Suki - 2012-03-31 I have a pair of White Fronted Amazon( female and male). They live in the same cage together. I brought them few months ago, the breeder told me those 2 Amazons were hand feed. After I spent few months with them, they still bite me pretty hard (bleeding sometime). Especially when they are in their cage or near cage area, but when they were somewhere not near their cage, they are all right. Is there a way to teach them not to bite? Should I separate them in a different cage?

Guess is they are last years babies and have been handled to some degree. Male and Female Amazons are going to pair bond and they will be protective of their cage and territory and very little you can do about that. Even as singles amazons can be protective of their terriotry. Let the have it and bring them out on a perch or just out as often as possible and handle them as much as you can. Possibly they will let you (allow you) into their territory one day. Separate cages - if they have always been together, I would let them remain but you won't be first in their life. They will start puberty around 3 and you will be an outsider. They will have babies and you will enjoy them and maybe you'd like to hand feed one and keep that one for yourself with its own cage.

My husband seems to think they are both males. We would like to sell them do you know what we should ask for them each??? And when we should seperate them from parents??

The reason for the higher cost is they have no idea how long it will take to actually sell the bird and they are responsible for all costs associated with keeping the bird. If you want to sell them, then I would go from $200.00 to $250.00. When to remove them from the parents - you should do that now. Amazons are a little frisky/indpendent much of the time. White front is calmer but not a mjaor exception. The earlier the amazon is hand fed by humans, the gentler the bird is going to be. They should be handled, held, cuddled. Just lay them on a towel on your chest and let them get used to humans. They should be pet and talked to now - also separately and together. Many breeders start hand feeding at 10 days old - before their eyes are open and many others incubate and feed from day one. Where people get testy amazons is because they weren't truly hand fed, hand held and then lack of socialization. It is hard to sell a bird that can't be handled.

His feathers were never clipped and his territory was the entire house. He always followed me around the house, sleeping with me in bed, on the couch, waiting for my exit from the shower stall, and almost never leaving my side when I was home. His estimated age was 26 to 30 years. I wish he had lived longer, I miss him terribly, and I will never forget my best little buddy in the world.

I myself own a 3 (he'll be 3 this month) old Lesser White-Fronted Amazon named Sam and he is my world. He'll do anything he can to show off to me or anyone that comes into the room, although he can be a bit jealous of my bf at times. He comes walking into the kitchen looking for a hand out of food :) He says pretty bird, hi, hello, I love you, and imitates the sounds of water, sneezing, brushing your teeth, and several others. As previously stated by a few others though, his articulation isn't very good. Anyways, thanks for the lovely site and good info!

George S. - 2010-03-27 I am just putting this out there because I don't want anyone get to confused on what to feed your amazon. You can feed it bird seed, BUT ONLY SOMETIMES. Even rarely feeding it would be much better. Seeds have too much fat and not enough nutrients so the bird's nice bright colorful feathers will soon decrease and be not as stunning, and they will look overweight. With all this happeneing to the poor little bird he or she will become not as friendly and very demanding and destructive. Feed the bird an ORGANIC PELLET DIET. It is very healthy and I guarantee that the bird will love it much more. I know this first hand since I'm a bird breeder and specialize in this species of Amazon Parrot.

He only articulates a few words clearly like pretty bird, hello, hi Mikey, what, etc. He also says alot of other words and phrases, but they are not very clear. I enjoy my time with him. Even after 25 yrs, he still makes me laugh.

I am desperately looking for a male for her as she has become so lonely and quiet since he has gone. Although my pair live in an aviary I am in with them every day so that they are not only very lovable to me but also have the freedom to do their own thing when they want - I am not interested in breeding them, as I think there are enough unwanted birds around already.
