1. Water sprite (if you get the real deal) IS an aquatic plant, and given adequate light and nutrition, and a lack of fish that will eat it, will do fantastic - to the point you will be giving it away or throwing it out... (years ago when my family owned a tropical fish store we would give starts to anyone who wanted them, and it would be no time before they were hauling back buckets full...)

2. Yea, the pic looks almost more like "water wisteria" which i never had very good luck with, but who knows...

3. there are two varieties of water sprite there is a very 'thin' leafed version(makes me think of what they call asparagus fern), and one with thicker leaves (makes me think of elkhorn fern, which is what we used to have, and I wish i could find nowadays)...

There are several ways to reproduce the Java fern and so the time span varies although it seems to be very quick in any method. An article Reproduction Java Fern will give you some insight as to how, how long and what to do.

They do have a very beautiful flower... and yes they have a scent. Their scent has been described as a sweet woody or earthy smell, and one site describes it is as 'reminiscent of leather and fine tobacco'.

Anacharis is truly the easiest plants to have in any cold-tropical water aquariums! I only started out with a couple of bunches and now I have a full 20 gallon aquarium dedicated to anacharis! It will grow rougely. The best part is that it can withstand extremely cold temperatures meaning it can overwinter in outside ponds. The leaves will melt and it will regrow again once spring comes.

Can you tell me what your tank conditions are to have it grow so well? I need to culture this plant for teaching purposes and having a full tank dedicated to it is exactly what my goal is. So far I have not been that lucky.

This type of fern does very well in graval and it will consume almost all the fish food that is near it in the graval but you still need to give the fern at least 5 - 7 hours of aquarium or sunlight every day

Another question, does the java fern grow into the substrate from the rock/driftwood it is tied to?

Generally, they must be tied down. Depending on how soluble the driftwood is, there is a possibility that they will grow into it. Especially, if the wood is more rotten.

Everyone says to tie the fern down but all the pics show it in the substrate? And I assume there is a difference between java fern and java moss? Just to make sure I get it right the java fern gets tied down? Thx
