I just got a two foot columbian boa. I love her to death and want to get one more.

Steven 2009-10-25

I own a three year old red tail boa named Trina. I love her so much, one year ago she got bitten really badly by a rat all the way down to the flesh. I freaked out crying thinking she was going to die, she didn't eat for seven months. My local pet store owner helped me several times to force feed her and then one day just poof, she was back to her old self again. Now she's huge, loves to be held and spoiled, and she eats on her own again. You can't even notice the scars on her back anymore either and I have totally come to realize just how much I love her and how much a part of my life she has become.

About a year and a half ago I got a little RTB from a guy who was moving. The guy didn't feed him enough and kept him in too small of an enclosure, but my little Boo was still a sweet boy. He is now a spoiled healthy boy who loves going outside and sitting in our apple tree (we just refer to it as "Boo's tree"). He loves resting his head against my neck with his body draped along my arm, getting his chin rubbed, and cuddling up to people's chests. If anyone else holds him though he will touch me with his nose every so many minutes then go back to the person. Before I got him I never thought that a snake could have such an amazing personality! My mom was terrified of snakes until she met Boo, now she tells everyone about him and only calls him Boo Boo. Whenever I tell someone about my little boy they usually say something like "you're crazy!" then they ask how big he will get and when I tell them they ask me if I'm going to get rid of him then. I tell them that I won't get rid of him and that I love him very much and can't imagine my life without my Boo!

I have a Boa that was left in the mail slot of the front door of a building I live in. It was about 14 inches long at the time. It's been 2 1/2 years now. I lost the fear I had of it even though it has bitten me 8 times. It's 5'4", I think it's a female and I love my snake Wanda. She use to be very agressive but now is tame. I think someone was trying to scare me with it and I got suspicious when I got a call from a neighbor telling me that there was something on my door, come to find out it was a snake. The best pet I have ever had.

My husband and I currently own two Ball Pythons (3yrs.)&(8 months) and a Columbian RTB (1yr) and are totally content with their behaviors. Reluctant at first, due to my long standing phobia of snakes, I was quickly proved wrong and fell in love with them. Each snake has a wonderful unique personality and handles very well. Both pythons and the Boa react well to handling and feeding. Many small children have handled all three and never once has either of them showed any signs of aggression or fright. I would honestly recommend these pets to any one interested in a long lasting, easy-to-care for new family member.

Our 4th of july celebration of 2008 was quite a surprise to my entire family, because on that day we became the proud new parents of our lil' columbian RTB We named him Fluffers and he is the most facinating animal I have ever owned (and I have owned a lot of animals)... scared at first handling him, me and my 2 young daughters developed a strong bond with him, in part because he is such a gentle creature. I never imagined that I would love him so, but I do, in fact we have started getting my other family members to show interest in them too. My cousin whom wouldn't even go in the pet store for fear of seeing one now comes to my home just to hold Fluffer. He has really made an impression on everyone he touches. He is a great joy... and an educational experience for my children, one that they may have never known otherwise...

Hi, I have the pleasure of owning a bald python. His name is monty, and I also own a red tail columbia boa constrictor, her name is jade. Me and my girlfriend both love them very much, they are easy to care for and very easy to become attached to. We have had them for about a year now and plan on having them both for many years to come.

I have just bought two columbian RTB's. The one is a normal RTB which is my fiance's, and a pastel RTB which is mine. The normal RTB is very friendly but the pastel is slightly aggressive, but calms down when handled. I am in love with the coloring and the body style of these snakes. They are so beautiful.

My family owns a beautiful RTB, we call him McSnakerson. We love him dearly. He has to be the easiet pet to have. However, when it comes to feeding time he can be very agressive. We feed him in a separate feeding area other than his home. We do this to pevent the possibility of him striking. Funny thing though, one time I moved him into his feeding box and he knew it so I began to get ready to put the rat in. McSnakerson kept striking the cage and as I tried to walk to another side to drop in the rat he had his eye on me and just kept following me. Needless to say I had to get someone else in the room to distract him so I could drop in the rat. McSnakerson is the perfect eater though, always ready and quick to it. He is my first reptile pet and my love for snakes has grown cuz of it. We now own a Ball Python as well. He on the other hand, is another story, but loveable just the same.

I have a 7mo old baby rtb named Manasa, her name stands for queen of all snakes in hindu mathology. I have nothing but good to say about my pet, My family and friends all admire her and have over come fear of snakes. I understand the commitment for the years to come, having helped raise a wonderful rtb. Eve since passed of old age, I always wanted to raise my own boa, and we love her very much. Proud snake owner!

Debbie Cheney 2008-12-11

My son has a red tailed boa. Most of the time she is nice but about a year ago she bit my daughter and today she bit me. Do they go through aggressive times or is it something we've done?

Shawn Vogel 2008-09-28

Hey, I have a 6 1/2 ft true red tail boa constrictor. I have it in a 5 by 3 foot aquarium. I wanted a taruntula inside and just walks all inside the aquarium with the snake inside. Should I let the spider roam within the aquarium? Jose

Jose Casanova 2008-08-09

My rtb, Forbes, is the best snake ever. He will be 3 in July and has never even attempted to bite. I have even needed to clean bedding out of his mouth with no problems from him, and he doesn't mind dogs sniffing at him when he crawls on the floor. He will lay on me for as long as I will rub him - but I can definitely see a difference in his interaction with me as opposed to anyone else. My boy is very spoiled and he loves it. I take him out of the cage nearly every single day, and he goes swimming and takes drives with me in the summer. I will be sad when he is just too big for me to handle alone. We are in the process of having a floor to ceiling enclosure built for him. A lot of people ask how big will he get or how long will he live, and when I tell them, the reaction is usually 'what are you going to do with him then?' I'm going to keep him, of course! These reptiles are a true commitment and should not be a short term novelty to 'show-off'. Before purchasing one, be prepared to handle them regulary for many, many years - intentions otherwise are just not fair to them.

A friend of mine has two red tails. They are about seven months old and are named Monty and Tony. They are quite large for their age but very gentle and friendly. Highly recommended for the beginner.

Kurt van Wyk 2008-04-07

We own many snakes including corns, hogs, and redtails. We also own uromastyx, armadillo lizards and beardies. We love all of our reptiles very much but out most cherished is our rtb Nora. She is about a year old and is the nicest of all our snakes (uros are the nicest lizards=]). Red tails are great for all but keep in mind they do reach sizes up to 12 ft. and MAY be a bit nippy after eating (be sure to wach hands after handeling mice before getting your snake again). One thing, owners who feed their snakes in it's actual tank, take it out and feed it PLEASE! I will make your snake much more tame while trying to retrieve it from the tank. But anyway, we can not wait until Nora is atleast 7 ft! she is so beautiful and loving and we can hold her for hours and she loves it! Hope everyone takes great care of their snakes! <3

Sarah and Dustin Kelly 2008-03-25

I have had a few RTB's. They are very docile and loving snakes that I would recommend to beginners as well as experts. Do note before you buy, they get very big and require alot of attention.

Freddie Picciano 2008-01-14

I have a 10ft female rtb who i got from a person along with a 3ft royal. Since giving them the proper care they have flourishd into tame beauties. I also have a peruvian rtb that was mis-treated. After 3 months she has flourished, but after her past is just now warming up to being handled.

Jonboy 2007-12-25

I have a red tail boa and I have had it since it was born, and it is about 5" long. I have owned a lot of snakes, but this is the most docile and friendly of all snakes that I have owned.

My name is Laura, and i own an Emporer Red Tail. Her name is Layla and she is 6.5 ft long. My boyfriend and i saved her when we first got together. Her previous owner let her get into a pool table. Her owner also never fed her. We have had her for about a year now, and she is doing well and getting better. Her scar is also fading. Even though she wasn't taken care of before, she is a very sweet and docile snake. She loves to be out and tries to get out of her tank before i can close it. She lets us kiss her on the head and she gives us kisses. She likes to breathe in your ear also. She has so much personality and i would definitely say im glad to have her.

Laura 2007-08-28

i am 14 and i have a red tail boa, she is 8ft long and she is really good tempered. She iz probably 40 to 50 pounds, but she is super good around kids and i think im gonna breed her sometime. Plus i have a burmese python and they grew up together, but they go in separate cages.

LUIS 2007-07-03

I have the pleasure of having a Columbian. I named him Hercules. He truly is a master predator. He is a joy and I hope to have him around many more years. He is 15 and roughly 10 ft long. He eats full size rabbits. Since he eats such a large meal, I only feed him once a month. He has a room in our house all to himself and I allow him to run free until feed day then I place him in a converted entertainment center for the feed and digestion process.

Don 2007-06-29

The Columbian Red Tail Boa its the best snake ever, big but not to big and very smart and good hunter ;) i hope you love them too

I rescued a Boa Constrictor Imperator (Emperor of the Boa Constrictors) from a certain death! He now has a huge cage, private bath and neat rock.....he hates heat lamps and temps above 80. His name was Theasius because he was an escape artist, but I renamed him Kilroy...fits his nature.....you know when he's been around! HE IS GOD AWESOME BEAUTIFUL AND HAS BECOME 5'5" IN A YEAR! He was an underfed and under handled snake, now he's an every day explorer and fed once a week. He is my buddy and has head bunted me once when he did not want to go back into his huge home,.but he nipped my oldest son who was ticking him off. Otherwise he is a loving and parrot like Boa. He prefers being on your shoulders, heavy boy too, and loves to watch as I am on my Mac. He likes to rest on my bed and snuggle on my dialysis days, sneaking into the covers and sleeping, acting like my guard dog when I sleep. I am not sure I rescued him or he has rescued me. He is my Emperor Boa and my Family loves him, all 8 of us, from my 1 year old to me. I can't wait till he is 7 feet long.....nor can my wife. He is a goofy rep who loves to sit on your shoulders or lap and be petted. He loves his head and throat stroked...weird huh? Ken Huffman P.S. Kilroy was here!

Rev. Fr. +Ken Huffman 2007-04-14

Monica here. Just wanted to add to the breeding section . . . as with many boas, the red tails have internal incubation, to be vague. The young are born with the placenta intact; each in their own sac. There is no egg laying or incubation required with red tail boas.

Monica 2007-04-13

The info you have on Columbian Red Tail Boas is great. I used to have one but unfortunately i had to give it away because it got way to big for my house.

Shaun Deluca 2007-03-28

Hey, I really like the info on your ted tailed boa. I run a REPTILE RESCUE, and i have rescued two rtb's that people have just abandoned. I have had them for about two years now. They were very, very, very aggresive when i first got them. Unfortunatly my female got sick and there was nothing that i could do for her but have her put down. It broke my heart. But my male is now very gentle and is doing great. But i have recently bought a true pastel colombian boa. I am very pleased with her. She is my baby. Thanks for all the great info on RTB'S. Keep it coming.

I have had snakes for years, my dad got me water snakes when i was four. 11 years later i now have over 30 snakes, most of which are breeding. Red tailed boas are amazing snakes, but as much as people recommend them, you are still better off to start with something a bit smaller, now i aint saying cornsnakes or ball pythons( nothing against them, i breed them), just start off small. Sand is really bad for these guys, and they are generally arboreal.

jesse 2006-10-15

Hey my name's Ashley, and i've had my baby girl since she was three months old. She's now a year and two months, and is four feet long. She is growing like a weed! Her mommy's 11ft and her dad is 8ft so i was told she'd be done around 9ft. I don't care how big she gets because she is the nicest snake in the whole world. I don't think anything could replace my Diamond. She loves children, and goes to Petsmart with me to draw crowds. Anyone whos looking to buy a snake, i strongly recommend this kind of snake. Just make sure you find a breeder. They know their snakes, and they can tell you anything you need to know. Don't settle for any pet-store snake. If you want real quality, go to a breeder. You'll never go back.

JD here I have had my RTB for about 2 years now she is growing at about 2 inches a month and is already 5 feet long she is the nicest snake I have owned. I also have a albino burmesse python he is 9 feet and 30 lbs kind of mean but still love him. I would recommend a RTB to anyone looking for a great snake. Kelly is very tame I love taking her to parties she likes the attention as long as the room is quiet. Anyways thanks for letting me post the comment. JD

JD Foster 2006-07-21

columbian red tails are lovely boas, usually docile and very easy to care for, but the two things i want to add on this care guide There is no mention of thermostats, and also that they to be totally happy they should have a medium to high humidity level.

Ian 2006-07-18

hi. i have and owned over 70 snakes and i am only 16 yrs old. i am known by many of europes best herpetologists. i breed RTB and have breed many sucessful hybrids. many people say that RTBs are not very good as starter snakes or for younger persons, i totally disagree with that. RTB's make excellent starter snakes and are great for younger persons. they rarely bite. i have been breeding since i was 12 and not one of my snakes have bitten me.

shay bennett 2006-06-17

i have 2 rtb, im only 15 ive had them since i was 12. they are very, nice never bit me once. they are like brothers, they cuddle together an stuff. so anybody that thinks your kid shouldnt have a snake is wrong cuz these snakes are nicer then dogs an cats, just wash your hands after touching the mice!!

chris kosmicki 2006-05-01

I have only had my RTB for about 6 months. I have owned other snakes in the past and the RTB by far is the best type that I have owned. He is so sweet and docile that he makes it easy to care for him. I also made the switch from live to f/t with no problem at all. I look forward to having more in the future.

Mandee 2006-04-29

i consider my red tail to be one of my kids seeing her go from 12 inches her 5 foot length right now. she has been with me through 3 girlfreinds and has never done me, wrong she is the only girl i trust

Justin 2006-04-26

Hey, james here. i love red tail boas. i've had mine for almost a year now and he's very gentle and some what lazy..haha. he's a great friend. these snakes should be treated with the most respect and deserve it too. great pets they are thank you, james

James 2006-02-23

I have to agree that a hot rock is not a good thing to have in your cage. A mat heater under the tank and a ceramic heater above, and black lights will be much better. My red tail is about 6mo. old 30" long and is a fantastic snake. no bites yet, eats very good, I just switched over to pre-killed with no problem.

Jim Blomberg 2006-01-29

i just thought i would let you know, I NEVER recomended to use a hot rock in a tank with a snake, the tempiture is un-even and can get to hot and burn you snake.

We just got a beautiful C.R.T Boa for my son's 13th birthday! The snake is beautiful and seems to have a wonderful personality. Very sweet! Nice to handle. Beautiful colors too! Dee

Dee Morva 2006-01-05

Our Red-tail Boa, Big Louie, is almost 3 years old. He's always been a great eater, easy to handle and easy to care for. He's a beautiful and enjoyable pet. He's never struck at us, and has always been a very mellow pet. I've always thought if he was a dog, he'd be a Basset Hound. Happy to sleep for days in the same spot. He will go for a hole if given the chance though. He lived in our couch for a month, we thought he'd been stolen until I felt the couch move under me. He's been a lot of fun for us, and he gets along with our dogs just fine.
