Rockette
"Why does she brave the cold weather?"
2010-01-16

Here’s what Sandra Pineda says about Rockette:

"”Whoever it was that said that squirrels don’t come out in bad weather needs to come over and meet my squirrels! It doesn’t matter if there are 30mph winds, a major snowstorm, or bone-chilling cold, nothing stops the whole gang (there are usually 5 to 6 squirrels in the group) from coming over for their daily treats!

“Rockette” is a Eastern Gray Squirrel. I started feeding her in the spring of 2009. She is the only squirrel that will come to me without any fear, and will sit on my lap or my arm to be fed.  She insists on having two nuts, & if I don’t give them to her, she will get the second nut right out of my bag!  I have other squirrels that will take nuts out of my hand, but I can’t get close to them because she always chases them off!”"

"What a great place to live complete with squirrel friends that love your nutty treats! Thanks for sharing Rockette with us. She does look a little like Rocky, Im wondering if Bullwinkle might show up soon?"

"Hip Hip Hurrah for hippopus Hippopus!… I’m the clam of the day! I may not throw my weight around like that oversized Gigas Clam, or flaunt my colors like that vain Maxima, but I have class!"

The Hippopus Clam (known as the Bear Paw Clam) is not only a hardy aquarium specimen,

but is prized for its very colorful and decorative shell!

There are two species of giant clams that are ‘Hippopus Clams’. The species commonly referred to as the Hippopus Clam H. hippopus, is also known as the Bear Paw Clam, Horse’s Hoof Clam, and the Strawberry Clam. H. hippopus is a hardy giant clam that is easy to acclimate and keep in the home aquarium, as long as it is given enough space to grow. Its close relative, the China Clam H. porcellanus, is not common in the aquarium industry. However both of these giant clams are traditionally harvested for their meat, and they are also highly prized for their shells… (Read more)

Seriatopora hystrix

"Not a place for birds, its just too wet! BUT fish love me!"
2/07/2010

The intriguing Bird’s Nest Coral doesn’t house birds… it can have crabs!

The Bird’s Nest Coral Seriatopora hystrix is not only very attractive, but in nature it also becomes the permanent residence of small crabs. Several species of crabs can modify the shape of the species in the Seriatopora genus and some other types of corals.

A gall-forming crab called Hapalocarcinus marsupialis is one factor in the growth formation of the Seriatopora genus. The female crab will influence the growth of the thin branches to form a cage that permanently encloses her. The male crab, who is much smaller, can enter into the cage and mate with her. Thus the female spends her entire life in a self-imposed “jail”, producing broods of larvae within her protective coral cage… (Read More)

The Beautiful Tropicana Macaw

"Bred for color and a vision of the tropics, that’s what the Tropicana Macaw is all about! But it can be a great companion bird too… intelligent and full of antics!"

The Tropicana Macaw is very pretty bird that comes in a rainbow of colors!

Hybrid macaws are bred for color, and the Tropicana Macaw is all about beautiful colors with each one being a potpourri of its own. This macaw is a second generation hybrid macaw. One of its parents, the Scarlet Macaw, is a species of naturally occurring macaws while the other, the Harlequin Macaw, is also a hybrid macaw. Because hybrid macaws are a mixture of more than one type of macaw, the offspring are influenced by the traits and characteristics of both of its parents. Father’s have the dominant gene, so this will generally influence the offspring’s coloration and overall appearance. Each Tropicana however, is a unique blend of colors inherited from its parentage… (More)

"Looks good enough to eat, but not this strawberry! It is an animal living in saltwater, not a succulent fruit
!"

The Corynactis genus has some incredible color combinations,

and the brilliant Strawberry Anemone is no exception!

The intriguing mushroom corals in the Corynactis genus come in oranges, greens, pinks, and reds, which can be almost fluorescent and are extremely vibrant. These colors look especially awesome with animals that have clear tentacles and contrasting colored tips. To top that off, those tentacles can then be branching tentacles.

The Strawberry Anemone, or Club Tipped Anemone, is an amazing variation to the Corallimorphidae family… (More)

Alice
"Amazing how Alice survives to tell her story…"
2010-01-16

Here’s what Chrissy Thomas says about Alice:

" This is a picture of Alice my 6 foot RTB. He likes when you rub the top of his head and underneath his head right before his neck starts, and if you stop before he is ready for you to then he will nudge his nose back in your hand. He enjoys hanging out in his tree, infront of the window, while the sun is high and bright. Alice is a very friendly snake who loves attention and is affectionate in his own ways."

Here’s more of Chrissy and Alices story…
Hello, my name is Chrissy and I myself own a 6ft RTB. His name is Alice (after Alice Cooper, named before I owned him). I would like to share with everyone Alice’s and my story. I have owned Alice for 2 1/2yrs Back in April he was attacked by a rat (his food) very badly. The rat ate 6 quarter sized holes in his body about 1/4 inch deep. I took him to the vet immediatly, while the doctor tended to his wounds and told me he would heal in time we returned home. Alice became very sick about a week later. He would barely move, and became very weak so we returned back to the vet. The vet pushed for him to be put down. As I sat there in the room holding him crying I said to him ” I love you please dont leave me, you need to fight” with that being said he began to move his head from my lap up to my neck. I knew then that we were going to fight and I then refused to give up, because in my heart and what he showed it wasnt time to say goobye. I began mixing vitamins up to put in a syringe and force him to eat 4 times a day. I would soak him in the bathtub pick his scabs clean and put ointment on his wounds 2 times a day. We did this for 3 months everyday. There were many times I thought he wouldnt make it and came very close to loosing him. I would fall asleep holding him and when I awoke he would be right there either under the blankets with me or laying on my chest. Never once in all this medical attention did he ever show any signs of aggressiveness but I knew he was in pain. I would give him a little childrens tylonal before the baths to help ease the pain while I cleaned his wounds. Then the day came and he began to get stronger and show approvement. It was amazing! I then knew there was hope and let nature now take its course! Alice stopped eating for 8 months after that attack that really worried me that he would starve to death. Today he is eatting like a pig lol i guess to make up for the 8 months he went without. He is a very healthy, lovable, beautiful, boy. I have taken him back to his vet and they are amazed at how he has recovered. Him and me have a very close loving relationship and built a unbreakable bond. Our friends and family call him a spoiled mama’s boy, but to be honest I wouldnt have it any other way!"

Jake
"Jake speaks clearly and is on a roll!"
2010-01-15

Here’s what Timneh Grey Jake says about Jake:

"Jake is an timneh African grey parrot, now one year old, he is a male dna sexed.. love to cuddle loves his mommy, does not have a large vocabulary as yet but hes on a roll. The greatest thing is that the words he does speak, they are clear as day, that makes me proud. Ive seen some timnehs on youtube that can can say the same things but nowhere near as clear as jake (clear as a whistle).

He has learnt to say i lov you when he wants to get his own way. It makes my heart melt how could I refuse? I think he likes getting into conversations with me, and because of this i see him really eager to pick up new words. He not a timid bird and a little aggressive towards the dog or strangers that he does not know, but its ok, the only one he has to love is me. Hes great I recommend these parrots!"

"It sounds like Jake has you wrapped around his little finger. Go Jake! You RULE! Thanks for sharing Jake with us."
