"I have had gouramies for around 4-5 years now and i still have one female from the start. They are very hardy to water conditions and i found my oldest gourami very peaceful! I have her now in a community tank with mollies, platly, swordtail, one large plec, 2 pairs of cichlids and 3 types of tetras. She has been alone for a long time as the male died a year ago so i bought a blue 3 spot gourami and hes a beauty. So after a while i bought 2 more qouramies of different species and all looking fine. I have managed to breed all my live breeders with my Gourami in the tank and never had a problem with them getting eaten as i have plenty of floatong plants for hiding and also succeeded in breeding my cichlids so im looking forward to my gourami as she is now pregnant. So i would recommend gourami for starters. I also notice a lot of buyers go for the small and sweet tank mates but really i always go for the mid age looking fish that have had a start in life which i find helps. so hope my experience will help others!! but really i think its whats the fish's personality more than anything and of course if they are kept in good condition. AND.....for you interested in having a aquarium of your own! dont give up when you fish get sick, ask your local aquarium shop for help as the good ones will do you a free water test there and then and tell you what you need to do! Problem i had was salt! Its expensive in aquarium shops for a little box of it but i just go down to my local food store and buy sea salt thats of course 100% with no rubbish added which was much cheaper! "
