Julian Rogers - 2012-05-17 Update, If you find a small ringtail possum small i mean around 2 to 2 and a half inches long and weighing around 30 grammes, firstly and most important keep it warm dont just wrap it up get a hot water bottle or something that gives of constant heat over time and im sure i dont need to say not to hot.Books give out all sort of exact temperatures and so on but when it comes down to it you have to use your common sense and make sure that the joey cant get in direct contact with the heat source and at the same time it has to give the heat the joey needs,i tend to wrap the bottle at least twice in a blanket. Also get to know your eating habits of your Possum as they all eat diferently, you need Di vetelact powder 60 grammes of warm water and one scoop of powder,i have had sucess with goats milk but please do not try this as it is not 100% tested but i have had good results. No other types of milk should be given to very young Possums,i only did the goats milk as a last resort and whether it was the milk of the pure determination to live that worked, but the extremley young joey came through and was later released.julianrogers01@gmail.com
Julian Rogers - 2012-05-17 Hi All. Ringtails and Brushtails can live together,SHOCKED YOU MIGHT THINK,all types of Possums need not only the right food to eat ie leaves flowers shoots etc thay also need the right trees to nest in. In the right area with plentyfull of native gums and varied flowing trees both types can and do live quite close, this does not mean they get on all this means is there is enough trees of differant types and plants of abundance for both to life. This is rare because we are invading on their envioroment not the other way and because of that they then invade our space which WE HAVE TAKEN FROM THEM as far as I'm concerned not enough study has been done in Ringtails especialy as they firstly vary in colour so on that basis there is a diffence, now what you might find is that you have grey ringtails and if you tried to release a ginger Possum (thats my name for them ) into that envioroment then thats when possibly you will get the probs anyway I could go on and on if you need help then please email me, I have hand reared Possums of around 30 grammes upwards and know them and their needs and THEY ARE NOT PETS

Charlie Roche - 2012-03-03 I would take him to a rehabilitator in your area or a shelter. Possums are extremely difficult to raise and most will die. You need someone with experience and hopefully they can raise it. I am sorry but they are almost impossible to rear. I don't know why.
Louise - 2011-12-23 Ringtail Possums are not pets. They are wild animals and should be left to flourish in the wild. If you find a sick or injured possum please get it to a registered wildlife carer or vet asap as these animals need special care with an aim to release all animals. Please do the right thing by these animals and don't keep them confined in a cage, they should be free
Jan Beswick - 2011-12-20 We have moved recently to Katanning WA and have acquired a possum in one of our very old conifers. Lately we have put a bowl out with fruit in it and it's gone in the morning.... we try not to disturb it. Thanks everyone for your input and what to feed our new furry friend.
Jess - 2011-10-02 We have just found a baby possum today. It was in the backyard with my dog so we had no choice to take it, I have put it in a cat cage wrapped in a blanket with water. We are thinking of letting it go tonight (when dark) but we are worried the mother won't take it because it will have human scent. What should I do?

Micky - 2011-10-04 Don't let it go if it is a baby. You need to take it to a native animals rescue. If you let it go it will NOT get picked up by its mum. Do not feed it cows milk it will kill it you need possum milk. If you want to keep it you need a licence and training in how to look after possums. It will not drink water if it is a baby you need a syringe with a teat with possum milk. If you keep it with out a licence you can get charged $700 to $1000 or more for keeping it. It's best chance of living is to take it to a native animal rescue place hope i have helped good luck :)

michele McKenzie - 2011-05-23 Please ring Wires before you release Monkey Boy back into the wild. When a possum is relocated it can be dead in a week from predation or territorial behaviour from other possums.

Charlie Roche - 2011-05-24 How do you release a bottle fed possum back into the wild? What is wires?
Jo Birtus - 2011-05-20 You cannot feed a baby possum cows milk. You can get possum milk substitute from your vet or a good pet suppliers.....young possums need possum suppliment milk!

Charlie Roche - 2011-05-20 You can also start for two or so feedings with pedilyte to make sure they are hydrated and then switch to Esbilac which is a puppy milk substitute. You have to sorta squeeze the milk onto their tongue with a bottle or a syringe. They swallow but do not suck. Don't squeeze formula down their throat, just lay the formula on their tongue. You also have to use a wet/warm cotton ball and wipe against their genital area for them to go to the bathroom for the first few days.
ashley - 2008-05-02 I have a baby possum at my house and I am taking care of it. It is a male and he is the most adorable thing ever.

The Ringtail Possum, often called just the 'Ringtail', got its name from its curled tail.
