There are other nutrients that can be used to keep the color in your little fella. Here is an article which covers a few of them. Color Factor

The only place I can think of is to email Rik at Golden Cockatoo in Florida. He has a web site.

Just add paprika(seasoning) to your bird food cup, about 1/2 teaspoon per fill with your brand of canary food. Keeps my birds dark red. JD

Thanks JD for the advise. Re: Paprika, Can I use the commercial Paprika available from the supermarket? Will this be safe for them? I'm currently feeding them also chopped/grated carrots and they occasionally eat them also. just wanted to make sure I'm feeding them the right color food.

Can any one tell me if both male and female hiding behind a flower pot is indicitive of pre-nesting behavior? Thats how hoppy and brownie spend part of the day. Their cage is suspended on the lanai wall with a nest already in it.

Two little birds sitting in a tree KISSING. I would say a good start. Now it just might be their safe place that they dfound as the cage is suspended but I think a little more than that.

My hoppy and brownie get along good with my 8 parakeets. All of them have the run of the lanai during the day, share food and seem to socialize. They retire to their respective cages in the evening.

Sounds like a neat place. I love it when the birds, bunnies and in my case deer have room to roam and yet in a safe place. Great for them and me.

Colored canaries and the vibrant color came through genetis and also when breeders realized that certain foods would deepen or augment the color of their canaries. This was especially true of the red canary. Most enthusiasts will recommend "color feeding". Color feeding is just feeding foods to enhance color, and this method is used with yellow and rose ground colors, as well as reds.
Berries, beets, sweet potatoes, squashes, tomatoes, and cherries contain carotenoids which enhance color. Red and orange can also be increased in many breeds by simply adding cayenne pepper and paprika to the diet. Experts recommend using a carotenoid concentrate to bring out the potential in your red canary's plumage. Have fun and enjoy.

Hi, Mary There are 2 ways in which to add coloring to your canaries food both have too be administered carefully. 1 is too purchase a color agent called caropyhll red which is added too the water. 2 is too buy red factor food from haiths .com www.haiths.com. These are specialists in bird foods. You can find this food under the subtitle color foods. 3 if you go on line to www.superpets-online.co.uk and put food colouring or quiko they have it as well. From the looks of your canary you want the red but be carefull if you feed too much you get what we call the burn effect where the colour is 2 deep. color food is given during the molt from around August-September. Some food coloring has too be added too a soft food made for birds called soft food. Again haiths sells this too called either emp or cede. I use cede. Good Luck

My mother has a male red factor canary. For the last six months the canary started to tear up the bottom of his cage and hiding in the corner under the water dish. When we would check on him he would just open his beak. This week we bought a little nest and he actually is nesting in the nest. Is this a normal action for these birds?

These little guys like a safe and quiet spot to hang out in. A nest works. It is normal.

I have 2 red factor canaries and they're approx 9 months old. I have had 3 eggs laid and fell to the grate and broke. That's approx a week ago. Now they're sitting in a cup and I don't know what to do. Don't they lay in the spring? I don't want to raise canaries. HELP I planned on separating them.

I am just starting to learn about the canary. I have always wanted a singing canary and my favourite colour is orange so to have an orange singing canary I would be all in my glory. I was told that my canary is not a red factor so I had no hope. A friend of mine gave me some red granulated stuff that he feeds his canary to keep it orange, I tried it and mine is turning colour. What is this stuff and where can I buy it?

I would just like to say with relation to the comment that canaries are not interested in toys that this is simply not true. We have had canaries for many years and it is our experience that the canaries derive lots of pleasure from all their toys, swings, ladders, mirrors. Our latest canary is a Red Factor and she too plays with the toys most of the day. I feel it would be cruel to deprive these birds of toys from which they get so much enjoyment.
