Salt Water Fish Care An Introduction

Salt water fish care is different than caring for other types of fish. Salt water fish have special needs and it is important for you to learn as much as possible to ensure they are happy and healthy.

The most important aspect of saltwater fish keeping is to take the time to select the right salt water fish for you. Determine which type of fish you like, how much experience you have, and how much care you are willing to provide. Taking care of salt water fish is usually more demanding than freshwater, since many have special requirements that are not always easily met. Some saltwater animals commonly sold in fish stores are, by todays standards, impossible to keep for any length of time. Also, the size of the tank is important. Salt water fish need more water per fish and most are larger than fresh water fish so you will need a larger tank.

Another important part of your salt water tank is the filtration system. Basic filtration is the same for both fresh water tanks and salt water tanks unless you are planning to keep corals and other reef type animals in which case, additional considerations must be taken into account. Many pet stores will sell the tank and the accessories you need in one package. When first starting out, this might be a good option. Keep in mind though, that for a salt water fish tank you may want to add additional filtration elements. Make sure you tell them you are planning to have salt water fish so they can advise you of any specifics needed.

Look for a protein skimmer, good lighting for your tank, aragonite sand, and some type of live rock. You may also need a UV sterilizer. A good heater is important to keep the temperature stable. In addition, look into salt mixes made for fish tanks, water test kits and hydrometers.

After you get your tank and accessories, read the manufacturer's instructions to ensure you do everything necessary to provide proper salt water fish care. This is critical to maintaining a healthy aquarium.

Make sure to set the tank up and let it run before adding your fish. Running all the equipment in advance will help you determine whether there are any problems so you can correct any issues prior to putting your salt water fish in the tank. After you have made sure your tank is fish friendly, you can safely add your fish to the tank.
