Join in celebration of the World Oceans Day 2015 today, June 8th!

In the words of John F. Kennedy, “We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch, we are going back from whence we came.”

In 2008, June 8 was designated “World Oceans Day” by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2002 the first World Oceans Day was marked by the United Nations, and each year since, countries all across the planet are invited to join in the celebration of this vast natural phenomenon.

The United Nations has named this year’s theme “Healthy oceans, healthy planet!

Our beautiful earth is covered by oceans. In fact the oceans make up 71% of our planet while the land on which we dwell is only 29%. Three quarters of the earth surface is a lot of space to learn about and celebrate!

The oceans play a vital role in the health and well being of the earth.

Oceans govern many of the planets systems including regulating our climate and weather, generating most of the oxygen we breathe, and cleaning the water we drink.

This fantastic underwater world is teeming with life! It helps feed us and the incredible animal species offer a plethora of potential medicines. Yet more than 95% of this vast watery world has not yet been explored. In fact the Deep Seas, which are more than a mile in depth and make up over 60% of the oceans, are just beginning to be explored.

The oceans are beautiful to behold and have afforded human beings unlimited inspiration and opportunity. Art and mythical stories abound, as well as life-sustaining opportunities. Today it is estimated that one out of every six jobs in the United States is marine-related.

Here’s a few easy ways you can participate too:

  1. Remind friends and family of the major part the Ocean has in their everyday life.
  2. Celebrate together the beauty, wealth, promise the Oceans bring.
  3. The World Oceans Day website has a list of hundreds of events being held worldwide, with an interactive map to find those in your area too.
  4. Plastic trash is choking our oceans, and the World Oceans Day also encourages support for the “Take the Better Bag Challenge.” The challenge: promise not to take any disposable plastic bags for a whole year
