens - 2006-03-11 oscars are an exiting experience. they all have different personalities, and appeitites. i have 2 mature adults, and 1 teenage oscar.
A classic in every sense of the term, the Oscar Cichlid has long been heralded as one of the most spectactular and iconic of the aquarium fish!
