Number of comments: 43Hi guys, as I know some petshops are not very good and you can't alway trust them when buying or asking for advice on pets or they are not friendy. But if you go to pet at home they are really nice and they make sure there animals are happy and not ill, and you can trust them with the advice, and they got big pet stores and loads of good stuff for your pets.
Bradley 2009-07-27Hi, I have one gerbil, well I used to have 2 but one of mine, he was called t.j, he died when he was 10 months old, we do not know why though. My gerbil now, his name is j.j and he is 1 years old, bless him. I love him so much. He has nothing wrong with him bless him. Me and my mum always hand feed him and he loves it, hehe! He lives in a gerbilariam all by himself but he is fine! He's out playing right now bless him. Oh yeah and he loves the hoover, as soon as he hears it he comes out and has a dig around! Bless his heart, my mum always says bless his little cotton socks, haha!
Holly 2009-06-26My mother has 7 male gerbils split into two groups- they are very friendly and funny. I breed gerbils for a hobby and a few days ago I had five, but since then my nutmeg female has given birth to three chirping, squirming little pups. Due to her age, this is her last litter, and so an older daughter of hers helps her clean the pups and keep them warm- as opposed to dad who would normally be there (male gerbils are great fathers!)
The babies develop so rapidly it is almost as if they do so right before your eyes and soon their fur will start growing; we are hoping for some spotted varieties or variant Dark Eyed Honeys. :)
Sarah 2009-04-04 I had 3 babies gerbils and 2 died, and 1 died today. I have no more babies but until next time, they are going to have babies again, and maybe this time I will see them grow up.
Amber 2009-03-02 Hi
I have two Gerbils they are both girls and live in the same cage together. I have had them a month now and they are really cheerfull. I would recomend that you leave them in their cage for the first two or three days, so that they can get used to their enviroment.
I love my Gerbils
cattie 2009-01-23I have two gerbils, one female and one male. They are kept in different cages because they are brother and sister, but long story short, my friend could not take care of the gerbils. I gave them so they have it back, but I love gerbils. They rock, sally and pepper are the best pets I have ever owned.
steph 2009-01-08I don't have a gerbil, but my classroom at school has 5. 2 big, old, fat ones and 3 baby ones. ( The old ones don't live with the babys!) I was just wondering if you could put a hamster, or other rodent, with a cage with gerbils.
Jordan 2008-11-15I have a gerbil named lucy. I got her as an early birthday present. Lucy LOVES GNAWING! She could gnaw for days. Lucy is the best and gerbils ROCK!
lassey 2008-09-12When I got my gerbils I got a black one and a brown one, the black one died. Unknowingly I got another one a while later, and despite what people say about doing that, they get along just fine! I keep them in a glass tank and my family and friends just love them! p.s. their names are Smokey and Bandit.
Nichelle 2008-06-12Gerbils rock! I have a pet gerbil named Nubby, but i might change it to... Princess!Like I said they ROCK!
Cody & Lexi Henderson 2008-04-19I have two gerbils that I got when they were babies, and they are fantastic pets. One is white and grey with red eyes, and the other is black with white spots and black eyes. Their names are Bungie and Tuxedo, if you're curious. :] They came from the pet store at the same time, but from two different cages and have gotten along fine. I let them run on the floor of my new apartment and they found a new hiding place under the refrigerator, so that was the end of free-range gerbils. Now they enjoy running around in a playpen I got them that connects to their four-story cage. They are pretty good about being handled and rarely bite. If they do it is only a warning nip letting me know they are ready to be set back down. In my experience gerbils are relatively clean INSIDE the cage, but like to burrow in their bedding and kick it out of the cage. I bought a "Cone" vacuum and haven't had much of an issue. I would definitely recommend them to anyone to keep as pets.
Kasey 2008-04-08Gerbils are amazing pets! Even though they don't live very long, they are perfect for little children because they are very calm. They are also very smart for their size. I have always kept gerbils because it is easiest for our family with a very curious little sister! I recommend gerbils to people who are looking for a great pet. Being desert animals they don't drink a lot of water, and so their cage doesn't smell so bad. They are also very sweet. They usually never bite. Anyone out there looking for a small, easy, adaptable pet... Get a gerbil!
Elsie Ferris 2007-12-04I had 3 gerbils. Yes had, but of course nothing lives forever. I am now left with 1 gerbil and his name is gizmo (his nickname is giz). He is very laid back. He sleeps with me some times and he never runs away. He goes on walks with me, he usually sleeps in my hoody pocket. I have had him for 7 years now and he's starting to get very hair(which is funny because he has black fur). He is my second favorite, my first was mozer, my white gerbil. It's been a year now since he died and he was even more laid back because he never lived in his cage. He was 12 years old (which is crazy because they are only supposed to live like 6 or 7 years), but i have no complaints. He had pink eyes and black hind feet, and gizmo is black with white front feet and a white stripe under his mouth. I love to watch him run in his wheel because hes so cute. My mom said I am getting a nother gerbil for christmas(i hope they don't kill each other). But then again mozer and gizmo hated each other and then became best friends to the end. But I still want a another cockatoo instead.
sara morrell 2007-11-25Hi... my name is Courtney. I have 3 female gerbils. 2 live together and 1 is alone. The one that is alone, Gary, i got from a teacher at school. She was going to drown him and half his tail is missing from some one picking him up by it. =(. She likes being the only gerbil and only responds to me! i dont pick her up. I just pet her gently and stick my hand in there. She watches me sleep and sits there and stares at me when i talk to her! She lives in a 10 gallon aquarium with a cage topper, that consists of 4 other wire cage levels. she loves it. Then, i loved her so much i bought 2 more, Snowflake and Snickers. I let them run all over me and my bed daily. I bought them when they were about 7 weeks old and they're siblings. They are so tame that i can take them outside and not worry about them jumping. They groom each other and love the company. I've had them about a year nearly. They live in another habitat the same as Gary's. all My gerbils seem to think their bathroom is their wheel. and That can really produce a smell... Yea! Snowflake is pure white... execpt she has some stains from snickers. She gnaws on her cage so all the fur is off her nose. She tilts and kinda has a hunchback, but I love her. She's perfectly healthy. When i first got Sno and Snick they had another companion that died. All of them had Wet tail... and i took then to the vet and Snowflake and Snickers survived. I only use brown fluffy bedding. Little wooden houses and bedding fluff for a bed. Gary has 2 bowls of food full at all times. The little ones have a feeder. I use a silent wheel that attaches to the inside of the wire and they love them! i have 2 on Snickers and Snowfkas cage and 1 in gary's. They all have salt wheels and i give them paper towel and toilet paper rolls to gnaw on daily. They all sleep on the top level and play in their aqaurium. Snowflake and snickers have alfalfa log and all of them have straw and hay. They have tissue boxes that i cut holes in to play in and gnaw on. they are awesome pets and i love all of them! sorry so long! =]]
Courtney 2007-07-12I am 12 years old. I love pets and just bought a gerbil they are so cute. I named him/her curious george because it is always trying to find something to hide in or explore. I love the size and although i have 2 cats and one dog, i think i can deal. All i have to do now is gain his/her trust!
Jennifer 2007-06-10I have two gerbils, hercules and Zeus, they are bith gorgeous and so friendly.
Emily 2007-02-15hi, i used to have two gerbils about 4-5 years ago and i loved them. i would love to get some more. i had two males one was a cremey colour and the other was black. i kept them in a big aquarium and they were fine. because of there tunneling nature, for a while we used a thick layer of soil so they could dig and they loved it. they made a little nest in the center. in the end the creme one attacked and killed the black at the age of about 3 and the creme one lived for another few months then eventually died. i would really like to got some more!
joe 2007-01-15I got 2 female gerbals about 2 weeks ago. one got wet tail after only 4 days after i brought it home, wet tail is rare for gerbils i guess. when i bought another they didnt get along, so i bought another one from the store i bought the new one at. They are very cute and fun to watch, the first one i got is alone though :(. I try to play with her but she is very scared, so i just put my hand in her cage about 10 min every day. She is dark brown with some black hair mixed in. Her name is Jasmine. The other two are albino and creme colored. The albino is Starla and the other one is Daisy. gerbils are great pets and easy to care for. I recommend them for anyone who wants a good pet.
Amanda 2007-01-13Hi! I got my gerbil in November. His name is maple. November 14 i got maple a buddy. He is called apple. they love each other! maple loves to groom and play with apple. They cuddle each other when napping. They are so CUTE!
Jenny 2007-01-04I got two gerbils today and i have never had gerbils before, they are so cute! i havent held them yet as i am letting them settle in. the first time i hold one of them will be the first time i ever touch a gerbil! They are sisters and i named them Taska and Cashmere. Taska is siamese (she is beautiful) and Cashmere is pure black and really glossy. i love watching them dig tunnels!
Elle 2006-12-21 I have two female gerbils, one called Coffee and the other Cream. Coffee is mine and Cream is my sisters, though I am worried for my Coffee as she has a large growth on her belly. Yes one of my former gerbils suffered the same way though not as bad. I have taken Coffee to the vet and she told me that it isnt anything to worry about at the moment, but if it got any bigger then it may cause a problem. It has gotten bigger and has a large hole in the centere, though it has stopped bleeding and I hope is on its way to healing.
Rachel 2006-12-10I have a gerbil named Blackbear that I have had for four years. She had a sister named Snowflake, but she died. Blackbear was the more active, curious of the two. Snowflake was the sweeter, more gentle of the two. I have had so much fun having them. Blackbear was my fourth gerbil (the only one alive) After many, uncountable years.
Sarah 2006-12-05Hi it's me again! Just to say that I got my gerbils on the 13th and they're fabulous! I could only get two not three so i had to drop the name Elmo :(
But Arthur & Zippy are great to have around! Arthur is brown and white & Zippy is black and white. Theyre about 7 weeks old now and gorgeous!
Nicola (again) 2006-10-24My beloved cat Timmy died recently and the house seems empty without him even though we still have the dog.
So I thought it would be good to have some new little friends to care for and I decided on gerbils. I have the 'gerbilarium' all set up which is a fantastic big cage with three levels and a deep layer (5") of sawdust for digging.
Im looking forward to the arrival of my 3 boys. Im still thinking about names but i have some ideas; Elmo, Arthur & Zippy!
nicola 2006-10-12Hi, my dad used to have tons of gerbils, so it was the only pet he let me get. I just loved the little gerbils to death. I had one gerbil that lived 4 years after i got it, and another that only lived about a week. I suggest getting two males, they have no reason to fight if there isn't a female around. Also, if you buy two male gerbils and one dies, then you may be able to get another one. i was lucky and my gerbil Fluffy (named after the 3 headed dog in harry potter) adapted to two new cage mates after his brother died. I now only have one gerbil named Frodo. he's brown with cute little white paws. he only nibbles if my brother or a stranger is holding him. I would recommend a gerbil because they're cute and cuddily!
Amelia 2006-09-25I have two gerbils..there used to be three. Gerbils are amazing pets! They are so smart, you can let them loose on your landing or bed and they are very careful not to get too close to the edge. All the gerbils were girls, a caramel one, mongolian and black one, the black one died. I keep them in a large-ish glass tank, I almost NEVER give them water, we give them vegatable peelings and fruit instead and use them to recycle most of our card. They are still very active, and doing well aged at 4 and a half years, (3 months when we got them).
Jonathan Street 2006-09-05i have 2 gerbils, latte and cheeky (both with me now). they have completely different personalities. latte is more curious and cheeky loves his wheel and his jar. cheeky is an angel in your hand but a devil when we let him go in the dining room. latte loves all his food and usually pushes cheeky out of the way for food. They are 5 mths old now and i dress latte up in a barbie celtics top. And we have an old toy car we put latte and cheeky in and they just enjoy the ride! Now they even know their names and pop up when they hear them. latte some times scratches the side of the cage when i'm there to get out to me!
latte n his mum 2006-05-19I just got two male gerbils which I have named Blueberry and Muffin. They are so adorable with there frisky whiskers and long tails. They are better than hamsters because hamsters would keep you up all night. They can keep you enternained for hours when they're not sleeping, because they are always so curious while they're digging, running, or exploring new toys that you can build for them. I would definitely recommend getting gerbils as one of your first small rodent pets!!
Allison 2006-05-06I have two awesome gerbil brothers. Cinder & Zero. When we first got them about a year ago. Cinder my little gray one had a broken leg and was the runt of the litter. I felt so bad for him that I bought him and his playful brother Zero and now he's the healthiest, cutiest gerbil ever! other than his big brother of course!
KayKay 2006-04-18I have a gerbil named Peanut! He is a joy to have around. He is playful and he is very healthy! I love him and he is one of my best friends!
Biscuthead 2006-04-03I had two gerbils like 2 or 3 years ago and they were both male brothers, were VERY cute and got along VERY well! But then Midnight died and Cinnamon turned rabid or something, and died like a month or so after Midnight died. i was sad and i really want gerbils and hamsters again, but i have rabbits. i breed and raise them so i have a lot of them. xoxoxoxox I LOVE GERBILS!
Ally 2006-01-20I had two Gerbils at once, they were twins.. nearly identicle. They were sweet and always on the go. My kitten loved them so much!! I had left one day to go to school, that evening i went to check on Zante and Dorie (gerbils) and Dorie had lost half of her tail.. she seemed to be fine.. to this day we aren't sure how it happened.. but we think it was the kitten..
Riki 2006-01-05I have had gerbils for I few years and they're my favorite pets. I used to have one named Gerby and now I have two named Oreo and Roxy. Oreo loves to ride on my shoulder and Roxy nibbles my ear when she's the one on my shoulder. They are very cute and friendly. I love them.
ashley 2005-12-24I've had two sets of gerbils. I loved the first very much...she was a birthday present :) i want to breed but i am having a hard time deciding and the quietness in my house is VERY limited.
Ally 2005-12-19I DID have a gerbil but it died a couple years ago. I loved it a lot. I cried for 10 min after it died.
Brooke Courtney 2005-11-30Gerbils are a really great, cute pet. They hardly ever bite, and they can even be sort of litter trained! They come from the desert, so they hardly ever pee, so they don't smell! I luv my gerbil!
casey 2005-11-16I've been breeding gerbils for three or four years. They're real enjoyable animals to watch while they play and try to dig through their home. I had six gerbils in the past and now I have eight gerbils from the last litter plus a mom and daddy. I have five girls and three boys. Note: They're not in the same cage except for two gerbils who are in the same cage. They're a mated pair.
They love to run around in their wheels and hamster balls. They're cute! Who could say no to a cute furry face? I couldn't.
Tracy 2005-11-05I've been breeding gerbils for the humane pet store I work at since around March, and I've fallen in love with the entire cycle! It is so amazing, watching little pink squirming things growing up into adult gerbils. I love the Siamese and Burmese variations and my pair of those just had their first litter of babies last night, three in all. It's a small litter, but I love them nonetheless.
Monica 2005-09-23yo! i have had gerbils for roughly only about a weeek now but i'm addicted to them! i have 1 and my brother has 1. mine is a white albino named zinni, his is a grey 1 called sparkel. i may get them a hamster ball because they can't work out how to use their wheel. they sit in it, smell it, crawl under it. but when it moves they get frightened! i have a summer house which allows them to run around in for 3 hours a day. THEY LOVE IT! zinni bit me very hard because i held her wrong! OUCH! but all i can say about gerbils is they are highly fun little companions!
p.s yodas a good name for a gerbil!
mark 2005-08-05I've had hamsters and gerbils off and on since I was little. Back in March, I started breeding them for the little Mom & Pop pet store I work at, because I know that they'll get taken care of (heck, I'm the one that does it half the time!). There are all sorts of cool colors, much more than the black, silver, and wild colors that are available at most pet stores. Yin is a Siamese and every one of them I have met has been extremely outgoing, including my four. Gerbils make excellent pets, they can be potty trained, and can also be trained to ride around on your shoulder while you walk around the house. They are hilarious to watch when taking a dust bath and, if you give them enough bedding (Aspen is best, definately not Cedar, the oils are bad for them), they'll make a complex tunnel system that's just as fun for you to explore. Enjoy your friends, everyone
Monica 2005-07-22i've had my gerbils now for about 4 months and i love them to bits they are called yoda and smeagol. ive built them a huge living complex in the shape of a castle and i let them out to run freely at least twice a week. they dont like hamster balls.
Sharon 2005-07-20This is a great gerbil site. I have had three gerbils for over two years now. I got them from a breeder, which I recommend. One never got to be full grown, but he is very healthy and oddly enough he is the dominant gerbil of the cage. They are great pets, and love getting out of the cage. When I put my hands in a cup they climb into it so that they can get lifted out of the cage. Though my gerbils can jump over 1 foot in the air, they still haven't figured out that they can jump out of the cage, which is for the better. One likes to nibble too hard on my hand, however, I am blowing on him when he nibbles to teach him. I didn't start early enough. Overall, gerbils are the best and cheapest pet to own. You get a lot for your money, and they basically take care of themselves. Just let them out of the cage at least for 20-30 minutes once every two days, as they love it! And don't chase them around, let them explore!
Jason 2005-06-15 I have had my two female gerbils since they were only six weeks old. Now they are fullgrown and very sweet. Gerbils are very active creatures. Gerbils also chew a lot. I do not recommend wooden or plastic toys because they are most likely to chew them up. Sometimes when I pick my gerbils up they will nibble on my fingers. This is the only disadvantage with gerbils. I think that gerbils are one of the least smelly rodents. You can clean their cage as often as you want, but I can usually wait for 3 or 4 weeks before cleaning the cage. If you get gerbils I recommend having two because one will get lonely. My two gerbils are in a 20 gallon aquarium, but most cages will do well.
Overall, I think gerbils are very good pets to have.
