Purple Sponge Coral
Corky Finger

Briarium asbestinum (?)
This coral is found in the Caribbean. Some books list it
as an "encrusting gorgonian" even though it doesn't grow its'
own skeleton. We decided to list it as both a 'gorgonian' and as a 'soft
coral'. When we ordered it from our suppliers as a 'Purple sponge', we
expected to get a sponge but as you can see it is a soft coral. This Briarium
(if it is one) appears to have killed a gorgonian and encrusted the skeleton.
It is a beautiful coral that likes lots of light and moderate currents.
Description:
This coral is an encrusting coral that forms flat crusts, knobs,
and upright branches but without a skeleton like a gorgonian. It is not
photosynthetic.
Lighting - Water flow:
Strong water movement is required. It prefers low light levels.
Can live at some depth in the ocean.
Difficulty of Care:
This is a moderately difficult coral to care for. It does
not need to be fed however.
Aggressiveness:
This is not an aggressive coral.
