Hi, I have just acquired two Rice Fish , I think Medaka, and think I have a male and female. I am wondering what temperature of water is best to encourage breeding. Now that we are moving into July I am hoping this is a good season for breeding them. I am quite chuffed at the prospects of increasing my collection. The main reason I took to them is because they can withstand colder temperatures even in the winter here in the UK. I have a small, lily pond inside my garden greenhouse (lower walls of wood) where it is submerged into the ground about 20 inches. I may leave some fish outside over winter as the pond is quite deep and protected. I will likely place a clear cover during the coldest months here in the UK. My pond rarely gets a thin layer of ice in winter so I think they will be fine. The other reason I like these little fish is because I have tried goldfish in this pond but they came from a very large, fast swimming group tank and so jumped out when put in a smaller environment. Of course they are so much larger than Rice Fish. I love how calm Rice Fish are. Hope you all have fun with yours.

I have a pearlscale it looks massive been treating for dropsy still eating but getting bigger been treating now last 2 weeks still swimming looking happy but just fat

Can anyone help me? I have 2 bubble eye goldfish and they are at the bottom of the tank barely moving but still breathing, they at times float around the tank but they actually don’t swim the water flow just pushes them around. I’m really concerned and not sure on what to do.

I have over the lst 5 years had Koi with 1 fantail,. I have seen all the koi at some time feed but never the fantail, what and when does it feed?

Has anyone ever kept the Needle Nose with Tiger Barbs and Clown Loaches? I am wondering if they would try to eat the Tiger Barbs? My Barbs are rather on the large end so I was wondering if I could add a trio of Needle Nose with them? The tank is 75 US gallons.

Saved one of these from my Science teacher of all people. It had been in a miskept tank, and looked rather dull when I received it. Survived a walk home from school, and placed into my 20 gallon planted with Tiger Barbs. It recovered very well and saw its gray turn into gold within a few days, the barbs left him alone as he was 4 inches and they were 2. Lived out his last months in a nice planted tank, so I'm glad he found his way to my tank. Very forgiving and hardy fish indeed.

I've had my two bleeding heart tetras for about a year now. I chose the hearts because of how beautiful they are, they immediately caught my eye! When I got them, they were planned to be tank mates with my female betta. They all surprisingly got along, but recently my female betta passed. My bleeding heart tetras, panda and pocky, seemed kinda sad and wouldn't swim around after my betta died, so I went out and got 5 neon tetras. everything seemed fine the first day, but each day after, one would disappear. Only one neon tetra survived and it's in a different tank now. But after I rearranged Panda and Pocky's tank they are more active now! Their current tank mates are 6 ghost shrimp and one snail. They are very nice to the shrimp, thankfully. These guys are very beautiful and relaxing to watch. They're aggressive to smaller fish, but they haven't hurt any shrimp so far!!

I have a red cap Oranda and when i looked at her today, It looks like either something ate the red cap off her head or it rotted off. Has anyone dealt with anything like this - I gave by weekly water changes and take special care of my fish so I have no idea how on earth this could have happened. I Recently put in an anti-algae chemical but I’ve never seen her in such bad shape and I’m very worried. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

This red cap is called a wen. As beauriful as it is and gets more beautiful as the fis ages, I can have its own problem. In its tine folds and crevices where bacteria can thrive as well as fungus. To avoid this I would be careful to give the water in the tank top priority. You should be using a canister filter and water changes 1 at least once a week. Having spent years raising the beautiful Discus which requires very pristine water for survival needing several water changes weekly depending on the its condition.. \I would first quaratine tank and treat it with one of the many treatments on the market. I have an approx. 15 inch long leopard Plecasamus who has eaten every fish of different breeds, and sizes that I have put into the tank with him. I feed him algae tabs etc. Is this normal?

Our knife fish did it again... we now have 4 in the tank. We don’t have room for this many knife fish. Now I’m going to have to net one and sell it to the fish store that we purchased the original 2 from.
