Anonymous - 2011-09-11 Try neons.
David Brough - 2011-09-11 Try small feeder guppies too. Neons are a bit expensive, no? I'd give him a few days if not a week to get acclimated as well.
Jeremy Roche - 2012-03-17 Check water conditions and temperature as well.
Ron Thompson - 2012-03-17 Thanks for the info.
scott - 2012-05-12 The gar family will play with food before eating it. Then they decide if they really want it or not. Can take several minutes. Also they often don't eat right away. Feeder fish can live in tank for several days.
Robert Saris - 2011-08-13 I just bought a needle nose gar yesterday and I tried to feed him goldfish but he didn't eat them. The fish keeper said that's what he fed him is there something wrong with him or is he just getting used to the tank? It's 100 gallon.

Jasmine Brough Hinesley - 2011-08-14 I would give him a couple days to acclimate to the new environment - he is probably nervous right now. You may also want to try other types of live food in the meantime - such as shrimp or crickets. He might eat frozen shrimp that have been defrosted as well, although most don't like frozen foods.
David Brough - 2011-09-11 Are you feeding the same size goldfish as what the keeper used?
chrissy st jules - 2011-10-10 the first persons right just let him get used to his tank i bought a older oscar last month he's about 10inchs long and 2 wide and he didnt eat for 2 weeks until he was ready and used to his surroundings and i tried everything different size gold fish and feeders pellets brine shrimp i mean everything and he wouldnt do any thing it almost had me worried but now hes eating like a champ :) :) hope it works out for ya
john - 2011-12-20 Odds are that the gold fish are too round, try feeder minnows or guppies.
Alex Gtp Parrette - 2012-01-20 mine ate as soon as they hit the water. it helps to have smaller fish, like very young minnows, in the tank
Shawn Handley Jr. - 2012-04-05 Mine ate the same day I got him -- like only 3 or 4 hours after I got him.
john - 2011-12-19 Hi, I just found one of these at petco and was wondering if I should get it it and will i be able to keep it in a 20 gallon with a green puffer and some senegal bichirs. Please answer fast because I have a feeling someone else wants it too.

Anonymous - 2012-01-13 These fish need about a 55 gallon tank and need to be fed live food like goldfish if your bichir and puffer are too small they will get eaten but you could have those fish in there for 3 months and then upgrade
Flo - 2009-02-27 If feeders are stored in the tank with Gars will they eat when they are hungry or get use to the feeders and go with out food? I have been puting shrimp plets in the tank because I'm afarid that they are not eating the feeders...

Charlie Roche - 2012-01-27 Scroll up in this Animal World article and you will note that these little guys are carnivores so if it will fit in their mouth, they wil probably eat it. So I'd remove the babies to another tank before they are seen as fish food. They can be fed small pieces of brine shrimp.
john - 2011-12-05 Hi, I heard of a fish called the malaysian halfbeak and I was thinking about getting one. They look alot like this fish and are livebearers. They only get 3 inches long. Any suggestions?
bonus question: is there a way to comment on a group of fish instead of just one fish(like commenting on cichlids instead of say, firemouth cichlid)?

Charlie Roche - 2011-12-06 Yes, you can place a comment on the group page. Easiest way is to go HOME at Animal World. Then enter cichlids, goldfish whatever in the search. You will come up with the general page on that group and can enter your comments at the bottom. Have fun.
melva fessler - 2010-03-23 I can not seem to get my Needlenose fry to eat, they won't take guppy fry nor will they take brine shrimp. What can I do?

Editor's Note - 2010-03-24 Needlenose fry? How cool is that?! How big are they? You could try squeezing a hard boiled egg yolk through a cloth or other types of live food. Check here for other types of food for fry.
motasem - 2010-05-29 give them the tetra company food tetra min baby see it on the website below www.tetra.net
Dave - 2011-06-19 Mine takes dead lancefish from a thin cotton thread suspending it in the tank..... Also broke his nose off swimming into the glass, he is fine, just has a shorter nose now.
keith - 2011-03-25 I just added a Asian needlenose gar to my tank and in the processes the tip of his bottom jaw was damaged and fell off he seems fine and is acting normal but I am wondering if it will affect his hunting and eating. The piece that fell off seemed rather small and he opens and closes his mouth fine. Please reflect your knowledge.
denny - 2010-06-13 Will gar hurt the fishing population in a lake, such as crappie, bluegill, or bass?

anonymous - 2010-08-03 I don't know (if they survived, they probably would find a way to overturn the ecosystem, though), and any responsible owner wouldn't even ask that question. You should never, EVER release captive fish into the wild. That includes ones that you find wild! (They can catch non-native diseases from the water or tankmates, diseases the fish have no resistance too.) This ESPECIALLY applies to non-native fish. Not only can they introduce disease, but if they survive (big "if", that's another reason not to do that), even a fish with a comparatively small size limit, like the needlenose "gar", would likely wreak havoc.
The babies of most fish would be fair game, causing population drop, and even though it is probably small enough that something could eat IT, I know just from seeing this fish in pet stores that it is both fast and agile, not to mention that the fact that they're paranoid. (I realize there's probably a good reason for this, but everything I've read says that in some way or another.) That makes me think it would run rampant on the off chance a population develops.
If you don't believe me, look up these fish on Google (or whatever engine you use) "snakehead", "silver carp" and "walking catfish".
The Grim Reaper - 2011-01-22 I personally wouldn't know the personality of the fish but NEVER EVER release a non-native fish species into a lake, stream, brook, any body of water that isn't a pond that you built for fish or your fish tank. Please as a part of the next generation DON'T. My generation already has a lot of work cut out for us as it is. And if you did release the fish, Fish with small minnows until you catch it.
Mitchell nimmer - 2010-03-31 I am looking for a new fish for my 55 gallon tank. I have a senegal bichir in there now. Will these two get along nicely? if not then what other fish will work with him? Thanks.

john - 2010-09-05 I have 3 bichar and 4 different types of chiclids in there and my needle fish does fine, even during feeding time. So as long as they're too big to swallow, you should be ok with putting needlefish with anything.
Amanda - 2010-11-03 Yes the Needle Nose Gar will get along with him. With a Bichir, you don't want a fish smaller than 3 in. But if you are interested in adding a Gar then you need to add only bigger fish. The Gar is a glutton; it will eat anything. Also a Ropefish will get along really well with a Birchir. All these fish require the same type of environment (temp, pH, hard water, etc.).
The Needle Nose Gar is a surface dwelling fish that resembles a twig floating in the water!
I have the same problem mine won't eat anything.
Try neons.
