My mouse, Skitz, is sick. I picked him up today and he was so cold I thought he was dead. He started moving though, but I noticed he was shaking a lot. I held him for a while and tried to cover him up with my hands and breathe hot air on him for a while. He started moving some more, so I put him back into his cage so he could eat. At first he didn't seem to want it and he was walking oddly. He was sort of wobbling and hopping, but the hopping is normal, that's how he got his name. Eventually he started eating and now I have the heater blowing in his direction. Does anyone know what might be wrong with him? I read the sickness' above and the only thing I can come up with is maybe a respiratory infection. I'm really worried about him.

I have two mice now: Clover and Sunny. Tumbleweed just recently went back to the earth so I have been feeling a little down. I noticed Clover's eye have been pinched shut and a little glossy. They are worse today than yesterday and I came to this site to see if there is anything that could help me help her. Thank you so much for the info.

Hey, mouse goers---i just bought 3 female mice- and one male im breeding them for the sole purpose of feeding their young to my incredible ball python snake sifer!!!! he/she is only 5 1/2 months old but eats like a champ!!! so i figure breeding mice would be the most cost effective--- i have no intentions of feeding the mice i have now to him/her cause ive given them names Mirah Mellisa Mary and Patrick:) quick question how big do the litters get and how long should i expose them to light per day?

I've been reading some of the posts where people had found stray mice. I too, found a white mouse with tan spots in my backyard. Actually, my cat found her first, then my dog saw it and they were both tormenting it. The little mouse wasn't running away, just looking at them looking confused. I intervened and took her in the house. Fortunately, I had a spare 10 gallon aquarium to put her in. I thought it was odd to find a mouse, but then I remembered that my neighbors have a Python, so maybe she escaped from it too! It's been about 3 months and she seems very happy except for an occasional "asthma" attack. (I don't know for sure if it's asthma, but she occasionally has trouble breathing for about a 1/2 hour and then she's fine; never symptomatic long enough to take her the vet). She's a finicky mouse, she refuses to eat commercial mouse/rat food. I have to give her different types of cereals, oatmeal, dried/fresh fruit, fresh greens, pumpkin seeds and sometimes a bit of her favorite - Cheese! (It's not a myth, mice do like cheese!) I never would have gone out and purchased a mouse for a pet, but she is very sweet and I'm so glad I found her!

I love mice except my mom hates them. They are the best pets in the world and they are the furriest little critters. I am planning to get 4 mice when I am older. I used to have a white mouse named Snowy, but he escaped and I had to return him.

Yesterday I was walking to work and found a white mouse by the curb on the street. I couldn't believe it! I put it in a box and kept it at work with me all day. That night my girlfriend picked me up and we went to the pet store and bought all the things we need to have a pet mouse. Turns out we are going to have 6-7 pet mice since the one I found is female and pregnant! I am so excited because she is friendly and so cute! I am really glad there is a website like this to help me since I am new to having a mouse and as soon as she has her babies, I plan to get a couple more!

My mouse Snorkel just passed away in my hand....=[ 1.5 years old, she was freaken awesome. She had her own personality, would always let people pick her up, would run around on my bed and always come back to me. She was just a gem. R.I.P my little friend... xxxxxx

A friend of mine bought a mouse to feed to his pet spider... I thought it was horrible! The mouse was in the cage for over 15 hrs running away from the spider and eventually the friend took him out and gave him to me cause he knew I loved the little guy. I was so impressed with him. I bought him so much stuff and he is healthy and happy with me :) I named him lucky for obvious reasons. I will get him a friend soon so he is not alone, a nice female :) I love him so much.

My little wild mouse, Mr. Mouse just died a few minutes ago. I am so sad. Even though we named her Mr. Mouse, we later learned she was a girl mouse, but we kept the name. I had her 5 years!! My cat had found a nest of baby mice and kept killing them and bringing them to the back porch. Our son Daniel found the baby mouse with her eyes still closed. We brought her in and fed her with an eye dropper. My daughter-in-law had some powdered milk she had been using to try to raise baby birds. We mixed it with water and we fed Mr. Mouse that and then later, I made thin oatmeal and fed her that. Soon she moved on to regular small animal food. I gave her a treat of fresh carrots, cheese, broccoli or banana every day and put a drop of vitamins in her water. She was well loved by the whole family and will be missed very much. Janice

I found a half-drowned field mouse at work a couple weeks ago. I put him in a tupperware container until I could get him home. After warming up and drying off, he is doing great! I have a big wooden box for him, with toys and hiding places, and he seems to be adjusting just fine. He is actually pretty tame, and lets me pick him up and hold him and pet him. I was thinking about getting him a friend so he isn't lonely, but I don't know where you can get field mice. I want to get the same type so that they don't fight. Does anyone know where I can find them?

nicole 2009-07-21

I found a little mouse or rat that is barely born. I will help him, I don't want to kill him.

Anna 2009-07-14

I'm planning to get 2 or 3 baby albino mice, a male and 1 or 2 females. What do you guys think of the names Momo and Toji and Kairi,(these are names from Peach Girl, my favorite show ever!).

Brian 2009-05-09

I just bought 3 female fancy mice; Fonda, Fondue & Phantom a.k.a. Fanny. They are so freaking cute! I went into the pet store intending to buy a russian dwarf hamster, but saw these cute little guys running on the wheel and doing flips in it. I took them home and they seem to be adjusting. I will try to put some toilet paper tubes in the cage to see how they like that. I'm hoping they will be less skiddish of me as they grow use to their new habbitat. I am a happy new mommy :o)

High school science experiment white mice went from 10 to 25 in three weeks. I am sure some of the babies were eaten by the adults. Please tell us how we know which is male and which is female, and what do we do with all these baby mice???

AP Mom 2009-04-28

Saying that mice are nice babysitters for their young, our mice gave birth they had 7 babies and now there's only one... they are eating them! That isn't good parenting.

I have a charming pure white mouse named SIMON. He is very cute and intelligent too. He likes luxurious living. He is a cool dude. I just love him a lot. I love to play with him. I forget all my worries and tensions in the company of SIMON. He is just like my bay. I am emotionally attached with him. Simon is the cutest and coolest mouse in the world and I love him endlessly.

hi i have three mice for nearly a year now ( birthday 8th May 09) and one of them (hunka munka) has what i believe cancer. She was born the runt of the litter and as soon as i noticed a problem with her was when she was at her flea age and wasn't growing much hair near the scruff of her neck. Quite a few months later she formed a lump at the section of less hair. She has been perfectly fine (eating, drinking, running on the wheel, perfect mouse behaviour) until yestrday night when she formed a large lump pretty close to her front leg, this has been her only second tumor and still acted normal, so i seemed she wasn't in any pain. But the next day that afternoon back from school her whole body seemed bloated. A cancer cant grow that quick can it? It looks as if she is pregnant, but babies cant just form so quickly out of the blue can they? Anyway i also have noticed her behaviour. She seems to stay in her house. I took her out and she didn't seem to be in pain, no sqeaking etc, she is walking quite normally but it looks really akward. Is it her time? Should i take her to the vet and put her down. I really do not want her to be in pain? If it isn't cancer, what other measures should i take? Thankyou

My daughter just got a pair of pet mice, one a dusty brown and black named "Shadow", and the other a creamy white and tan that she named, "Peaches". Unfortunately, one of our cats was absolutely fascinated with her new "sisters", and knocked their cage (aquarium-style) off the little desk where it had been placed. Shadow seemed none the worse for wear, but Peaches' left eye was a little "goopy" (technical term) and now she leans over to the left wherever she goes. She has no other difficulties that we can see. My wife surmises that in the fall Peaches suffered an injury to that eye, and may even have been blinded there. Everytime that she approaches her food dish or her water bottle, she does so favoring her right side. Any ideas? Thanks.

I am getting a mouse soon and I am going to call it Dannan because it is an irish name and I love irish people. I'm unsure if I should get a girl or a boy as girls are prone to tumors and boys smell bad. So I will mull it over and decide when the time comes I suppose. If you are naming a pet I recommend naming it after something you love!

Sabrina 2009-04-13

I just recently bought 3 new female mice, Marley, MoMo and Friday. They all have their own individual personalities and love it when I re-arrange the cage layout so they can explore. They are all spoiled rotten and like taking seeds from my hand. Mice are very easy to keep pets and in exchange for a home and food, can bring hours of enjoyment. I highly recommend buying a mouse as a small, inexpensive pet.

I just inherited a little grey feeder mouse that my son-in-laws snake didn't want for food. Having just lost my pet rat four days ago, I agreed to adopt the mouse. I've named him Moxie, and am looking forward to getting to know this little guy. He seems very tame, friendly, and curious, but mercy, they are so much smaller than rats. I'm grateful for the information on this site, because there are some differences between caring for the ratties and mousers. Thanks for the helpful info.

I have had my three fancy mice for a little over a year. Chrysanthemum is the oldest and I got her 3/2/08 and Lilly is the middle mouse I got her in April, then I got Wimberly next. They are named after the children's books I used to read when I was a kid. I am 18 yrs old and I spoil my mice rotten. They are my three little princesses! They have 2 cages which are connected and one of them is three stories tall! and the other is 2. Pretzel treats are their favorite treats! Mice are now my hobby and I hope that mine live happy lives for a long time :)

In August of 2007 I noticed a white mouse outside at my parents house. It was feeding on birdseed under a bird feeder. I thought this was odd. I called a pet store and they informed me that white mice don't live in the wild where I live and won't survive a cold winter. I told my Dad that if he could catch it, I would keep it for a pet. A couple weeks went by and I had a new pet. It took some time for him to warm up but once he did, he was my little buddy. I named him LUCKY. I often told him he was my "little dog" cuz he had such a personality. I have had so many hamsters growing up and none of them can compare to the intelligence of this little guy. I have also had dogs my entire life and this mouse was right up there with what joy they brought. I lost LUCKY this past weekend, he died in my hand. I was so lucky to find him and I am thinking of going to a pet store soon to get another.

It's the middle of February in Cambridge, Mass. There's still ice and frozen snow piled along the sidewalks, but not on the patch of soil where a concrete square had been removed from the sidewalk to allow a planting. As I approached that bare piece of earth tonight I was drawn to a white puff lying in the dirt. When I bent close enough to realize it was a mouse I was surprised that it didn't run off, and I assumed it was dead. Had someone else thought that it was dead also, and put it out in the trash, or was someone carrying it in his pocket and it crawled out? I gave it a little poke and was rewarded by seeing it begin to breathe rapidly. So I scooped it up and put it in my glove and put that in an inner pocket of my fleece. What else could I do? The temperature is in the 20's and he was just waiting to be some cat's midnight snack. I'm not sure that a mouse is just what I need at the moment, and who knows, he may have escaped from some lab at Harvard where he was infected with some bizarre and deadly contagion. But the warmth seems to have revived him and he seems quite comfortable in a heap of toilet paper with a little clump of oats and a tiny slice of apple, inside one of my Tupperware containers which now has a perforated cover. On your advice I'm planning to leave him alone except for necessary feeding and cleaning while he recovers from his great adventure. I have you bookmarked in case I need some more mouse rearing advice.

I had pet mice from when I was 12-17, and I miss them dearly. I started with a pair of females, an albino and a fancy black and white mouse from a pet store, and then about a year later, my mom adopted a little male from the Humane Society while she volunteered there. Later, after the two females passed away, I bought another pair and bred them with the male, so I ended up with a litter of 12 and another of four. I have so many great memories...and I miss my little mousers.

Omg I posted a message about my mice a month ago and now I realize that the mice that I bought were pregnent when I bought them. I went in to my room to feed them and I saw two newborn spiny mice. I had no idea they are so cute.

Can someone email me about my mice theyre so jumpy i want to know how to stop it please.!.!

luke tomkins 2009-01-24

At first I didn't really want to keep a pet mouse, but then, one of me friends bought a snake and feed it with mice. It turned out that the mice were too big. Rather than letting those poor mice die one by one, I took them as pets. Unfortunately, I can only save 1 out of 6 because of their pitiful living conditions. This surviving mouse is still going on strong today and lives a good life in a large aquarium. Now... I'm going to buy 2 or 3 more mice for her friend... BTW I named my mouse Davy... as in Davy Jones

For christmas I got 2 pet mice, both girls. My mum and sister got boy mice and they bred and bred. We ended up with 80 mice and still counting, eventually the cat got to them and now we only have 8 left.

I recently went to my local pet store to purchase a hamster. My mother was with me, at the time. She remembered my mentioning that I wanted a mouse and I had spent time looking at other creatures. Mom talked me into purchasing a mouse, my knowing that mice are social creatures, I ended up getting two mice. They are very friendly, playful, and entertaining to watch. Their names are: Allegra, she spends a lot of time on her exercise wheel, and Macee, who love to help Allegra with her exercises. When they are asleep, it is very cute to see them cuddled up together.

Bobby 2009-01-02

I just got a new mouse for Christmas, Jojo, but I can't seem to get socialized with her. Everytime I go near the cage, she starts running on the wheel trying to escape me or something. And whenever I try to pet her, she darts around the cage and won't let me touch her. I've tried holding out food in my hand but she doesn't trust me and backs away. Please help!

Emily 2008-12-30

Recently I had gone to the pet store with my friend, she wanted to buy a parrot. When my eyes fell on this aquarium behind one of the huge cages, in this aquarim were these lil cute mice, they were so adorable I just had to have them! I got two of them, ozzy n olivia! They are just so friendly I love them a lot. As soon as I brought them home I came online in search for information on how to take care of them, and thanks to this site I got all the information I need. I built them a home. They are so playful and friendly. Every evening I take them out and let them run free in my bathroom (no fear all my drains are sealed). I spend most of my time watching them and petting them. When I tell my friends that I got mice as pets their 1st reaction is grossed out or "eauwww", but once they see them they fall in love with them! But my greatest fear is that I'm living in pakistan and here we don't have any vets. The only vets we have are for cats and dogs. So I'm really trying my best to keep them healthy n anyway 4m anythin dat can make them well. I wash their box and toys with hot water to disinfect them. I really love them a lot and I am really afraid of loosing them. They are just the best pets ever and they make me so0o0oo happy.

Angel.G 2008-12-29

I have 3 mice. One is a normal mouse (the ones you feed to snakes). It's name is Samantha and she is so sweet. I would recomend this mouse for kids. I also got two Egyptian Spiny Mice for Christmas, Isis (Like the Egyptian goddess) and Cleo (Like Cleopatra). They are so cute but they bite! I think it's because they are only a month old but I don't know. I used to have anouther normal mouse named Lucy but it died from a siezure dure resently. All I was doing was holding it and it started having a siezure in my hand. It had done this a few days before too and fallen on the ground and when Ipicked it up it was falling over but I pushed it on to its feet. Then when it happened again a few days later it stopped moving and wouldn't go on it's feet. It was so so so sad, but I never ever regret having her.

corrianne 2008-12-27

I just got three more female mice. If I had never found this website, they would all be dead. Also, I wouldn't even have a mouse if it weren't for it. Thanks for all the information.

Meena Fech 2008-12-21

I got my first mouse in third grade after I saw a TV special on pet mice. His name was Scamper and he was by far one of the best small pets I've ever owned. I loved him so much, I got another little mouse named Squeakers from the same pet shop. They were my two little buddies, and I had Scamper until fourth grade and Squeakers until fifth. I then got hamsters, but I still prefer mice much more. They are the best types of small pets you could ever ask for! My mice never bit me, they always loved a little scratch behind their tiny ears, and they were my best friends. No matter what, I highly recommend mice as pets for children. I'm now in eighth grade and I'm planning on getting my seventh mouse. If you want a small, easy-care pet for a child, I'd recommend mice in a heartbeat.

Olivia 2008-12-01

I'm in 6th grade and I'm doing my science fair project about mice and diet and exercise. This website was very useful for my backround reasearch paper and final report. Thank you, but I just need the author and published date.

I've just gotten 13 mice recently [I know, big number]. I walked into the pet store, and happened to glance over the counter where the rodents were placed. Behind the counter is were they kept the feeder mice. The first mouse I spotted was a little baby blonde colored one, and I immediately fell in love. I bought him [supposedly] and a few others, and everyday I keep coming back for more. To keep them from being eaten, of course. So far I have five adults, 2 white males, and one white female, a black and white female, and then a grey and white male. Next I have 5 white babies, then a tan one, a grey one, and a greyish brownish one with a white stripe down his face. Though the babies are so much cuter, the adults are really the most calm, and a better choice for young children. I have mulitple siblings, and they all reached for the babies, but they ended up holding the adults,[since they were the ones not running away]. I find it very facinating when they groom themselves, it's almost like a self anti-depressent medication. They're very calming, inspiring creatures, I've made multiple sketches in my art class of my mice. Some of my best work so far...

Courtney 2008-11-19

My fancy mouse seems to be chewing the tip of her tail. Is there anything that I can do to prevent it???

sara 2008-11-14

I just got two new baby mice. They are so cute and smart! When I first saw them, I wanted to jump off the walls. They run on the wheel together. Sometimes one of them would go faster than the other one. The slower one would get started and would hold on while the other keeps running. How will I ever live without these acrobats?!

Meena 2008-10-30

Never pick a mouse up by the middle of the tail! it is always the base or it will slough off or break!

S 2008-10-29

I have mice and one had 12 babies. They are awesome. They are about a week old on Thursday night. I find mice very interesting. I love them too.

Summer 2008-10-22

I am thinking about getting a little rodent friend and mice are just so cute, I must get one! I saw some in a little cage at a museum and I thought omg they are so cute. I know most mice are considered dirty but my pet mouse would be clean as a whistle!

Lindsay 2008-10-17

I have four mice. 3 differen't species. I have 3 Egyptian Spiny Mice (Dustfinger & Jinx), one Church Mouse (Firefly) which I raised since she was just weened from her mother (her home had been destroyed and she was just sitting on the ground so I cared for her and found out that she had a slight eye infecton so I put some eye cream for mice in her eye and she was healthy within two weeks). I used to have another Church Mouse that I raised as well (Clover) but he got out from the cage when I was feeding them (he was a very skittish mouse and didn't like me very much) and my cat caught him and killed him. I was heart broken when I found out. Even if he didn't like me I still loved him and raised him and I do miss him and I feel terrible that Firefly doesn't have a friend anymore. I just bought a male Fancy Mouse (Echo) so that Firefly would have a friend but I came to the conclusion that Church Mice and Fancy Mice do NOT get along. They fight so I'm seperating the 45 gallon tank in half and might be getting another fancy mouse (a female). This site is amazing! It gave me so much great information on mice that I didn't know about. Thank you so much!

Sara Garcia 2008-10-08

I have a friend who has two pet mice named Daisy and Snickers. I don't know how old they are, but she hasn't had them for that long. Anyway, a couple days ago, I was over at her house for a birthday party, and I had asked how the mice were doing. She's like; "Daisy is great, but something is weird with Snickers. It's like she's eating herself." I got really scared, but she told me not to worry because she was only eating her fur. I got a good look at her, and sure enough, right in a little section by her tail that was bald and red. I don't think it was infectious, because Daisy is just fine. I don't know what's wrong! I've looked through Google, Wikipedia, and this site, but found nothing about a mouse actually "eating" herself. I want to help my friend, but I don't know how! Please help!

Patrice 2008-09-30

I have an adorable caramel coloured mouse called Tango, he is sooooooo cute! I have been begging my parents for a pet for years, and I'm going to get a proper mouse house for him for my b'day and possibly another mouse, because I'm currently keeping him in an old canary cage(LOL)!

madi22 2008-09-27

Hello, I bought 2 mice a month ago (Marvin & Bella) at my local petstore. They used to be snake food, I felt bad and didn't much care what colour they were, as long as I had a mouse! Well, yesterday Bella gave birth to 14 babies! So now I'm doing a lot of shopping for cages and toys when it comes the time to separate them. The more you have, the bigger the risk that they could get sick. So I have your page on My Favorites, this way I'll be prepared just in case! So thank you.

hi... I have had my pet mouse for about 2 months now. I LOVE her so much! I named her Cow because she is black and white lol. About two months ago I was walking into a pet store and they had her by her tail about to feed her to a snake. She was so cute! So I told the man I would take her. He charged me 15 bucks but it was worth it. I don't know what type of mouse she is... snake food I guess, lol. Any ways thanks for this site, it helped me out a lot. nichole. age 16.

I had a mouse in my house for 3 weeks that was too smart for the dang traps. Well, I walk into the kitchen one morning to find two baby mice, brand spanking new, on floor. I pick them up and put them into a container. I started to get attached and so did my daughter and son, ages 1 and 3. I went out and came home that night to find one had died, no big shocker. But then I turned around, and there was another one laying close the same spot as previously! I put that one in with the live one after I scooped out the dead one. Later that night around 1 am, I opened an empty wipes container, lined it with a washcloth for warmth, put on gloves, and washed the babies. After I put the two in the wipes container, I turned around to find another baby! I cleaned that one too, and then I put some vit. D milk (at room temp) in a syringe and fed the babies. They ate pretty well. After meal time, I played them a bit, watched them roll over in my hands and squeek a few times. The next morning, I woke up to feed them and realized that one was about to die, gasping for air. So I held it and was petting it, hoping that it would go in peace. Poor little guy. I want the mice out of my house, they poop everywhere, but those poor babies, I don't know how to take care of babies that should be nursed by their mother.

Nancy 2008-08-04

Hi, I have 2 pet mice. I want to know how to differentiate which is female and which is male. I also want to know if once the babies are born, will the mom or dad eat them up.

My aunt won't buy me a mouse because she thinks their poison...

We had out mouse, Polkadot, for three to four months. When we got him, he was pregnant, so we came to find out that it was a boy. It was my daughter's mouse, but he came to be part of our family. We all loved him. He was a little strange to us, but cute as can be. He passed away in his sleep yesterday, may he rest in peace. He is loved but not forgotten.

CATHI AND ROSIE 2008-06-14

Just like to say that they dont neccessarily reach sexual maturity at 6 - 8 weeks, so be careful. My male and female mated and got pregnant at 3 and a half weeks old each. So mum gave birth to nine healthy babies at only 6 and a half weeks of age :) Be careful to separate males and females as early as this, as it can happen! :)

Elle 2008-05-31

I've had mice for a long time now. I recommend them as pets for someone who doesn't have much space, and wants a pet that is cheap. Mice can be a great starter pet for children that are mature enough to understand the fragility of such a small animal. I work in a petshop and see a lot of mice come and go every day, they're wonderful pets if you are willing to spend time playing with and taming them. Each of the mice have been handled daily from birth and are so friendly they run up and sit on my hand when I put it in their tank. I keep both boys and girls separately, but I recommend that you only own mice of one gender even if you keep them separatley unless you are intending to breed. No matter how careful you are, accidents do happen. If you're looking at getting pet mice, the best thing to buy is a tank with a secure lid, as long as there is plenty of ventilation. Paper cat litter or Carefresh are great bedding for a mice tank, but I add shredded paper and unscented tissues to their houses and nestboxes so they can have a comfy bed. My boy Aslan tears up his tissues and makes a huge nest he sleeps in the middle of, it's extremley cute (: An important thing to realise is that female mice especially may contract tumours, when this happens there is very little you can do besides having them put to sleep humanely at the vet's when the tumour begins to impend their movement. This happened to my little girl Esme a few months ago, and though it was very upsetting, I'm glad her life ended before she had to suffer. I breed my mice ethically occasionally to sell at the petshop where I work when we are low in supply, this way I can meet the owner's of their future homes. The only way I will sell one of my babies is if I believe the person will honestly care for that mouse as well as I would, because they are taken care of very well at home.

I have one female mouse.I got it from a pet store just today and the pet store lady said that she was pregnant. As soon as I got home she started sniffing and digging huge holes in the bedding. That night she had her babies!

My oldest daughter came home with one shoe on and one in her hand and said, "Daddy I found a mouse. I put it in my shoe." Living around farm land I assumed it was a field mouse and told her she has to set it free. She said, "But it's white." And it was. Apparently someone had let it loose. So we took it in. I made a temporary cage out of a wicker basket and some shredded newspaper for bedding. I took notice that she (aka) Cracker was doing small, quick laps in a circle, always in a clockwise motion. I did a google search and the first link I clicked on was yours. It told me 2 possibility's. My wife came home and was instantly attached to her. I told her what your site had said then she called the vet down the road. She took the mouse in and came home 20 min later with some antibiotics in powder form to put in her water. It was an inner ear infection. My wife said 36 bucks well spent. Then she went out and got a new Hartz cage. The family would like to thank you for helping us save a cold scared abandond new pet. No need to post if to long. Just wanted to say thanks.

I have 18 adult mice and 30 newborns. They are in a huge outdoor cage filled with ramps, tightropes, a slide, tunnels, huts and a 30cm by 30cm pool. Instead of sawdust on the ground I put carpet to make it more like a home. There are usually about 30 mice born a month and when they are grown up they are given to the pet shop. My mice love swimming! The best swimmer is T-bone. He is a curly haired albino mouse. My mice LOVE to eat sultana's, lettuce, cereal, cat biscuits, musselly bars, raisin toast etc etc. I love having mice and I recommend them as a pet! :D ...R.I.P to Ollie the Mouse (Who died of old age yesterday)

I cannot emphasize enough how bad an idea it is to house multiple males together. I made the mistake of housing 3 males together; 1 died within a few weeks (I suspect from stress) and the other 2 fought for the remainder of their lives, to the point of drawing massive amounts of blood. I actually thought they'd end up killing one another. Males' urine also smells intensely: I can guarantee that a male's cage will constantly stink no matter how clean you keep it. Females get along just fine, however, and without the offensive odor. Make sure to provide plenty of toys. They can and will chew through soft plastic (including some water bottles!). Make sure not to overcrowd too many mice into a cage. Every pet store I've ever been to has provided inadequate room for mice, and many cages marketed for mice (e.g. Habitrail, SuperPet) are sufficient for no more than 2-3 mice, max.

I just got an albino little girl mouse and she's scared. Hopefully she'll get used to me, but I found the information here helpful.

I have recently become a proud owner of a mouse family. When I first got mine the male was definately well endowed. The female really loves him and their cages are set next to each other so they can visit (without touching) while she raises the young. The male actually sings and tells bedtime stories and even has a ton of a mating call that brings the female to his side of the cage and seems to send the babies to bed for naps. Even though they are only 26 days old, I'm finding that the two known males of the litter (very well endowed and dominant) are actually having fights for their attention. The little females could care less if they are around or not. So I believe that they are maturing faster than the average mouse would. At first it seemed like play but there are times when they need to be separated for a time. Their mom is friendly and their father loves people, they make a good pair and they have been fun to be with. The rest of the litter proves at least one female and the others being smaller, not yet definite but are looking female. My female had her litter (each individual pup) one hour apart, caring for the new born with cleaning and feeding as soon as it was born then putting it in her self made nest. I had cut small 1 inch squares of paper towel for her. She lined the bottom of her box then proceeded to place one square of paper towel over each baby as she placed it in the nest. It was amazing to watch her as if she was putting a blanket for warmth over her new borns. I wonder now how often she watched me going to sleep at night. She seemed so unbothered by my watching her through the whole process... she's amazing! And I thought I didn't like mice.

I have a brown and gray young mouse named Rita. she has some of the best qualities a mouse could have. After reading this I know the best ways to take care of the best mouse! I thank you very much!

I have a small white and brown mouse named Ratatouille. He is a male and very kind. If you leave him on your chest he will find his way to the back of you and back again. I have to be careful because my mouse is staying at my Grandmas right now and my grandpa doesn't like pet mice in the house. Well my uncle who has moved out left his corn snake here and my mouse was suppose to be snake food, but I saved his life. He is just the cutest little mouse ever.

My neighbor has a pet mouse and she just had babies. There are about 7 gray ones and two dark brown ones. I want one really bad, but my mom is afraid of mice and my dad thinks that mice make crappy pets. He says that they stink and that they dont do anything:/ I really want one because I love mice. I think they are soo cute, and I love to hold my neighbors mouse all the time! :] -Lauren-

We have 9 white mice. These are our pets. We are breeding them because we have 3 corn snakes. A few nights ago while cleaning their tank we found 6 babies and at least 5 or 6 other mice are pregnant. Last night a few of them were running around with babies hanging out. We think there is probably 20 or more babies in there now. One of the females was the size of a small kiwi. We like to watch them run and play. They are very entertaining. I can see it now... we are going to get attached to them (they are just sooo cute) and have a house full of fluffy little friends.

After the hurricane katrina I got depressed, so my husband suggested that I should have a pet. Since they are not allowed in our apt., we bought 2 female fancy mice (sept. 19,2005- she was estimated as 6 month-old). One of them I happened to choose by accident (I named her maya). At first I was hesitant since I never had a mouse for a pet! I named the one with an eye-patched, or as we call 'em a "black-eye", since she has this cute black color on her left eye, MAYA. I remember how she really turned my world upside down. She made me happy. The next year(2006) we moved to texas. She was still with us. She was with me while I studied to become a nurse not to mention all the trials and tribulations that my life had been... Whenever I am down I just talk to her and then I would somehow feel relieved. A year later we bought a new home with MAYA still alive after 3 batches of her playmates (since we always buy her 1 or 2 playmates whenever each one expires). She enjoyed being cuddled, lightly stroke her head and I would smell on her body almost the whole time. She was literally my oxygen. She loves it when I bring her to bed with me. Anywhere around the house we would play. She always recognized it whenever we called her by name. Funny how I treat her differently from all her mice-mates. They seem to exist only just because iI dont want Maya to get lonely. Now it is feb.18, 2008 and it was her time. I was devastated, too much for me to handle. If you knew me before Maya, I think you would say that I have changed a lot and that the world is really unpredictable, crazy, full of love and wonders. I dont know, I felt like part of me died with her. She died peacefully in her bed. I think it was old-age. I'm counting she lived to be 36 months! I think my love for her surpassed anything. She lived to be a very happy, peaceful, much-loved and a very clean and healthy mouse and we were both lucky to have found each other. I think and I truly believe that she has already fulfilled all my wishes before she left, but she'll always be with me. I love you my only baby MAYA!! (I'm crying inside while I'm typing this)

I have 2 pet mice, both females. I just got another one from petsmart because I had a cage with bars, but my cat got my little white mouse through the bars and killed her )=. So if you have pet mice and cats, don't buy a cage with bars. I would recommend a glass aquarium or plastic cage. Well now I have a nice new durable plastic cage and a new mouse. In the cage there is a little wheel and their puzzle playground (they are happy mice now) (=.

Hi, my name is Rebekah. A have a mouse called Mickey. He is black and white. My cat nearly got him. He was lying there like he was dead, but he pulled through for me. I have loved mice for ages. When I got one I thought it was too good to be true. I think mice are great first pets and they are great listeners because they don't interupt when you are talking. If you are looking for a friend, get a mouse. They are easy to look after and though heaps of people think they are yuk, buy one and I'm sure you'll like them. But if you don't, you could give it to me, especially if it's a girl because I think I mine needs a real girl in his life. Thanks for listening to me and Mickey's story. I hope if you get one you like them.

I have a pet mouse named Motzarella (Motzi for short). She is a white mouse with red eyes and is incredibly well behaved. Motzi knows a couple of rope walking tricks. She was the perfect mouse for me to teach the break dance to, on account of her habit of running in circles. Motzarella does not bite. She likes people. She also is brave. When she looks at my dog, Ruby, Motzi doesn't pee like other mice. My mouse is the best pet I ever had!

Hi there my names R.J. I recently bought 7 mice from petsmart. We were keeping them in the same cage as they were all fine together in the cage at the store. When we brought them home the one mouse just basically snapped and almost killed the other, so we took him back. We told the employees what had happend and then they told us that you should not have 6 mice all together in one cage and they would not take them back. So I still have them but I had to buy 4 cages just to keep them from fighting. We still put the 6 together every day hoping that they will get along but they still fight. So basically I have to keep them apart :) but i still love having the.

I've always loved mice since I was a child. I found my first nest of wild baby mice in my uncles barn in the glove box of an old car being stored there. They were so tiny, pink, and delicate. Thankfully their mother had them safely hidden from the farm cats (though my Uncle wasn't so pleased to have mice in his barn). Years later I bought a white mouse at a pet shop. She had a short, shiny, silky coat, and was just weaned from her momma. I took her home, named her Twinky, and kept her in a 10 gallon aquarium with a mouse wheel (for exercise), a tiny coconut nest(with a hole drilled in it for sleeping during the day), cotton critter bedding material (to sleep on in the coconut), well cleaned grape vines (for climbing on), dust free wood shavings (for the tank floor), a tiny bell shaped bell on a thin piece of wire hanging from the tank lid (for her to play with), 2 tiny ceramic dishes (for water and food), and a plexyglass lid (which I drilled tiny air hole in and glued a handle on - as mice can get their tiny claws/toes ripped out when a screen aquariun lid is used). Her main diet was freshparakeet seeds (a fresh tablespoon a day), and sprouted and well rinsed parakeet seeds (1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day) Sprouting seeds shows you if the seeds are fresh or too dried on the insides to have any food value (animals and birds that eat dried out seeds will end up slowly starving to death and you won't know why). Treats were a sunflower seed, 1/2 of a raw peanut, a pea sized piece of cooked sweet potato, or a pea sized piece of apple (2 pieces of any of these treat foods, in these serving sizes, are plenty per day - remember, fat mice have short lives). I kept a small pet mineral stone in her cage for her to lick, a small pieces of deer antler for her to gnaw on, pieces of small animal chew sticks for her to chew, and I used ferret cage sanitizer to clean the inside of her cage once a week (making sure to clean any sanitizer residue off the inside of the cage) also used it to sterilze my hands before and after holding her. I took her out of her cage to play, exercise, and explore ever evening for several hours (mice will develop arthritis and nerve disorders if kept in a cage constantly). She loved having her ears and chin gently stroked (after she calmed down from exploring) a sure sign she was ready to be put back in her cage. She lived to the ripe old age of 3 1/2 (almost 4) years (old for a mouse)and never once bit me. She was a sweetheart!

I used to have 2 female mice. It is not true that mice from the litter will not fight. My two mice fought and one killed the other one. They were great pets and easy to handle while they lasted, though. I am going to get another mouse, but only one this time!

jessica 2008-01-25

Hi. I bought two mice to feed my ball python, but after a while I became in love with them and now they are soon to be parents! I came here to know if I had to take out the male after giving birth, but now I know I dont. Thanks for the information, it was great!!

Christeh 2008-01-23

I have only one mouse. (Scabbers) He has never had an illness or any problems. His favorite thing to do is to annoy me with his wheel. A mouse is a great pet.

Zach 2008-01-11

I just came from the vet and had to put our pet mouse to sleep. For the last 3 days he`s been up a bit but moreso down shaking and hitting himself againist his cage. Last night he was eating some mashed potatoes and was in his wheel for a bit, but this morning was hitting his cage again. The vet said he had a stroke because he kept going round in circles, he was very unbalanced. I feel like I did a bad thing....did i do the right thing....we got him second hand, maybe he was old.....i`m sad.

My sister/roommate kept 4 pet mice in my basement. She went away for 2 days, and called after a day, asking me to feed the mice because she forgot to feed them before she left. I forgot. When she got back the next day, three of them were dead and the other one was happily running on its wheel. She's very sad and I feel guilty. She keeps picturing the one mouse that was curled up in its food dish apparently looking for food that never came. Her 3-year-old will not be happy that the pets he named Squeak, Brownie and I-forget-the-other-one's-name-and-I-can't-exactly-ask-my-sister-to-remind-me are dead... Thanks for the site, very informative.

I have 2 white fancy mice. If my mice have problems such as ringworm or mites, then I go to see vet in Ashland, MA. I like fancy mice best, and a mouse with training will do tricks for you. See you soon...

jay gibson 2007-12-22

I have two male mice. I seperated them because I thought one of my mice was hurt the other. I had seen signs of aggression and when I felt scabs on my mouse Gus. So, I separated them. Gus kept getting scabs even after they were separated. I didn't think it was a parasite at first because my other mouse Bucky was fine (they were still sharing a cage only they were separated by a piece of wire mesh), I thought Gus must be overgrooming himself. He got so bad I had to take him to the vet. She said it was a parasite called Sarcoptic Mange or "scabies". The reason Bucky was never infected was because the scabies prefered the taste of Gus.

your site is a fantastic source for mouse information. this site will be put as a reference for my science fair project because of it's information!

You should never handle a mouse if they don't want you to. They may be very scared. Get to know them first and then little by little offer them food with your hand so they craw on themselves. This website is also very helpful- www.petwebsite.com

I used to have pet mice when I was in high school. It's been four years since I graduated and now I have pet mice again. I have a black and white female (Mémé) and an albino male (Axel). I've only had them both since Friday, October 19, 2007 - and already Axel is sick. I've been researching how to help him get over his respiratory illness (whatever it may be) and hopefully he will get better. Nice site, by the way, it sure provided the answers I was looking for.

AJ Oatsvall 2007-10-24

Female mice don't always get along with other mice. I had a female fancy mouse and a young feeder mouse (eyes open but very small) and the older female killed it, even thought the people at the pet store said there would be no problems. I guess I'm just saying be careful, because even though I watched them interact for over an hour, I checked the next day and my baby had been killed.

Anonymous 2007-10-21

I have two female mice, they are both albino. Ones name is Frenchy and the other is Charlie. One is so active she stays on the wheel all day and night and the other is the opposite! They are still in the stage of being in the unknown but I have still kept handling them, even though they don't want me to. Hopefully they love me!

Heather 2007-10-21

I got all my mice a month ago and i love them all to pieces. Right now one of my females named spot is giving birth and its so exciting! I planned on her having some but if you don't want a lot of mice, dont buy both sexes. It's not smart, but if you do then great. It's an awesome experience and i can't wait until she has had her first one!

Briana 2007-10-21

I got my mice August 28, 2007 and the brown one [cupcake]is very friendly and not that active. I think she might be sick cuzz she had poop stuck in her butt for a little bit. The other one is sugar [white one] and i think she's to active lol. She has diarrhea ALOT but i really dont feel like sorting out all the fresh foods.

I got two mice, Kutcha and Whitey. I love them to pieces and am starting to teach them tricks. Kutcha and her pal, Whitey, now have an awesome part homemade toy! It is several tunnels connected so it makes an O shape. the top of two tunnels is removed and a cat toy bell thing is put inside. Whitey spent hours headbutting the bell!

I have kept several mice over the years and I find the more time spent with them the more you learn about their particular personality. Our pet mouse, Adamantius does not like mouse wheels at all, he goes a lap, seems to realize it's not going anywhere, and gets back off. He doesn't live in a cage, instead we keep im on a vinyl coated card table atop the corner coffee table. He looks over the edge and has never made any attempt to jump. He is very voicetrous if his food gets remotely low and comes out when he smells dinner. We usually share whatever we are having, he seems to have a thing for mild curries.

I just got my first mouse today. I have been looking to get a small critter for about a year, and I have been looking up things on mice, gerbals, and hamsters. Mice seemed the most easy going, and sweet.

I just got my first mice yesterday! They are the sweetest. There are 4 of them. Bellatrix, Lou-Lou, Ziggy, and Jo-Lee. They are some of the best pets I have ever had. I hope to give my mice the best possible life. This site was really helpful.

I absolutely love mice. I origionally had two mice, supposedly two girls, but one was a boy and so the first litter came about. One cage grew to two, then three, and then four. I loved all of them the same ^-^ Now I have 26 mice in total and a new litter has just been born. They live in my shed, which has basically been turned into a mouse paradise, hehe. They have their own air conditioner for winter and summer (and vents to keep the smell of the males at bay :P) and have tubing running all around the walls on the inside.I even added a small green house to grow some vegies for them ^-^ It took forever to build it all but it was fantastic in the end. :) My two original mice died in the past year, one from a tumour (which couldn't be fixed unfortunately) and one from old age +RIP+ Over all great little companions, even if they poop alot :P hehe

Rebecca. D 2007-07-30

I got my mouse when I was 13 and i felt like i had nothing to live for. So my aunt got me a mouse and then told me to come over. i saw a mouse and i named him oreo because he was black and white.

i have one mouse, hes a boy, and i called him gum drops. he is really funny and doesnt like his sleep being interupted, he hates that. he is funny with all the things he does and he can run on his wheel for over 10 minutes at a fast pace! he is great, a good companion. when i bought him he had mites but we got rid of them with a special mite and lice spray, its really good.

I got my first mouse for my birthday last December. I named him Stewie and my family loved him heaps. Then, last Friday, just as school holidays started, he disappeared. We were devastated. Then on Monday we got 2 girls and I called them Rebecca and Joan. Rebecca is black and white and looks exactly like Stewie did, except smaller. Joan is cream and fluffy. Stewie will always be missed, but the "girls" really help fill the void.

I just bought a mouse yesterday. It's so cute! I named it Peanut. I think a mouse is one of the best small animals ever. I've had hamsters, but mice are much better!

My pet mouse had 11 babies yesterday, there are now only 6 left. It's so sad and i dont know what to do, i hate leaving her to kill them but i know i have to leave her alone. :-( x.J.x

I have two pet mice, one is a girl and the other is a boy. The girl is pregnant so soon I will have thousands of them. They like to keep each other company and when ever i go and play with them they are always cuddled up together, so I bought them a little bed and they always sleep in it. They pull my curtain in and put it over themselves.

Taylor Oss 2007-06-21

I love my mice! My husband and I were so jealous of my Aunts saltwater aquarium and the hours we spent staring into it. We were at a flea market and bought 2 baby mice. We watch them for hours on end. They are sooo much better then a fish tank. Everyday we talk about what our boys are doing and what funny thing they had done today. We have named them Spunky and Flower and we have fallen in love with them. My husband is always buying them toys and I catch him talking to them all the time. They bring a lot of joy into our house.

Rebecca Lyons 2007-06-10

My mice are so cute. I have two of them that I got yesterday. Their names are Daisy and Hana. Hana means smelly in Japan. They love going on their wheel, it's there favorite hobby!

Stacy 2007-06-09

I am completely baffled on how anyone in this world could ever fear a mouse. Over the years with all the little "friends" that I rescued, they have all brought so much delight into my life. All of the mice that I have gotten (no matter how old or timid they were) they all quickly broke out of the shells once they realized that they were going to be spoiled rotten. They all have such heart-warming personalities. If they're not in their "Mouse Mansion", they follow me around, climb into my purse (and hope for a car ride to a friends house), snuggle up to me or one of my docile cats... -One even used to flatten out her full-grown body out through the teenie-tiny bars of her cage to come over to see me because she demanded attention. That was pretty bad, I'll admit. But she just didn't understand how I could be inside my room without letting her out to say hello! :) I will always love mice and try to get everyone around me to understand that they are not horrifying beasts that are out for blood. They are little friends that are out for a piece of leftover pasta from the night before. :)

We started out with 4 rats: Cake, Ice Cream, Ashley, & Dumbo for our daughter who wanted her own pet. We recently added 7 mice to the family. 6 females: Spot, Stripe, Oreo, Cookie, Fudge, Buttercup & the one male, Snow. Unfortunately we loss Buttercup to old age, (she was given to us by a family who no longer wanted her around). We bred all 5 females. Stripe had 3 babies 2 weeks ago and Fudge had 8 a week ago. We are expecting Oreo and Spot to have their babies any time now. My favorite, Cookie has become sick, showing signs of dehydration and is breathing heavy. We also believe she is pregnant. We don't have a vet around that takes care of rodents so I'm doing what I can for her. I don't think she is going to make it though. It is so fun to watch our daughter holding all the mice on her shoulder. We love them all and they really do make great first pets for kids as long as the child is old enough to care for them and be careful with them. We even have a photo album for all of our pets.

I love my little mouse Lucy- I only have one but she is the most beautiful mouse ever. She brings me so much joy and I am happy she wasn't doomed to the short life of being snake food. I love her and try to take care of her as best I can. She's so wonderful and makes me so happy because she's so cute!

Nicki 2007-06-03

I love mice, they make the best pets, I have 33 of them now and keep them mostly in big aquariams I've bought at yard sales, that's the best place to get tanks, just watch the paper. I have a wide range of kinds, like Pintos and a Silky, plus I have a chocotate fox who was born with no ears, isn't that weird? 2 months ago I bought a Pinto and she had 11 babies, and I managed to keep 5 of them, the rest went back to the pet store. Now I just try to buy older mice from stores where they're not being taken care of, so I can give them a good life...

I have 4 mice! Bleck is my favorite.. Boomer went insane and had to be seperated and i think Fleep is retarded but i still love them. Dashelle is the youngest and he is the prettiest but Bleck is still the best... he pretty much rules the cage. I love when they smoosh there bodies against the cage. Boomer is a fatty he loves junk food.. i think i over feed them. Oh well it's because i loooooove my babies :)

I used to have 3 or 4 'lab' mice, but unfortunately, they have all since died. The only female I had was pregnant, but sadly ignored her babies. I'm hoping to get some new mice, and breed them, and sell them as snake food...:[. I love having little pet mice because they're so affectionate, adorable, and tame, and I'm planning on working at a local pet store so I can have access to mice.

I have two mice and I didn't know if they were female or male or one of each till I noticed that one was pregnant. They had their babies today and I wanna separate the dad but scared he'll get lonely but I don't want more babies! LOL

Well i had one mouse, who is a baby girl and i got another one just yesterday. He might be a male, but whenever Willow (the girl mouse) is around, Domino (Male mouse) starts to chase her and bite her. I HATE it when that happens, so i separated both of them and i am going to give Domino away. im pretty sad

I've got 2 mice recently. Though they are still wary of me, they do take treats from me.

I just took in an orphaned mouse, whom I believe to be a less than or a week old. It's going to be quite a hard task to take care of him (I think it's a him), but whatever happens happens. I hope he makes it (:

HI, I have 2 mice and they are both females. They are so cute! I get the Female ones as tthey do not stink as much. I went to feed mine today and i noticed that one of them has lost all its hair on its head and has been bleedind, so i put the in and different container just for now. I think that the best pets are mice and dogs!

I really wish I had seen this site earlier. My boyfriend & I found out the hard way when our 2 males - "Dink & Shadow" started fighting like crazed wildmen. See we didn't know we couldn't put them together w/ the 2 new females -"Darla & Shade" I just bought last week. Unfortunately, we had to seperate Shadow from the rest & we're trying to figure out what to do next. Thanks for all the great info. & advice. Kari & Claude -- Houston, Tx.

i have six mice, down from eight, (two died earlier this year:[), and i just wanted to say they are the sweetest little pets ever! I have a white one who i named Spice, the eldest, and she will actually sleep in my hands! I have grown so attached to these little critters, I cant wait to buy more! But I'm going to have to buy another cage if i do get anymore, i have three cages hooked up together with lots of tubes and tunnels, but they keep wanting more! :]

Wow, thank you so much for this page! I am trying to convince my mother to let me get a mouse - my dad's convinced (I think). This provided me with lots of information to tell them about mice, and I'm very excited about this possibility. Thank you!

I just got two baby girl mice yesturday and they are so friendly. We became friends as soon as I held them. They are so cute, even my cat cant seem to find it in her self to hurt them. She lets them climb on her and sleep, its very cute to watch.
