"I have a Dusky Conure named Charlie that has been with me since he was 4 weeks old; He's now going on 14 years. He's very active and has a dozen phrase vocabulary. A few weeks ago he fell off his perch while sleeping, so out of concern for leg breaking - I removed the metal grate that normal sits about 3/4 of inch above the cage floor. I added more newspaper and cedar as ' cushions ' just in case it happened again. Then the behavior started changing. Charlie became obsessed with shredding the newspapers and began hiding under the remains. I became concerned that he might be ill, as hanging out at the bottom of the cage; lethargic, less talkative and seemed to eat less - none of which is a good sign, BUT MUCH TO MY SURPRISE - Today, my 14 old Conure laid a egg. From what info I read, the introduction of the newspaper as nesting material may have triggered this cycle. I know not remove the eggs until about 3 weeks and the need for calcium supplements - but then we are going back to clean and newspaper-free cage."
