"I have read through all the diseases and still cannot figure out what the disease is in my tank. I have hard water that is softened by a water softner, have a 55 gallon tank with sand, mostly real plants and just a few plastic (the plants are growing fine) tropical fish (plecos, catfish, glass fish, neons, koli loaches, zebras) have snails which is under control filter is aqua clear 70 on the dip test strips the nitrate 40 ppm is good, the below .5 ppm is good, it shows i have soft water, the alkalinity is high and the ph is high. After talking to the pet store they said the last two are just fine I tried to lower the ph and alkalinity with the meds to lower but it was killing my plants and was not making any difference on the dip tests. The only thing I could find to lower it was using distilled water to fix it but was told not to by the petstore. I can tell who the next fish to die is. This only happends one fish at a time. They act normally, but inbetween the nares I can see a peach colored mass (?) inside. Last night my last hatchet fish died. I predicted the day before this was gonna happen. I could see this peachy color in its nose and its eyes started turning red, they bugged out a little but this does not normally happen. After it dies its eyes do not cloud over. Within a few days to a week the next fish will die or show signs of the same thing. Any suggestions?"
