I own a what I believe to be a male midas cichlid. I'm 95% sure he is a male. The territory displays, the attacking of everything that enters the water. The long trailing dorsal and analysis fins. Anyway mine is in a 90 gallon currently I just moved him from a 55. Now my confusion lies in were is his hump.his head is thick but it's no wider than his body. There's also no real shape from a side profile either. Is this because there's no female or am I doing something wrong? He eats fine very aggressive fairly active. Has a pond snail named turbo for a buddy. But why has this guaranteed hump not forming?

Well, hopefully it is a Midas Cichlid. Both male and female specimens can get a slight hump, but it is usually larger in males. The hump begins to form when they are mature, usually this is at about 6 inches (15 cm). I've alsoheard that the hump develops better and faster if they are very comfortable in their environment.

Maybe it's because you have a Red Devil instead?

Moved my midas to my other tank the other day..The 1st day he was just fine and now he's keeping his fins down, not as active and hiding a lot. The water temperature thermometer reads 74/76..Fed him bloodworms today just to get him moving (He likes them). Has a variety of food..What's wrong with him?

I do not feel that it's very accurate to say that Uaru's enjoy a planted tank as is stated on the profile as they're the 'hugest plant' lawn mowers I have ever seen of 'any species' fish. They even devour Java Fern. What fish eats Java Fern? They cannot live in a tank with plants unless you intend on growing the plants so that the fish can eat them. Softer water and PH yes, that's true, and they are definitely omnivores.

Update on the lungfish. The small tear through his muscle worked into a large tear. The muscle split and and organ was popping out. Tried to sedate with clove oil but because he's not Really a fish it took more than twice the recommended dose and he still had some kick when I attempted to superglue him shut. His slime coat shed the glue by morning. Sorry guys

I have four relatively small parrots living in a 200 liters tank, I brought a Red Devil that is bigger than them. would the Red Devil hurt the parrot if I put it in the same tank?

If your red devil is territorial and aggressive than yes it will harm your parrot fish. I have a red devil that is almost 6 years old and about 12 inches long. He has killed a blood parrot before as well as a tiger oscar that was actually bigger than him. I do not recommend having them in the same tank.

I have a Midas that is identical to the pictures. She is older as I purchased her as an adult. She has a hump on her head. She lays eggs. I am looking for a mate for her. She is with another Cichlid but nothing seems to be happening and she is fixing to lay again. I would love some fry in my tank. We love watching her. She is aggressive sometimes and very sweet other times. I just want her to have a mate. Krakinup@charter.net if you can help! Thanks.

I have 2 midas, each in a 30 gal tank. How do you tell the sex? Both of mine were bright orange but suddenly the smaller & older of the two began to lose color. Now the older & smaller one is slightly orange in the face, but is mostly white. The bright orange gets hyper sometime when it's feeding time, but the lighter colored one is calm. They only share each tank with a pleco.

@ Ian. Females can grow humps on their head as well. And if the fish laid eggs it's pretty obvious that it is a female.

I read a lot of comments about Midas cichlids killing other fish. Sure they are aggressive, but when you keep them in a 150 or 200 gallon tank things won't get out of control (most of the time). There will of course always be fights, but that's not a problem. I keep them in a 200 gallon with other big Central American cichlids like Vieja's, Jaguars and a pair of Amphilophus Amarillo (very closely related to the Midas) and I never had one fish kill another.

Try rearranging the decor. Sometimes this will help defer aggression for a while.

My jack is very peaceful and scared of my other fish and they are tiny compared to him

If he was last in that could be the reason. As he gets comfortable he may lash out.

Can I keep 2 or one jack dempsey in a 29 gallon?

Click For Replies (2)
  • Charlie Roche - 2012-05-08
A minimum of a 50 gallon tank is recommended just for one - so even 29 gallons is too small for the adult.
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-05-09
These fish get large. 29 gallon is fine when very young for 2 but they will out grow the tank so be prepared to upgrade as they grow.
