Number of comments: 105I got a Chinchilla just yesterday. I decided to name him Romeo for his boyish yet cute personality. He is very cute, and he is already starting to get used to my scent. He likes to run when its play time at 8:00, he jumps over pillows and climbs stairs all for fun! Last night he kept climbing up me and putting his nose right on my lips as if he were kissing me! Sometimes I just can't resist to take him out durring the day. Sometimes he is tired and just lets you hold him, or sometimes he wakes up and gets going! I think Chinchillas are great animals, although they require lots of attention and care, I would suggest them to a family that is mature and responsible enough to research them, and take good care of them.
Xoxo, Meg :)
Meg 2009-04-20I just received three male Chinchillas! I have been wanting one for quite a while and I stumbled upon a classified for not one, not two, but three! One is Gray, one is Beige, and one is White. They are the cutest and softest pet I have ever owned! Thank you for all the great information on your website.
jay 2009-03-14I love my pet chinchilla I bought her at a pet store. I had 3 but my niece who is 4 yr. old fell in love with one of them who was a pair so I couldn't split them up. The only problem I have found is keeping my hands off of it. Its so Soft! She is 2 yrs. old now and a bundle of fat softness! I got her an exercise ball. It's better than a hamster... or a bunny and the poop is small and odorless. However her pee is not... LOL. I highly recommend Chinchillas!
Desiray 2009-01-23Chinchillas are the furiest, and the cutest pet you could ever have! But if you are planning on getting a chinchilla then I would suggest you do your homework on them because even though they are really cute animals they need a lot of things to stay happy and healthy! Also they come in many colors! My personal favorites are the wilson white, black velvet, and beige. And they are very energetic little animals! But they are naturally asleep in the daytime so if you are going to play and have fun with them, make sure you play with them at least near nightime when they are awake. They are truly fascinating animals!
logan 2009-01-01How do you tell how old a chinchilla is when you buy them from a pet shop?
renae 2008-12-25Chinchillas are very sweet animals and do a lot of cute things for our children. They keep the kids long and happy with whatever they do. I have had a chinchilla now for 3 yrs. and it is just a doll! If you get one you better take good care of it now and be careful with the same gender together for a long period of time. Take care and have a great year!
Lila Mistalern 2008-12-04Is a 55 degree basement warm enough for baby chinchillas? What is the temperature range? I know they do not like the heat above 80, or after reading some of the comments, above 75! The basement is a constant temperature, so we thought this the best place for them.
R.y 2008-11-02I have been admiring and wanting a chinchilla so bad, and finally I got one. I got Miss Lily May a few weeks ago and I love her very much! The only question i have is Why does she always poop when we have her out playing, and does anyone else have the same problem? She always goes bathroom all over us... its easy to clean up but its kinda imbarrasing when my friends and family hold her. She is a joyful little critter though. She also LOVES playing with my beagle. Im just hoping shell gain my trust and vice versa so i can let her run freely as long as she comes back on cue.
Rickie Taylor 2008-09-23My girlfriend has had a chunchilla for two almost three years and he (his name is Boe) has recently developed a habit of barking at me whenever I get near his cage. When my girlfriend and I first started seeing each other he was fine with my presense. I built him a much larger cage than what he had and we take care of him as we always have. It has only been in the past three weeks he has developed this aggression! He doesn't try to bite or atack me, but he does bark and lundge at me as though I were a predator. I wonder what could be the cause of this attitude change. Could it be that he is in rutt, like a buck coming into his own or does he simply not like me anymore, and if so what might I do to bond with him. It's not like I can throw the football with him! One more thing, he won't even accept food from me any longer! Please, anyone that has had a similar experience,... Thanks so much! Chris
chris 2008-06-19I ended up getting a Chinchilla to replace the annoying gerbils I had. When I moved to Seattle I couldn't take my dog with me so I got very depressed =(. I bought my first chinchilla and named her Miimii, the little chinchilla at the pet store that everyone was very mean to. Then we added Baby, a little albino Chinchilla, and last but not least we added Prince Yuki. They ended up breeding and I didn't know that both my females were pregnant. Well all and be hold, they had little baby chinchillas. It was a very exciting day for me. All my Chinchillas have very different personalities, but that's why I love them all. Miimii has trust issues with people because everyone would poke her in the butt at the petstore so she was very mean when I got her. Now she's the first one to the door when I go to feed in the morning. Baby is the trouble maker, and I think she passed it on to her baby, he likes to get out all the time. And last but not least, there is the proud father Prince Yuki. He loves to cuddle and go for car rides. I take him in to stores with me all the time and everyone is like wow what is that, he really loves the attention. If anyone is interested in getting a baby Chinchilla, please email me at ohime_kaoru151@hotmail.com
Jennifer 2008-06-17I have two chinchillas. I got them as 3-month old's and they have been great since. As youngsters they loved to sleep in a warm, cosy place but as they grow older they only sleep at night. They are both very cute and energetic. Some nights I let them run around on the couch to let loose, but it doesn't really work. The most important thing is a sleeping box which is ideal for sleeping.
john 2008-05-23It should be noted that exercise balls are a definite 'do not' in terms of toys for chinchillas. The temperature inside of them can reach 15 degrees greater than the ambient temperature of a room. Mesh wheels (or mesh anything) are also something to be avoided as there's a staggering record of chinchillas breaking limbs, and toes on them.
Heather 2008-04-16I have two chinchillas. I love them very much and feed them everyday. The only thing I don't like about them is that I'm constantly cleaning up after them. I do admit they really are lovely creatures and I am glad we bought them though I'm not sure if I will or will not have anymore after these.
desiree 2008-02-05We have 3 chinchillas Oreo, Smokey, and Taz. They are like part of the family. When my boyfriend comes home from work instead of kissing me hello first, he runs in and gives the boys a kiss and hello first. It's amazing how much fun they are. Taz is the one we saved from the pet store that no one wanted. He was the third addition to our family. The funny thing is that each one is so different from each other with their own personalities and corks. Oreo is cuddly and wants love all the time, Smokey is the trouble maker and loves to get the other two going, and Taz would rather be alone and do his own thing until Smokey comes around starting trouble.
Judy 2008-02-04I just got a chinchilla six months ago, he is so cute!! His name is Twinkie and he is brown. He is so sweet and loves to be around me at all times. He is like a dog, he has to be everywhere where I am when he is out running around. When I clean his cage out he hops onto my shoulder and just watches me. Then when I'm done he will come nose to nose with me and just nibble and lick my nose. It's like he is saying thank you! I wouldn't trade him for any other animal!
vanessa 2008-02-01I have two chinchillas, a male and a female. Pearl is the white one and dusty is the gray! They are just adorable!
S.D. 2008-01-23My chin is a sassy chin to my family and friends. 9\(ju"][;pkk) (my chin wrote that)
Gabriel 2008-01-08I have had my chin, called Mr.Chubbs, for 3 years now. He is just awesome. He likes all my other small animals exept my male Degus. I think everyone should know that you should not feed your chin any nuts (peanuts, sunflower seeds, etc), since the chins digestion is not made strong enough for it. They will have diarea! Other than that chins are easy to care for. Oh yeay, careful with the loud noises and music, since chins are sensitive to vibrations. Take care of your chins and they will show you love! Frank
Francis 2008-01-07We had a chincilla named Tilly for close to 9 yrs now. We had everything for her, she was so sweet, but just 2 days ago my grandson was out here and wanted to put her in her ball. I said just hold her, but no he had to put her in the ball. Well we had a freak accident because also my 2 yr old granddaughter was helping her ball go, which she didn't need help as she can make the ball go on her own, right? Well, my son notice what he thought was blood and yes it was! We took her to the vet, which I knew would do no good as no vets around here take care of these kinds of animals. She had a cut on her belly. He said she had cut or torn herself open and her little insides were showing. The vet said he couldn't do anything. Too bad vets don't learn just a few more animals huh? So be very careful around young children because they don't know how to handle same animals. We miss her so..
Hopper 2008-01-06I just had a chin pass away, no signs of anything and he was as happy as could be. I woke up one night and found him laying in his cage and he wasn't moving. I thought he was sleeping so I left him alone. About an hour later I heard him bark real loud and I go to the cage and he is laying there in a seizure. So I pull him out and hold him and called the vet. No vets around me do exotic animals but one, and he was out of town for Xmas. Needless to say, he made it until 7 in the morning and then passed. I was so sad about it, and still am when I look at his cage. So I went and bought a large male around 2lbs and a female from JTChins. He's 10 months old and both are standard grey. I hope to start breeding as a small hobby. I've done nothing but read and learn more about these loving creatures. I have a Mosiac due on Jan 19th, so I'm excited. I think they are better than a dog, cat, or anything that I have ever owned. They are just so loving. I have never had a bad experience with them since I've owned them except the death of the first one. Other than that i would tell anyone to buy 1. Welp, bye bye.

Joe Webb 2007-12-28I have three at home. They are called India, Jaki, and Noha. I love them.
Taron Redding 2007-12-11I have a chinchilla named Minchi and he is well behaved.
G.J. 2007-12-09I have a chinchilla at home, her name is muffin. She's so cute.
eden 2007-12-05Chinchillas are so cool! I used to have one, her name was chicky. We all loved her. She always cuddled up with me when I was sad,or something. Chinchillas are my favorite wild animals. Some even live in high mountins. At school I am doing a book report on wolfs. At home I do reserch on chinchillas. Well gotta go, by.
Rebekah 2007-12-01Chinchilla's make good and playful pets. I have three at home and I named them Noha, Jaki, and a girl whose name is India. They all are like my very own kids. Taking care of them is a peace of cake, no problem. That's why I have three Chinchilla's. CHINCHILLA'S RULE!
Taron Redding 2007-11-27I have 2 chinchillas, Piper (female) and Chester (male). The two are lovers and they love being with each other so much. Chester is more loving towards people and will let you pet him through the cage bars, but Piper is more shy and runs before you even say "Hello". Sometimes Chester will sit in his PVC pipe and just bark for no reason at all. I think that the chinchillas are the best pets I've had thus far!
Angelina 2007-11-12I have two girl chinchilla's named Emmy and Izzy. they are very loving and they are fluffy and cute. chinchilla's make great pets.
Ethan 2007-11-07i have a chinchilla named Squanto, but he doesnt really like me. he always barks at me and stuff even though i am really nice to him. i am considering getting another male, although he is very soft and cute!
bog 2007-08-31Last month we were on the blist of a heat wave, here in Rochester New York even. We kept the Chinnies indoors for the duration. It was so hot they just layed in the bottom of their cage for most the duration. Something above changed and the weather began to improve. First, a few days of light to moderate rain, temperature decreased to the 70's, and the humidity was down to the 50 percentile. That was just fine for all of us, including the chinnies. The weather was partly cloudy at early hour in the upper 60's, I set them outside in the shaded area. Two hours later it wasn't so shaded but the temperature was still only 74. At that time I noticed two of the furballs real excited about something and I assumed it was they were just trying to get out of the cage. I again observed the temperature was at 75 degrees F. I monitor the temp with a calibrated thermo-couple to +/- 1 degree F tolerance. 20 minutes later My wife and daughter were in agony. They found all 4 chinnies past out, one was also due in the next weeks. The outside temperature was about 78 degrees. So we thought it was something unexplainable. We took them to the animal hopspital only to find that we would need a biopsy. Well the end result was they all died but one. The mother, with young, sadly didn't make it. These little charmers have been the dearest little pets. Yes they can bite from time to time but never serious. All but one was lost. After calling around, we learned from a rancher, original rancher where they were bought from, that ultraviolet radiation did the trick. Even the animal hospital was unaware of ultraviolet radiation. Every living life form has its means to control body heat, as perfect as these critters may seem, they have one strong set back, heat stroke:
The symptoms (human) of heatstroke include:
Fever (temperature above 104°F)
Irrational behavior
Extreme confusion
Dry, hot, and red skin
Rapid, shallow breathing
Rapid, weak pulse
Seizures
Unconsciousness
* Man or animal, "heatstrokle is heatstroke" and the symptoms are not enjoyed. Heatstroke is beyond a Chinchilla's imagination.
These critters by virtue of their natural habitat have no need for heat control. They come from the high Andes Mountains. Seldom is there a day above 75 there. Especially when Ultraviolet Radiation is exceptionally high they have the natural reaction to get out of the rays and retreat into their dwellings or behind rocks.
I recently was told about an individual who drove with many in the vehicle. The vehicle was comforted with airconditioning, however, the sun was emitting intense radiation. Needless to say, the drive was a sad one, all perished in transport.
Need I say more. We were hurt. How many others procure pets and think home is the ideal place. How many have had their circumstances as such with out an understanding. We have books and such and no where is there comment of ultraviolet radiation. Consider the microwave oven, radio waves, where everyhting is unsuspecting, until all the molecules within you get so excited they literally cook at such an exceleration rate until you literally pop.
Do you need pictures...
Please don't let this happen to you or your pets. Consider the dog or children in the car?
Enough said, I am glad I was able to put this out for others.
Love your pets...they will love you back.
K Noack 2007-07-23is it difficult to breed chinchilas since they are aggressive twards each other
Justin 2007-07-22Hi my name is Cote and Im entering my first year of High School. For my 14th birthday I was lucky enough to receive an 8 week old Standard gray male Chinchilla! I love him so much, I have had him for about 4 days now and already we are forming a bond. I basically love everything about him except a couple of things. 1. We had to move his cage out of my room because of how loud he was at night, 2. he poops alot, and 3. he constantly runs under my bed when I let him out of his cage and it takes an hour to get him out! But besides those things he is lovable, smart, and fun to play with! I completely agree though that children 11 and under really shouldnt have a chinchilla as a pet because they dont like to be squeezed, or even cuddled that much, and they are alot more responsibility to care for than your average hamster or gerbil. I love my chinchilla and I wouldnt give him up for the world! I cant wait to get a leash/harness for him so I can take him outside!
Cote DeRota 2007-07-20I have recently adopted a pet chinchilla and adore him dearly. He has free play time out of his large cage as well as plays around with my small and medium sized dogs. Did not take him long to accept my person, we were best friends the night I adopted him. Needless to say I adore this little guy so much I am on my way to adopting 3 more in which to hopefully expand my collection from this point forth. Chinchi does not appreciate hamsters, however accepts guinea pigs well. He is mixed between a black velvet and grey but utterly beautiful especially his child size personality. It is hilarious when he knows he has done something wrong, mom chases him through the house as he runs and jumps around trying to get away. He seems to be utterly intelligent pertaining to the word NO, he listens and sometimes feels daring to continue his misbehaving antics, which I presume is done purposely in order to receive more attention. Such as a big show off. He is at the age of two and a half years young.
debbie 2007-07-06i love my little furball so much. he is a grey chinchilla and i would give my life for him. we didnt know we could take him outside till i came to the site. we have a leash and harness so were going to try on a day it isnt so hot out.
Carolyn 2007-06-08We have had chinchillas since before i was born, and apparently they don't breed a lot, but my family has had loads and loads. so many i can't count.
rochelle 2007-05-21I have a Chinchilla, Angle is one of the best pets I ever had. I have had her for about two or three years and I always want them. When I first got her home, she got to meet everyone in the household. But she picked me out, and she did not want to leave me alone. When every I pick her up she always goes to my shoulder, like she did from the day I got her. I think that they are a good pet. Everyone I tell about them either wants one or has had one. I think that everyone should give them a chance.
Ivory Sullivan 2007-05-09chinchillas make great pets and are so cute!
Maggie 2007-04-18Chinchillas are the sweetest animals! However they are not for everyone. Chins are gennerally not "cuddle pets" that want to sit on youre lap, they are however sweet and bond well with their owner. Chinnies are, however, not the best pets for every one. They have strict dietary requirments and need large cages of at least 2x2x2 feet, 2x2x3 is better. They need fresh chincilla pellets with NO treats mixed in, and fresh timothy hay, every day. If the food has treats in it, the chinchilla will push the pellets out and only eat the treats. They should get no more then 2 raisins a day, or a small amount of dried rose hips, cranberrys, or apple. Chins need out of cage exercise every day, unless the cage is at least 2x4x4 feet, and even then they need exercise at least 3 times a week. Chinchillas are less then ideal pets for young (or under 9) or irresponsible children, however their are exeptions. Chinnies tend to nip at fingers to test how tasty they are, which some times frightens young children. When buying keep in mind that chins live 10-20 years if well cared for. Also keep in mind they are delicate, so dont grab them.
Ozzysmom 2007-04-14My Chinchilla, Boris, died a couple of days ago after giving us 10 years of joy as he jumped around in his cage. Boris loved tickles under his chin, dried fruit and running around the bathtub! Chinchillas are VERY loving once they get top know you, Boris would always climb up the inside of his cage to come and say hello (they LOVE lots of attention!). Like most gnawing animals, Chinchillas can have problems with their teeth wearing down properly, Boris won a battle with a spur he had on a back tooth 6 months ago.
We will miss Boris so much and he was so cute that we have decided to get him mounted on his favourite log!
Natalie and Tony 2007-04-04i have two chinchillas, Baby & Fiona. they are both girls. Chinchillas are not only the cutest, softest animals on the planet, they are also the most fun animals to have, and they will ALWAYS LOVE you. my chinchillas are the cutest ones! ~heidi~
Heidi 2007-03-06Chinchillas are quite possibly the cutest animals on the planet; not just in appearance, but in mannerisms as well! Potential chin-parents, beware! They're addictive, and contageious!... I bought my first chin (Mercrius) seven years ago, and since then, have "accumulated" three more (Candice, Brody, and Freya). They are affectionate, quirky little creatures, and are perfect for homes that lack in excessive space. A bathroom is an idea play-place (but they will likely chew up your floor-boards!), and they need only enough space for a large cage. They're more effort to care for than a cat, and perhaps a little less than a dog, and will likely provide you with 14-20 years of companionship. Please keep in mind that these pets are /not/ suitable for children, as they are fragile and do not like to be squeezed (Perhaps a gerbil or a rabbit would be better, if you're looking for a pet for your children).
Carly, Merc, Candy, Brody, Freya 2007-02-11i love my 2 chinchillas so much. coda i got when he was just a baby, about 6 weeks old about and he was from a zoo. I have a girl chinchilla named bell as well. i got her from the pet store. she was 3 years old when i bought her, now she still is 3. coda is 4 i think. but they will not mate. i would like to make some money on the babys.
breeanna 2006-12-25Chinchillas are wonderful pets, if you know enough about them. They are not easy animals to keep, and if they aren't properly cared for, could easily rack up vet bills exceeding $500.00. They are exotic animals, and will require an exotics vet, not just a normal bunny vet. Chinchillas are unlike any other animal, and if you think you can just feed them bunny food and treat them like a bunny, your wrong. They have very sensitive digestive tracts, and with a chilla, less is more. They need QUALITY pet food, Oxbow, and Mazuri are recommended, they also need the opposite type hay. Mazuri is an alfalfa based pellet, and there for, a quality timothy hay is necessary. Chinchillas need safe woods to chew on. A list of safe woods can be found on many websites. Woods that are NOT treated are necessary. Chinchillas LOVE apple twigs. My 2 chinchillas love apple twigs more than treats! Treats should be few and far between, as sugar is NOT good for chinchillas. They make excellent pets, but you as an owner need to be responsible enough to read and know about these wonderful creatures. Females can spray urine, and they have dead on accuracy, but it is not a NORMAL action. Chinchillas are not cuddley, and if your lucky enough to get one that cuddles like a bunny, cherish it, because you don't usually. They're just too curious to want to sit and be held.
Tami 2006-11-02I love my chinchillas. Peanut is a black velvet and Cheeto is a white mosaic. They are both female and get along like best friends. The best part of having them is watching them interact with each other. You haven't seen anything until you've seen two chinchillas playing tug-of-war with a paper towel tube. They are so spoiled and know they are the queens of the house. If you want a pet with a personality... chinchillas are the way to go. Mine will hold a grudge against you if you ignore them. They will soak up all the attention you want to give. The bigger the cage you have, the more fun they will have chasing each other around it and goofing off. Ferretrail makes a large ferret kingdom that is like 6-7 levels and is great for chinchillas.
Alandiel 2006-10-31Chinchillas are so adorable! They are the best pets i have ever had! My 2 chinchillas had 2 more and they are the cutest animals. I hate that people that kill them to make jackets of fur, that is so mean! well i love them!!
aimee 2006-08-22i absolutely love my chinchilla. her name is Chica and she is 1 year old. I never thought they could have so much personality but she does. She is easy to maintain and loves to play. she also loves being scratched under the chin, on the shoulder and head and just about anywhere. she does hate my cat and tried to bite her. I love CHINCHILLAS!!!
Annelise 2006-08-16I'm getting a Male chinchilla and your site reasured me that a chinchilla is the right pet for me! I am getting a male because I read in one of the chinchilla sites that females may squirt urine on you for the first couple of weeks so I'll stick with males!
Chinchilla Crazy 2006-07-22i had two chinchillas. their names were starsky and hutch. a few days ago, hutch got lost under our playhouse. we finally got him out 2 days ago. he lost a lot of weight but other than that he looked fine. he died last night. i am thinking about getting another one to keep starsky company but im not sure if its a good idea.
ashlee 2006-06-05
I have a chinchila his names Julian, I had him for almost 5 months. I love chinchillas so much they are awesome!!
Jenna 2006-05-11i love chinchillas, they are awesome pets. great for children to take care of and easy to take care of. i have one so i sorta know and they are very interesting pets and different pets. Now since i have one, all of my friends want one so bad!
I have been around chinchillas since i was 3 years old. they are awesome. I also hope you enjoy animals including chinchillas, i suggest before you get one read about them. But for me as i was getting older i started to read alot about them. When i was little i just began to fall in love with them. So if you want to learn more about chinchillas read about them and get one of your own!
Rachel 2006-05-05 hello. i am getting a chinchilla in a week. in all the pictures i've seen they have been so cute. i learned a lot from your site, thank you. i love double c's
princess 2006-04-20I have a male chinchilla named Guvava and he is the cutest little thing. We brought him home last year from a pet shop when he was 8 months old. At first the poor little thing was so scared of everything he just dashed for his purple igloo every time someone just approached the cage. I worked with him every day and now he is the total opposite of what he used to be now when people walk by the cage he hops onto his perch and pokes his nose through the bars of his cage to investigate. If you get close to the cage he'll show off for you by bouncing off the walls of his cage all while he makes these little muttering noises just so he cane be let out or scratched on his fuzzy little head. :)
jessica 2006-03-22i love Chinchilas! i have one and his name is Fella. YAY! We have soo UBER MUCH FUN together! he is my little Captain Fella Bo Bella
LiNdSaY!!! 2006-02-16I have had my Chin for almost a year now and I LOVE HIM! Sometimes he loves being held and other times he would rather be left alone. I spoil him and buy him every Chinny thing I can. He has never bit me. I would love if he could cuddle more, but as I understand, they don't always like to do so. Its so hard not to give him lots of treats because mine will beg and beg for some, but I know they are not good for him so he just gets a few a day. I recommend a Chin for someone who is patient and has no small children as Chins need their rest in the daylight. Mine stays in my room because I am nocturnal as my Chin. Lets save the Chins from being coats!
Lisa 2006-01-23i use to have two chinchillas although the female died due to severe constipation caused by her giving birth too much. If you want to keep a female and a male, you must consider if you want them to mate or not, because once they start they won't stop! I only knew the first time, the other 3 times were surprises, basically you can't see whether they are pregnant or not.
Another tip is, when the female has babies, be careful when you are putting food in, the female may take it as a hostile move towards her babies and squirt urine at you, and don't think she'll miss, cause they have deadly accuracy! It also smells extremely bad so be extra careful when feeding them.
Chinchillas are actually quite safe to keep, if handled properly, they won't bite you at all as they are quite docile although you should be aware that baby chinchillas will bite quite hard as they are unsure of whether your hand is food or not.
Sometimes if you can close off an area, you can let your chinchilla out for a while, but make sure there isn't an small space where the chinchilla can go into and make it difficult for you to retrieve it.
Occasionally you can feed them grapes and small (very small) pieces and oranges, they also like apples, but sometimes if they are like my chinchillas for example, they may have favorites as in my female (I miss her so much!) she prefered red grapes while my male preferred green grapes. How absurd is that?!?
Jessica C. 2006-01-17i have a pet chinchilla and he's very tame and cute. anyone who doesn't like these must be mad. they are nice pets and need a loving home, so give them one.
jessica 2005-12-24You should always hold a chinchilla close to your chest for their safety.
cody 2005-12-08Chinchillas are WONDERFULL pets. they are so enjoyable to be around. they are shy at sometimes but others they are so good! Dont let them outside because they like being in closers. rabbit cages are NOT good for this animal, they get sick from chewing on the plastic.
emily r 2005-12-04HI. I think having a chinchilla as a pet is a good idea for someone like myself. I have 2 jobs and I'm gone all day. Now because they are nocturnal i don't bother them when they are sleeping and we can play when I get home. I own 4, 2 females and 2 males. I have had them for 9 months now and the males have bonded more to me then the females, they are a bit more shy. They fight over their dust bath to see who gets in first it's quite commical. They know my voice and run to the cage door when I come home. They know that they get treats when I get home. They are the smartest rodents I have ever owned, and I have had alot. I haven't had babies yet, and I don't really care if I do or not.I found a build your own chinchilla cage on a site called chin bin. What an ausome site it gave me perfect directions to make my huge cage. It's 4'2.5'5' with 3 different levels for them to run and jump everywhere, and boy do they ever. Sometimes they wake me up and night while playing. Buying a chinchilla would be a great idea as long as your ready for the long haul, they live quite a long time.
Naomi 2005-10-24I've only got one chinchilla, Napoleon, and he does fine on his own. I bought him because he was very anti social at the pet store where I worked, and no one else wanted him. Now he's wonderfully interactive, very friendly, and gets along with my cats. I had worried about getting only one, but he didn't like other chinchillas. My point is that chinchillas are fine pets on their own, as long as you can spend lots of time with them. Napoleon is good on his own, and is very social now, it just took some TLC. And I wouldn't have him any other way.
Jean 2005-10-14We have 5 chinchillas (three of which were an accident) We had what we thought were two male chinchillas which PetSmart sold to us as males. (Chochee and CheeChee) but then cheechee got pregnant and now we have 3 little babies who are cuter every day. (Monnie, Jay Boy, and Fonzie (I named that one)) The do take some care but they are very very worth the fun. The only thing is that they are active at night so they tumble around and play in the wheels and stuff. If you're thinking about getting a chinchilla, i suggest you get at least 2. Also, we use a 2 level ferrett cage that works beautifully. (Just be careful if you have baby chins cause they can squeeze out of the bars..trust me on this)
Magwa 2005-10-06Che-Che is the best little guy, I bought him from a breeder in Ohio, 3hours there and 3 hours back. it was all worth it to see his cute little face everyday. I've had him for 1 year now and he just keeps getting better and better. when he runs around the house I yell "No Che-Che" and he really listens. fur biting just a little but sometimes it will take a really long time for them to fully get used to everything. nothing beats this pet!
Rachel 2005-10-05I have six Chinchillas. They are such amazing animals and I love them to pieces. When we were married I got an artist to draw pictures of my husabnd, me and my six chinchillas on our wedding invites. I love them so much.
Marney Thomspson 2005-08-18I have only had my chinchillas for a few months, and already I'm hooked. It took me a really long time to learn the basic care, but it was worth it. I find they are quite lovable and bond extremely well to one person. Though many say they dislike cuddling, I find my one LOVES when I hold him belly up on my lap. It depends on the animal, as with all things. I would recommend getting a pair, but for those who cannot afford to pay extreme amounts of money for the one you really want, I wouldn't settle for any old chinchilla just to have a companion. It took about a week to introduce my two boys (not neutered). and now I cannont seperate them, and I would not have changed anything I did. Another tip is bring someone who knows a lot about them when purchasing. My first chinchilla i paid way too much for, but again, I don't regret it, because he's mommies little angel!
jessica 2005-08-10Chinchillas can be amazing pets but only if you can give them the time and effort they need. Chinchillas are nocturnal animals so they're great for students and those employed. If you are considering buying a chinchilla realize that they can't have short small rabbit cage or glass aquariums as they need room to run and jump. I would suggest an all wire ferret cage with two or more levels with a pull-out tray lined with newspaper. The base wires should be no more than 1/2" by 1/2" apart or they might break a leg. They need a hidey box, wood works well but not cedar or pine. These can be bought at many pet stores. Feed them chinchilla pellets without treats, as they will throw the pellets out and eat the treats, in a heavy ceramic bowl. They also like wheels but make sure it is at least 15" in diameter or it's too small. They need dust baths which I give to mine the same time I clean the cage, usually 2-3 times a week. When you play with them let them come to you then "scoop" them up supporting the bottom. Be aware they aren't always cuddly and may just want to sit on your shoulder. I would recommend them to anyone as they are very loving but remember, the cheapest they usually come is $80-100 for the greys and as much as $600 for the blacks.
Jordan 2005-08-05hello. i have seven chinchillas and all have there own little foibles. i wouid not part with them for any one or anything. they are perfect pets for all people.
rhona 2005-07-29I have had my chinchilla, Lola, for two years now, and she is the greatest pet I have ever had. She is very social and enjoys being around the family when she wakes up in the evenings. I wish now that I had done a bit more research before I got her- I think it would have been best if I had gotten her a companion from the same farm. It seems that it would be too hard now to introduce her to another chinchilla. I hope anyone looking to get one will consider getting a pair!
LINDSEY 2005-07-20i am 13 and got my first chinchillia not long after my birthday. I had him for almost 9 months, his name was Dingo he was so cute! sadly he died after not feeling well for a day. I did everything the vet said to but i couldnt save him. I recommend them to anyone who loves animals. If you get one just be carful and pay attention to the temperature because they can get heat stroke just like mine did. i hope i have convinced some of you reading this to get one because they are great pets and have a lot of love for an owner that is nice to them.
Morgan 2005-07-16Hello. I have enjoyed looking at the pictures you have of chinchillas. Chinchillas make wonderful pets. Rabbit cages are really not suitable for chinchillas, as chinchillas need enough height to climb and jump. An appropriate chinchilla cages should have at least 2 levels (more are desirable) so that the chinchilla may jump from level to level. Store purchased cages are generally not suitable for chinchillas as they are usually too small, too short, and made of plastic. Chinchillas like to chew and will chew up plastic shelves, plastic clamps, etc ... which will not only destroy your cage, but will also make your chinchilla sick. The best thing to do is to make your own chinchilla cage; you just have to make sure that all wood used to create a cage is untreated by chemicals and pesticides. Chinchillas will also chew wood, so the majority of the cage should be constructed from wire. Wire mesh cage bottoms are not acceptable for chinchillas. A chinchilla can catch a toe or toenail in the wire bottoms and end up with a broken leg. Cage bottoms should be covered with some kind of soft bedding. Aspen shavings or CareFresh bedding are the most appropriate choices. Pine can be used, but only if it's kiln dried, so as to remove the aromatic oils. If your cage only has 2 levels, your chin will need lots of exercise; an exercise wheel is a good choice, but only if it is of solid construction. Again, an open mesh wheel can catch the toes or toenails of a chinchilla, causing broken limbs. I would encourage anyone interested in owning a chinchilla or anyone who already has a chinchilla to do more research on the proper care of these unique animals. Also, if you are in the market for a chinchilla, please consider a chinchilla rescue before purchasing one from a pet store. Many animal shelters have abandoned chinchillas available for adoption.
Susan 2005-07-15They are adorable. I can't have pets where I live. If I could then I would probably get one. I have debated this possibility before.
Sheila 2005-07-09i got a chinchilla about 3 months ago! his name is Jimmy and he is the sweetest little thing! my friend had a chinchilla and that's what inspired me to get one! they have such personality and are so loving. i can let him hop around my room and he is so curious and cute. if your considering getting a small animal i would definitly get a chinchilla!! Jimmy is totally a sweetheart and i love him sooo much!!!
mandy 2005-07-06I just saw three Chinchillas at Petsmart and they were cool looking but also kind of wierd, because one has a dent in the tail. I really want one. at Petsmart they were $119.99! My dad likes them but, my mom doesn't really like them. :(
T.E.S. 2005-06-14chinchillas are great animals and mine love to be cuddled, stroked, and played with. they sit on my shoulder, i have a high netted run which i can get in with my two chinchillas. when its set up out side, they love playing in the grass. it is completely chinchilla proof. they have been spooked before, but they just come straight to me and hide in my jumper or in my arms, they trust me! i love my chinchillas(chutney & minty) they are both boys and are gorgeous.
Amansa 2005-06-04Our chin lived in an aluminum mailbox in his cage and loved it. You can get one for about $10 and just rip off the door and file down the sharp edges and it makes a cozy little chin-ebago. Sadly, when he died the box doubled as his little tomb. We wrapped him up like a mummy and put him in it along with his water bottle and all his little treats for his journies on the other side and buried him in the back yard. So far the box has been family dog proof.
Dave 2005-05-21After a month of convincing my mother to let me get these two beautiful gray chinchillas I was deeply rewarded. They are the most beautiful creatures and are like no other pet I ever had. Their capabilities are amazing as my chinchilla is extremely agile and evasive. I recommend this pet for any animal lover who wants to experience something new. However, it is better if you get the chinchilla when it is young so it will not be hostile. The love and sweet looks you will get are worth it.
Ariana 2005-05-08The Chinchilla is so cute and this website gives u tons of information, thanks so much. i am doing a project and this website gave lots of imformation. thanks again for everything.
Gina 2005-05-05Chinchillas should not be kept in a rabbit hutch. They should be kept in an all wire cage made for chinchillas. They also should not go outdoors on a leash. They are a prey animal and if they feel threatened, they can "slip" their fur and so could easily get out of a leash. They do not in general like to be cuddled so do not make a very good childrens pet. Anyone considering getting a chinchilla, for the sake of the animal, should do a lot of research. They are wonderful animals but not neccessarily the cute cuddly creature some people might believe.
Linda 2005-05-01I have had my chinchilla for 6 years she is so sweet and would never harm anything or anyone. i would recommend this animal to anyone. I love my chinchilla!
Cortney 2005-02-16Chinchillia are great pets, but only if you know what you can and can not do with one. They need a special diet and weekly dust baths. They need lots of room, so for a cage plan on lots of space. I have had my chinchilla for over 4 years, & I love it very much. If I had I known everything I know now, I might have thought harder. They also live for 15 + years. They are a great animal to have but understand that they require care.
Ruth 2005-02-14Chinchillas are great pets, especially if you have allergies to cats or dogs. But remember, they do require care and have very specific needs. If you give them the care and attention they need, they are amazing animals to have. Soft, fun to watch, and sometimes affectionate too. Not all chinchillas are created equally. Their personalities are as diverse as peoples. Be nice to your chinchillas and eventually, they will be nice to you. Kelley 2005-02-10
Kelley 2005-02-10My sister has 9 chinchillas (they keep on having babies). They are the sweetest things on this earth. I am allergic to most other small animals :-(, but not the chinchillas. The are so cute and cuddly. They are fun to play with also.

FANNY 2004-09-29I used to have a chinchilla years ago, but the neighbors dog ended up attacking it while i was taking it for a walk on its leash. This really upset me but I eventually got over it and bought another pet. This one was a dog, a very big and well trained attack dog. Quite viscious really, but most Rottwieller Pitbull mix can be that way. Anyways, my dog "accidentally" got loose one day and had a little run in with the neighbors dog who had been tied out on his leash. Ill leave the rest to your imagination. Oh yeah, I highly suggest buying a chinchilla, just be constantly aware of its surroundings, because I know you wouldnt want to lose the only friend you have ever had in the past 18 years and 7 months of your life.
ChinchillaLover 2004-09-10exotics such as chinchillias are cute and all, but they are a wild animal, wich makes it wrong to keep somthing with so much survival instinct to be locked away in a cage! even if it has company and is in perfect health chances are it will develope abnormal behaviors because of the stress!
ive known a friend who got a chinchillia from a shelter. two 2 year old females. their previous home thaught they would be the perfect pets, if their so perfect why did they end up in a shelter? anyways my friend called me and told me what pathetic survivors they were, i thaght she might have exadurated but when i actually met them i realized she was right! they were a mess...pacing back and forth bobbing their heads(this was caused from the stress they recieved at their old home full of kids and from the comotion of the shelter) they were both aggresive and even bit each other when one of them startled the other!
i hope you see my point and think twice before getting a chinchillia
alexa 2004-09-02i recently bought a chinchilla, 2 weeks ago. he is so cute and adorable. they are such sweet animals. they are so gentle and their fur feels so good. i love chinchillas!!! ;-),, by the way my chinchillas name is chin chin!
