Picture of a Purple Sponge Coral
Briarium asbestinum (?)

This coral is found in the Caribbean. Some books list it as an "encrusting gorgonian" even though it doesn't grow its' own skeleton. We decided to list it as both a 'gorgonian' and as a 'soft coral'. When we ordered it from our suppliers as a 'Purple sponge', we expected to get a sponge but as you can see it is a soft coral. This Briarium (if it is one) appears to have killed a gorgonian and encrusted the skeleton. It is a beautiful coral that likes lots of light and moderate currents.
