Canary Damsel, Brightly colored spunk and grace

Canary Deep Water Damsel, Chrysiptera galba

Bring your aquarium to life with the brilliant yellow flash of this streamlined damselfish!

The Canary Deep Water Damsel is very pretty and it’s always on the go!

Along with its classy yellow canary coloring, its a little different in appearance than other damselfish too. The body is more elongated and has beautiful long, large flowing fins. This fellow adds not only color to the tank, but brings a dancing elegance and grace as it constantly dips in and out of the rock work.

These fish generally occur in the wild at depths between 3 to 98 feet (3 to 30 m), but those that are primarily imported come from an area with a much deeper range. They are collected at the Cook Islands where they can be found as deep as 150 feet (45.72 m). That makes them a seasonal item and when they are available they command a high price.

These striking beauties are great for any aquarist, even beginners, but are very sensitive to shipping stress. Diligent care and attention is needed for the first few days in their new home to help them adjust. Once they are acclimated they are very hardy and can live a good long life. They are easy to keep and have a very hearty appetite.

The Canary Damsel makes a great display in either a fish only tank or reef setting, as they won’t bother any of your corals. Like many of the damselfish, however, they do get cantankerous as they get older.

Your best bet is to get just one, that is unless you have a large tank with lots of hiding places. You can house a male/female pair if the tank is 50 gallons or more. Other companions will need to be moderately aggressive or much larger fish.

If you get a chance to obtain one of these gorgeous fish just make sure you are ready for its first few days. With a good habitat and proper tankmates, you will be rewarded with a fabulous high spirited, graceful fish for years to come!
