Ditto
"How can ANY pet have this many talents?"
2010-05-18
Here’s what Cindy says about Ditto:
"Ditto, is a Greater Bush Baby, scientifically known as Galagos, which are prosimians, an arboreal group of primates that are distantly related to monkeys & apes. Bush Babies are more closely related to lemurs, lorises & pottos. Ditto lives in a hollow log inside a big enclosed area, in my house. He is about 8″ tall & weighs about 1 pound. He walks on all 4′s or jumps & hops to get around, he can jump about 20 to 40 feet from a sitting position. He can climb just about anything even a door frame, with his nimble little fingers. I have raised him from a tiny baby, he is 4 years old, & is very friendly with everyone. He loves to sit on your shoulder & play with your hair, lean over & give you kisses, or play with your ear.
Deforestation is destroying their habitat, but they are not yet listed as endangered. Given their common name Bush baby by the indigenous natives because they sound like a crying infant. They make other noises such as croaks, chirps, whistles & a funny bark! Their large eyes, help these nocturnal Bush babies see extremely well at night. They live on the edge of the rainforest, & eat a variety of foods including insects, tiny birds, seeds, fruits, flowers, tree sap, & small snakes. At home Ditto eats a specially formulated commercial dry pellet food, live crickets, & meal worms, fresh fruits, eggs, a specially formulated gum food, seeds, nuts, & fresh veggies. His favorite treats are, sugar free gummy bears, any kind of 100% natural trail mix, fig newtons, tiny marshmellows, & sugar free jello any color.
Galagos are strange, & curious animals, like an owl they can turn their heads 180 degrees, & can hear a cricket walking from about 10-15 feet away. In the wild they leap from tree to tree sometimes as much as almost 40 feet, away using their bushy tail as a rudder. An adult of this species of galagos is about the size of a typical house cat, & have a life span of 10-15 years in captivity, they usually only live about 3-4 years in the wild.
I think Bush Babies make wonderful pets, some people disagree because they require a lot of space, they are awake mostly at night when people are asleep. If neglected & not taken care of properly the galagos cage can be very smelly, because they urinate on their hands when marking their territory with the urine."
