I have a pet squirrel named Rocky for 14 months. Rocky was abandoned one day at my Doctor's house. He hopped on my shoe and would not leave. My Dr. told he that Rocky had been there since the day before. He was fully furred and the cutest. That night he almost passed. We fed him Gatorade, bought a cage, heating pad and followed some sound advice. He was too weak to stand by the next day. We fed him a scalded milk formula with an eye dropper and slowly he gained strength. He is now a great friend. He is to friendly to survive outside in the wild. He has no skills to exist. And he would miss me, as I am his best friend. We play for an hour to an hour and a half every night. I have him squirrel-sat by my mother-in-law when I am forced away from him. Rocky plays for about a half hour and the other hour or so we cuddle. My wife joins us during play time now and again. Rocky rests in my hands and I pat him and cuddle him. He loves it. Rocky gets a bath once a week (just warm water). His large pen is cleaned every day. I feed him healthy fruits, a few nuts, and a nut ball every day. I have a small parrot and two dogs that keep him company when I am gone. They inspect his pen to see what all the racket is, often. The chihuahua seams to really get him going. But they do not play together due to his razor sharp nails. WE ALL LOVE ROCKY

I also have a pet Grey Squirrel. I took him away from my cat when he was very little and fed him goat milk and now he's the most spoiled pet I have. He rides almost everywhere with me on my shoulder when I'm at home and loved jumping on my dog and going for a ride when we go on walks. His name is Bitter and he is def. the best indoor pet I've had.

I found my squirrel in May. He was in my driveway and couldn't move either hind leg or his tail. He was not a baby, but not full grown either. He was scared and needless to say not very friendly toward people. I caught him and after a month or two he became more and more trusting. He has since regained use of one leg and his tail but still drags one leg around. He runs all over the house while I'm home, watches TV with me, listens to music, and naps with me. He really has become the most awesome companion! He is not particularly friendly to anyone else (though he is not aggressive) but he has become a great pet and friend to me. I can't believe that such an affectionate, intelligent and clean animal has been around all my life and I never took particular notice...never heard of anyone who had a pet squirrel until now. I am always worrying that I am not educated enough about him and his needs so I am always surfing trying to learn more...thanks for your website!

How very, very sad that people would keep a wild animal such as a squirrel for a pet when there are so many dogs, and cats that need homes. These animals get put down everyday.

Are any squirrels legal in ontario, Canada.

Anonymous 2009-05-13

That page is so great because it has info about what you need to know, like interesting info about squirrels.

lilshann 2009-03-22

Please be aware that although grey squirrels are quite a common sight to see, and in many cases becomming the perfect family pet there is alot to learn about them, and in many cases we find that what we thought would be easy becomes very difficult and frustrating and can be very costly as once you have your grey squirrel you can not return it to the wild as i found out you can be liable to a £5,000 fine. you can contact me for further info should you have any questions about your squirrel, i will do my best to give you the advice you require.

On March 2008 we found a grey squirrel baby fallen out of a tree nearby. I gave him a mix of ideal milk, water and yellow of an egg. Later she start eating seads, nuts, fruit and vegies. She was like a real pet, playing and running around in the house. After winter about October we decided it's time for her to go home in the wild. We took her to a place with lots of oak trees. Putting her cage in one of the trees and feeding her every second day. She adores all the trees and was very happy. After 2 months she came done from the trees and still plays around with me. Jumping, climbing and curling around me. Also sitting still allowing me to scratched her body. Now I think she is going to have babies. Can't wait to see them. I am from South Africa.

Hi. I have a pet squirrel and her name is pickles. she is 2 and a half. recently pickles has been scratching her face and acting like it hurts. We looked in her mouth and realized that she has another front tooth growing in!! Has any one with a pet squirrel had this sort of thing happen. If you could please give me some advice on what to do i would greatly appreciate it!!

"Pet" squirrels MUST have Full Spectrum Lighting, and a healthy diet, which includes green, leafy, high calcium veggies...endive, kale, escarole, dandelions, and LITTLE fruit. Too much natural sugars in them. Also 70-80% of your squirrels daily diet should be Rodent Block. We have a specially made formula of rodent Block just for squirrels, that has been approved by Dr. Christopher Calvert, of the Animal Science Department at the University of California, Davis, and coauthor of the "Nutrient Requirements of Laboratory Animals, Fourth Revised Edition, 1995", and several of his colleagues as well, who are in the field of zoo diets. If you want EXPERT advice from MANY rehabbers, and very knowledgeable people with pet squirrels, please come to www.thesquirrelboard.com. Thank You!

Hi, I have a pet grey squirrel which is illegal where I live. I will be taking an exam next year to become a rehabber to help out and also to protect my squirrel "ownership" status. I have a huge cage for him and he is indoor/out and very tame. I've looked around to find out if there was another "legal" pet that is compatible with squirrels, but haven't found anything written on the subject. If anyone in this forum has experience and knows, I'd love to hear. Although I spend about an hour a day just playing with him, he is very social and I always think a companion would be more entertaining :)

We found our baby by accident thinking at first it was a baby rat. Then my grandfather saw what it really was and took it to my mother, who already had the experience of saving a flying squirrel. She used kitten milk. Fuzzy Butt, as we call her, survived and we kept her in our house that is made up of nothing but wood; chairs, cabinets, flooring and even our walls. We learned fast that we couldn't keep her inside so my mother built an outside cage that can fit four people inside. Fuzzy Butt is the highlight of the family's day. Only she has a thing against human males and our female dog that she chases all over our house.

Squirrels are wild creatures, and should not be kept as a pet. If raising an orphaned squirrel, they need to be fed esbilac, (Puppy formula) and not regular milk. They do better raised with other squirrels than being alone. If you find a baby squirrel take it to a rehabiliter, so it can be raised properly and released to be able to live like a real squirrel. In most places it is illegal to have any kind of wildlife unless you are licensed. You may think they are cute, because they are, but its not fair that captive squirrels cannot live the life that they are supposed to, free to be a squirrel.

Whole milk for humans will kill your squirrels, don't do it! Get them to a rescue center right away!

My name is leighann and I'm 15. About 3 days ago I found 2 baby squirrels. They are both girls, they're less than a week old, and they're so cute. Well, they fell out of my oak trees in my front yard, so I'm stil caring for them and I hope they make it. I'm feeding them whole milk warmed up for about 10 sec. with a syringe. One of them has a big appetite, the other not so much. They're bruised up and cut up badly, but once I saw them, I fell in love with them and I hope they make it. I named them- Scar-cuz it will have scars from falling on a bed of sticks ;( and Seeker-cuz she's all seeking for stuff.

8 months ago we found the sweetest pet ever! Yes, his name is Rocky. He is the most lovable, and smartest pet we have ever known. Yes, comes when we call him, and knows the word, "no" and gets mad, just as a child when he can't eat want he wants. He loves chocolate and prescription medicine! Our dogs, ferrets and cat had to get use to a new family member who gets his own way, and eats and sleeps when he wants.. He is only caged at night. He did get loose and go outside, but we got him back just fine. We have a rope hanging in our livingroom draped across the ceiling for our baby to run on. He plays, gets a bath, and sleeps in your hand. He just wants to be loved at all times, and we love him! I have pictures if you would like to see them.

Today my friend Hannah and I were leaving my grandmas house and I saw some little animals along side the road. I thought they were rats but my friend said no they looked like baby squirrels. We stopped and looked and sure enough they were. Well we picked them up and the young man that was at the house there said a crow had nocked the nest out of the tree and the mother never came for them. There were 4 but a crow had carried off one that had died instantly. So we took the three that remained home with me. We are now feeding them goats milk. We've had them for about 8 hours now, and I hope they live a long happy life.

Can anyone give me direction as to where to find the laws pertaining to wildlife in Western Washington? Looking for specific RCW or Federal codes that name the animals and penalties. Some people tell me it's illegal to keep an injured crow too injured to release, some say it's legal. Same with squirrels. What about an Eastern Gray squirrel in the Pacific Northwest. If someone rehabs it can it be released even though it's considered non native to this area? And if it's taken to a wildlife center would it be fed to the raptors as a recently turned in injured rock pigeon was? Thanks.

My friends found a squirrel when their tree got cut down so they desided to foster her. They named her Peachery. She is so cute she will just climb up your leg and jump from person to person, she will lick you to death. They let her go and she wouldn't leave so now she has a part-time home in their bathroom and a part-time home in the tree in their backyard. She is so cute.

My boyfriend and I found a baby squirrel last September in our back yard. It was so scared and tiny, my heart went out to the poor thing, and to tell you the truth he still has it! I bottle fed him and raised him to about 15 months old. He lived in the house with us, he was messy and very curious. He never bit me and I held him everyday. I was supprised to see how smart he was, he looked out the window a lot because he wanted to go outside. I was scared he would freeze to death so I tried to keep him inside, but one day I got up late and he was no where to be found, he had gotten out! I cried my eyes out. I called my boyfriend at work and he tried to reassure me that he would come back, and for me to go outside and call him, but Sweet Weet was nowhere. That was the saddest day I can ever remember having. Tony, my boyfriend, said when I called him to tell him that our baby was gone I sounded more pitifull than any thing he ever heard. That night it was about 21 degrees outside, but I sat awake with all three doors to the house open in case he got too cold maybe he would come in. It started to rain I went outside in the rain, freezing, with a flashlight looking for my baby... i have tears in my eyes now just thinking about that precious little baby. A few days go by and I couldnt deal with it anymore. I called my daughter that lives about 46 miles from me, she had a friend that had also found a baby squirrel, I ask her to see if I could buy the little girl. For fifty dollars I was MOMMY again. I went to pick her up, it's crazy, but I was so excited when I got home. Tony was at the front door smiling, waiting to see her. She was about 11 weeks old and so tiny. Well one morning about 3 months later I woke up and she was gone, someone left the door open and she got out. I cried again, so so sad. I went outside everyday hoping to see her. We live on a dirt road in the country so to speak. I cant see my neighbors and there is mostly wooded areas around our home. After about 3 weeks of no sign of a squirrel I said a prayer. Well that evening I walked out behind the house and there were 4 squirrels, 2 of them ran, but 2 stayed. One was Sweet Weet, I could tell by a distinct marking on his fur, and my little girl Sweetie Pie. She tried to climb over a metal pole to get to me but couldn't. Finally she went around it and she hopped to me like a bunny rabbit. I didn't reach out to touch her because I was worried I would frighten her away. She went to a tree and climed up it about 2 feet and let me talk to her a little while, then she went back to the woods. Its been 2 or 3 weeks and I havent seen them again. I want a squirrel so bad I can hardly stand it. I LOVE THEM LITTLE BABIES

In Sept. 2007 I was having quiet time on the porch when I heard a plop and a screech. My cat investigated and was as bewildered as I was over the screeching naked "thing" that dropped out of a tree. The night before I told my girlfriend that there is nothing so satisfying as connecting with nature. I was thinking of a baby fawn. After my husband identified this naked "thing" as a squirrel, I rushed to the drug store and purchased an eye-dropper and fed the baby soy milk mixed with rice crispies. After six weeks, we left the cage open by the tree it fell out of and it returned to it's home nest. Husband said it was male. I disagreed but didn't argue. Every morning and around dusk he comes to the porch for his nuts or popcorn. We keep a water bottle secured to his oak tree. Since we live in a very rural area, we hope to have him around for a good while. Today, to my husband's embarrassment, he discovered our "Rocky-boy" is Mrs. Rockette and is feeding her young. We are hoping she will introduce us to her babies soon. This has been so much fun having Rockette come when we call, scampering up and down our trouser legs to perch on our shoulders. The cat knows she is part of the family and we don't have too many confrontations. Our visitors and grandchildren just love to brag about this crazy old couple that can call the squirrels down from the tree! Susan and David Greensboro, Georgia

I came home one afternoon and my husband said when I walked through the door, "Honey, we have a problem!" I was thinking oh great, what is it now? I was 5 months pregnant, have a 14 year old dog and 2 cats what was this problem? I walked to the bathroom and inside a cardboard box was a baby squirrel. I asked how this happened he said that the crying that we had been hearing for 3-4 days was the baby. The neighbors cat had been trying to get at something and he noticed it was a baby squirrel. The poor thing had been starving and thirsty for love and warmth. We named her peanut and let me tell you she loves oranges and lifts her arm for tummy rubs. I feel as though I now live in a zoo! Men always bring home animals don't they!

Our baby squirrel died having seizures last nite. He was much loved and such a good boy. We know we gave him more time than he would have had to live, but that time was so precious. i'm so grateful that my sons have such gifts with animals in need. Chippy will be much missed but we are better for having loved him during this short time. Vicki

We found Samantha and her sister and brother in a fallen tree at about 3 weeks old. No mother in sight. They were squacking and calling for her. Their eyes weren't open yet so we rescued them. My husband and I had to drive an hour away to Walmart for formula (puppy formula according to sources on the internet) and Pedialyte to rehydrate them. We kept them warm in a fish tank with a heating pad and fed them with a syringe every 3 hours. The other boy and girl didn't make it but Sammy is now about 7 weeks old and full of mischief. We feed her every 4 hours now and she loves to teethe on brocolli and carrots, cheerios and dog food (again, according to what we found on the internet). Her weight is up to over 5 ounces now from 2 when we found her. She is so cute! She loves to cuddle and have her tummy rubbed. She also loves to play with her whiffle ball and little chew ball with the bell in it. Our plan is to release her at about 14 weeks. But, part of me doesn't want her to go! No one else either, my girls love her and even grandma is getting attached. I don't think its legal here in Florida. We keep telling everyone we are just rehabbing so no one will turn us in.

We rescued a baby squirrel from the cat up the street about 3 months ago. I bottle fed her until she could eat on her own. I have contacted a small mammal rehabilitator about releasing her into the wild. The rehabilitator informed me that if she has been with us for several months then she has conformed to us and not wild life. She also told me that they live in groups and if she has not been raised by other squirrels then she will not properly communicate with them and they will kill her. This was a shock, and I decided to keep her safe in our home. She has become quite a comedian and enjoys everyone. I do feel bad that she can't go out and climb trees but it's better safe inside than dead. We have lined her nest with branches and she loves to climb and chew on them and we put her cage out on the porch on good days. Just a 'for your information' for anyone looking to release a squirrel into the wild, try and find a rehabilitator

I don't understand Wildlife officers, they will let hunters and people in city neighborhoods kill these squirrels, but to keep one as a pet, safe and loved, is against the law. I follow one law and that is the law of nature. If I see a sick and injured animal I take care of it. If it is injured to the point it can not be released then why kill it instead of offering it a home. I saved three northern flying squirrels and called a well known animal refuge and they refused to take them, they said they did not specialize in them. Excuse me, they have bear, otters, and others but the flying squirrels weren't good enough for them. Wild life rehabers say let them go, to what be a meal to a cat or dog, or better yet starve and freeze because they did not know how to make a shelter or gather food right. I think that If a human is willing to take it in and care for it well and it lives a life longer than 4 years in the wild due to being a meal for a predator or dying of metabolic bone disease because its diet is poor in calcium (very painful slow paralizing death), more power to the human. The creator put humans here to watch over our animal friends and see to it they survive. I see so many deer and elk killed by careless tourists who are too busy looking ga ga at the scenery than watching out for them. I am on the side of the animal 100%. wiccan animal lover.

A while back my fiance was in the back yard where we share a parking space with a neighbor and noticed the neighbor backing out of the drive, under her car was a small eastern grey approx. 6-8 weeks old. There was no "parent" grey in the area and after the fiance stopped the neighbor the lil thing actually hopped over to him and climbed his leg to his shoulder. He was very thin and "starving" We've had him now for 6 months and named him Patrick since he was probably born around St. Patricks Day. He is very affectionate and loves car rides. He hangs out in my hoodie while I'm running errands, and everyone loves him. He is very curious about everything and likes to test new things with a few nibbles. They can be a real handful at times but if you have a loving heart, time and patience they can be the best little pets IMO. I wouldn't give him up for the world. But if while we're playing outside he wants to run into the forest I would never stop him. We are planning on releasing him once he's older, but a big part of me hopes he'll want to stay with us forever. Time will tell but it will be up to Patrick when the day comes.

TODAY i awoke as i always have , to "Baby Girl and Bubba" just starting to stir. They get up and start looking for food in my hands or in places that they have hidden stuff in. Baby Girl is an 8 month old grey/black mix and Bubba is a jet black 6 months old. My big cat, "Little bear" sleeps with me and the two girls will sneek around him knowing that he is still asleep. Sometimes Baby, will crawl into my chest area and curl up in my hands after she awakes, and fall back asleep. She is jealous of Bubba and chases her away for my affections. The love i have for each of them is familiar and unique like all the testemonies i have been reading on this site, and was lucky i found it. I rent a room and live in Ontario, Canada and after living here since Aug. (where i found Bubba) of this yr. 2006, the landlord called the wildlife officer a week ago. He showed up pounding on my door, said it was illegal to have squirrels. If i didnt sirrender my 2 (kids) over to him today he would charge me and take me to court. My heart was torn from my chest, and still is. It was just 2 days ago, that both of them were getting along and i was moving to a farm so i could keep them better. When i had to put them in their cages and take them away from their nap baskets, they reminded me of a story i once watched on TV of the childrens Aid taking, no ripping 2 young kids away and out of their adopted mother's arms because the natural mother wanted them back. My girls were clinging to the bars upside down, and biting the bars and terrified and sticking their little hands out like a coon would to touch you. I know they were crying, when i stuck my finger in to touch her mouth, she put it in her mouth and held it there but never hurt me. I havent even gotten any photos of them! I had little collars on them that they didnt mind. He called the Bowmenville Zoo, near hear, and they said they would take and put them there as an exibit. I packed their night baskets and my things that were familiar to them and kissed them each on their little whiskers, and said good-buy. What else could i do? My xmas is ruined this yr.

I believe that squirrels, when cared for correctly, make very sweet, curious pets. I have rehabilitated five orphaned squirrels. My first set was a litter of four babies, only two weeks old. I still have two of them who are tame and friendly. I released the other two because they did not enjoy the my company very much, and seemed to like it better outside. I am glad I did this and think that if an animal wishes to be free, it should be set free. My other two returned to me when they were given the option to leave (even after a dog chased one up a tree!) The two I still have now are the best little guys. They have only bonded with me, since I raised them. They are not very fond of anyone else and do not appreciate being held by other people. Neither of them have bitten me in the three years that I have had them. I have had both males and females and the females are definitely more loving and friendly. I love the little critters to death! I handle mine every night to keep them friendly. They always love a little scratch under the neck and stretch their arm back really far. Its very cute to watch.

Yes, Squirrels CAN be pets. Please note: I would never suggest that a person TAKE one from the wild, but if fate drops one in your path, and you and the squirrel are willing to walk a ways together, then enjoy it. Not everyone who finds a squirrel will be able to locate a wildlife rescue organization before the little critter dies from cold and lack of nutrition. Peanut is a 7 week old Western Gray that was brought into our home by one of our cats late at night. We can only guess that he was shoved out of the nest by a sibling, found by the cat, brought into the home, found alive by my middle kid, and then nursed back to health by me. I guess I am lucky to have a degree in Veterninary Assisting, because we were provided with a rather extensive education on emergent situations. I am NOT a vet, and there is only so much I can do. So, I turned to the internet, and found everything I needed to know within a very short time. He has become quite an affectionate little critter, and is a delight to come home to. We are all very fond of him, and I will be acquiring a license to keep him. There is a reason that these creatures come to us, and so long as we are dedicated in their care and happiness, then enjoy your little bit of wildlife, and take many pictures ~*~

Tigersoul 2006-09-08

Squirrels are not pets. They are wild animals, and having raised two orphans I can attest to this. Everywhere in the US that I know of, they are illegal to keep and you need a permit from USF&W to get one. Just a note for people who think getting a squirrel would be "cute."

i have a pet baby grey squirrel, he is about 1 month and a half old, i have bottle-fed him since he was a few weeks old, now he follows me everywhwere and comes when i snap my fingers. whenever he sees me, he comes up to the cage door and begs to play and maybe have a treat, as soon as i open the door, he leaps onto my shoulder and makes a purring noise similar to a cat, he is a super friend!!! :)

I have an eastern gray squirrel that we have had for almost 6 months. She came to us fully furred with only the top or bottom teeth - can't remember now. She couldn't have eaten for days. She and two other squirrels finally fell out of a palm tree after their mother had died in the round 5-7 days prior. I gave her sugar water when I first took her in. She slept for the next 22 hours. This gave me time to research and buy esbilac, karo syrup, electrolyte water and whipping cream. She liked everyone, at first, but now, she only likes myself and my son. She will bite anyone else! We love her and spoil her rotten. She eats everything that she should - avocado, squash, apple, pear, grapes, spinach, brussels, carrots, sweet/potato, snow/snap pea, kiwi, celery, corn, oranges, strawberry, banana and nuts of course! She takes a nap in the middle of the day and sleeps at night. I would not recommend this animal as a pet for everyone, but it has worked out just fine for us. We have a lot of time on our hands!

I am a lineman who accidently destroyed a grey squirrels nest while replacing some lines that had been chewed through.(they do that a lot) I called my wife and had her call a rehab center to find out if the mother would abandon the destroyed nest. They said "she would likely not return to the nest". I put him in my beany hat and brought him home a week ago. A 1 to 2 week old pinky we named "scooter". We called a vet and they said to feed him "kitten formula" So for a week we have been feeding him evedently the wrong food. Some sites say kitten formula will kill them and others say its "not good for them". So today I will get puppy formula and pray the change will not kill him.

My best friend has always had a soft spot for squirrels, so when we found one about 5 weeks old that probally lost his family in a bad storm we decided to keep him and see how it goes in raising him. We named him Nutso. We live in a dorm so he is constantly interacting with other people and receives a ton of attention. He loves to go outside and sit on our shoulders.

My wife and I have "Rocky" an eastern gray. He is an adult picked up off the road with two broken legs, a fractured skull, fracture over his eye socket, broken incisors and several cuts and contusions. It had to be a miracle he recovered. It took several months of intense therapy to get him healthy. He is not a pet, he is our companion and wonderful friend. Rocky contradicts all the horror stories we have read about squirrels not assimilating to human interaction. That written, one may say it was the result of his injuries. Then we got Jesse when he escaped from the talons of a hawk and dropped in the road in front of my car. He had no significant injuries. We introduced him to Rocky. They are best of friends. They are both mature males. They both assimilate with my wife & I and our German shepherd, Red. Our experience is, they are, gentle, kind, loyal, very intellegent and not a mean bone between them over the last 4 years.

I found a nest of 3 babies when the limb their nest was in fell, no hair, eyes closed, on 09/09/05. One female died immediately, most likely from internal injuries, but the other female and male I raised successfully, thanks to the internet and directions I received. Since they are supposed to open their eyes at 5 weeks, I estimated their birth date at 08/25/05... making them 4 months old Christmas Day. I have a nice 4 story cage for them, and turned them loose in my house during the day... and dearly loved them. They were soooo funny... and had their affectionate moments... but they are also VERY curious and into things they shouldn't be. I picked up the phone to make a call and it was dead... they chewed through the wire. Later, they chewed through 2 lamp wires, one while it was on. I heard this ominous snap, crackle, pop, ran in there and the lamp wire was a goner, and the squirrel was furiously rubbing its mouth on the carpet. I finally drug the cage outside, and after letting them get used to outdoors, opened the door. The cage is still by the big oak, and I leave snacks for them. They still come to me, and tolerate my petting them... the female more so than the male, she is much more affectionate and sociable. They sleep in the big oak, and one rainy night she returned to the cage and her warm dry nest, but he roughed it in the tree. I cried and cried when I let them go, and I'm usually out there before daylight waiting on the sun to come up so I can greet them... they brought me a LOT of pleasure and joy... and I fear that something will get them... but they seem a lot happier out there. I did bring the female inside to visit one day, and she enjoyed visiting her old haunts, and crawled in my lap and cuddled for a while, but then she would go back and forth to the door, and as time went on she'd get more frantic... so she was very happy to go back out to her tree. For now, I have to be content with them visiting me often and letting me pet them and feed them snacks. I did fall totally in love with them and would love to do it again. And again.

I just lost my pet squirrel Rocky :( We only had him for a week but his eyes were open and he had all his hair when my friend brought him to me to care for. I along with the kids and my wife fell in love instantly. He was just cutting his top teeth and nursing perfectly, preferred to sleep in my pocket and loved to sleep curled up in a little ball. He was so gentle, loving and left a big hole in our lives when he passed away suddenly just 3 days ago. After all the tears had been shed we held a small private graveside service followed by a song from my daughter. I explained to my kids that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, at 6 and 8 years old they completely understood! Don't take your pet for granted, and give him a little extra squeeze for the Young family!

My name is Gay & I have a male grey squirrel named 'Rocky'. He's my heart. He is a survivor of Katrina. His family were all killed in the storm, his mother & siblings. He was found in Theodore, Alabama. He was only an inch or 2 long & looked like an embryo. His ears opened about a month later & his eyes the next week. I'm Mommy to him & he's a happy member of the family. He's very lovable but loves his independence. I don't keep him caged up. His cage is merely a place of security for him when there are children around or whatever. I could go on & on about my friend Rocky. He's wonderful & I'm so glad he's part of my life......

Today I saved a baby gray squirrel from a cat. When I showed him to my kids we decided to keep him as a pet. I wasn't sure until reading all the wonderful things people have said about them on this website. We have named him Mr. Snuggles and look forward to making many fond memeroies with him.

I have just gotten my first official squirrel about 3 weeks ago. His name is Dizzy. He fell out of a tree and ever since he kind of lost some of his coordination. I figured it would be safer for him not to be out in the wild on his own, for fear of what could happen to him at great heights. He is the most lovable pet I have ever had. When I am home I let him roam and when I call for him, he actually comes running to me, like he knows his name! I am purchasing a squirrel to put with him so he's not lonely. He loves to lay on peoples laps and he rolls over for me to scratch his belly like a dog. Every day seems to be better as far as his balance and coordination. Hopefully my next squirrel will be as loving as Dizzy. Thanks for all the info. Christine and Dizzy

I have a grey squirrel named Sonny. He is hands down the coolest and most interesting pet I have ever had. A woman found him when he was about three weeks old and had no clue what to do with him or how to care for him. She brought him to my work because she had heard that I had cared for one before but the little guy was too injured for me or my vet to help. Long story short , this one is alive and well and is about seven months old. He comes to his name and even has a favorite toy he takes everywhere , a beenie baby kitten. Although he is a wonderfull companion , I would not recommend one as a pet for just anyone

Hi I am still in deep chock. I write this so you may learn from my mistake. I had Lucky, a gray squirrel. He fell out of my 100+ foot tree 3 weeks ago. Had fur. My Doberman rescued him from my Golden and guarded him till I got there. He immediately took to me when I fed him, Tara my Dobie licked him from top to toe, every feeding. He had finally graduated from crawling to jumping happily around. When I was gone I kept him in my bathroom because of my 3 dogs and electrical wires. There he had his house that my husband built for him. Today I forgot to CLOSE THE LID to the toilet. I came home and he was drowned. I can't stop crying as I am at fault for this tragedy. He was soo happy and always played around with me and my dogs. I am so sorry. I truely miss his little face and happy being.

I love my Mr. Bubbles. One day i found 4 of them all attached by the tails. So i brought them in and cleaned them up. Their fur was covered in blood and that is what made all their tails stick together, and you could see the bugs crawling in their fur. But anyways, i brought them in and took care of them. After a week of care and feeding them with great food, i released them. But one of them would not leave. He came to visit me everyday and soon began to come into the house. So i made a cage for him and kept him. He goes outside once a day for 45 min. I call his name and he comes running back. I love him. Better than any hamster i ever had.

I had the great pleasure of having a grey squirrel as a pet and I tell you that I've never loved any animal as much as I did my Buddy Jo. She originally came to us as a baby being chased by a cat and we released her back in to the wild a year later. I tell you doing that broke my heart and I wish I would have kept her. I would love to have another squirrel and will again someday. Squirrels are the most loving pets and mine was with me constantly when I was home. She had free run of the house while we were there but she always made sure she knew where I was. I know people think I'm strange but my heart aches for my Buddy Jo and I will always carry her with me in my memories. I know she loved being back in the wild and we have so many squirrels around us she was not out there alone. I have this empty spot in my heart and always will..... Maggie 9-16-05

HI, My name is lauren and thanks to your website i can now keep my baby squirrel. I have had my baby for a few weeks now and he had fallen out of a palm tree in my neighbors yard. My friend and I were walking just for no apparent reason. She talks way too much, so when she said she saw something fall out of that tree i told her to just keep walking! She said, "No Lauren, really it looks like a baby raccoon". Little does she know it wasnt a raccoon, it was my baby. I felt that day there was no apparent reason that we walked around, but it was for my baby and me to come together. When we found my baby, whos name ended up being rocky, he didnt have alot of fur on him and was shaking and he didnt have his eyes open! And that joyous day that he opened his eyes he finally stopped walking into stuff! Now everyday when i go to school i dont have to think about my parents bringing him somewhere else. Now i know that when i go home he'll be there waiting for me and i'll be waiting for him! I'm so happy i looked at this website, and i'm so happy you made this website! For me and my baby! Thank You so much! You have made my day! Sincerely, Rocky and Lauren

I've named him squirrely squirrel and love him a lot. he is a member of the family now and has free rome of my home when I am here but when I am not he sleeps in a five floor cage I made. I COULDN'T HAVE A NICER FRIEND!

i have a grey squirrel name JAZZY JENKINS. One of the science teachers at my school found her when she was about 5 weeks old and still had her eyes closed. My chemistry teacher told him about me and all my other animals, so she is now mine. she is only about a month and a half old and is so sweet. she is in a big ferret cage right next to my bed and wakes me up every morning at about 5:30 (even on weekends). she doesnt have the run of the house b/c we have dogs. But when shes not in her cage on her "trees" shes on me, and loves my pajama pockets. she will most likely be released in the spring if she isnt too dependant. she is the love of my life. she has stolen the heart of my whole family, including one of my dogs who has adopted her like a puppy. squirrels are great!

I have A squirrel named Muffin. My Dad found him lying on the ground in the woods behind our house and he was barely alive. Right now i am taking care of him trying to do the best job I can even though I never had a squirrel before. He has to be released, but I don't think it will be too soon because he is not the healthiest he could be. But I will make him the healthiest squirrel alive and he will stay alive!

I have a squirrel named Secret and he was rescued by a tree service where they cut down the tree and he was the only one left. So I got him on my birthday, and I have wanted a baby squirrel for a year before I got Secret. I love this squirrel so much, he is the best pet that I could ask for. He's still a baby, but he eats all sorts of nuts and leaves his crumbs all over, but I don't mind- I love him! He also eats mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, carrots, grean beans, water chestnuts, cantalope, grapes, sunflower seeds in the shell along with many other things. He is very protective- if he doesn't know you he doesn't want you to touch him. He climbs all over the couch, loves to make jumps onto things, and he makes claw marks all over me and his dad. We keep him in a bird cage when he's not out, which he has already gotten out of and I found him curled up on a fleece blanket on the couch. He sleeps funny, on his back with all fours in the air with his and his mouth open!! He's the Specialist Squirrel Ever!!!!!

I have a wonderful 4 month old female squirrel named Ms. Suzy. She was rescued out of the cold rain in the woods (on the ground). She is my pet now but is soon to be released. They are wonderful animals but I have a feeling they will live happier lives in the wild.
