"We have a 29 gallon freshwater tank that has been set up a year. We started it and for almost the whole year we used well water. We have an undergravel filter with a power head and also a charcoal cartridge with an air stone on the other side. There are 2 live plants also. The problem is the ph started to rise and the water turned very acidic. When i talked to a fish store owner he tested the water and said that the nitrates were off the chart and that we had old tank syndrome. We did a water change of 60% and added city water. For a couple of days everything was fine then it started to turn again. I have tried everything i can think of and can't figure out why the water is so acidic. We still use city water on water changes and treat the water with a chlorine neutralizer. To compound the problem we have a bad case of blackbeard algae. I was told of a combination of fish to put in the tank that would eat this type of algae (siamese algae eater, flag fish, nerite snails) so we bought them. . . . . . . . . . . . They all died overnight. . . . . . . . . Needless to say that was a very expensive attempt to control this form of algae. ( my mom is ready to give up! ) i would really like to get her tank back together as she sits and watches them constantly since we set it up last year for her mother's day gift. . . . . . . . Please help if you can."
