This coral is found in the Caribbean. Some books list it as an "encrusting gorgonian" even though it doesn't grow its' own skeleton. We decided to list it as both a 'gorgonian' and as a 'soft coral'. When we ordered it from our suppliers as a 'Purple sponge', we expected to get a sponge but as you can see it is a soft coral. This Briarium (if it is one) appears to have killed a gorgonian and encrusted the skeleton. It is a beautiful coral that likes lots of light and moderate currents.

Description:
This coral is an encrusting coral that forms flat crusts, knobs, and upright branches but without a skeleton like a gorgonian. It is not photosynthetic.

Lighting - Water flow:
Strong water movement is required. It prefers low light levels. Can live at some depth in the ocean.

Difficulty of Care:
This is a moderately difficult coral to care for. It does not need to be fed however.

Aggressiveness:
This is not an aggressive coral.
