Gabriella - 2012-05-07 I've had my 5 comet gold fish for over 9 years, in a 40 gallon tank. I have one 9 year-old Cory Cat in there as well. I recently bought them a different type of fish-food (TetraFin - Goldfish flakes), and they literally started dying one by one. I started treating them with the 'Melafix' medicine I bought from my local department store, it hasn't done anything. Also, my tank is very old, about 12 years-old. But, I haven't the money to get a new one.
They've lived peacefully and happily for years. I don't know why they are all dying. I've had them since I was a child, and seeing them all go like this makes me sad.

Jeremy Roche - 2012-05-07 Why did you treat with the Melafix? Could just be dying of old age if they are all around the same age.
Gabriella - 2012-05-07 I thought that they maybe had some-sort of common goldfish disease. Several people told me to treat them with Melafix to see what happens.

Jeremy Roche - 2012-04-21 These comets normally come in horrible conditions and a lot of the time full of disease. They are mass shipper primarily for feeding other fish.
Katie - 2010-03-04 Just as this website explains above, comet goldfish require filtration and aeration just like other aquarium fish. They shouldn't be kept in bowls. A full grown comet will require a minimum of a 30 gallon tank. Even a small 1 inch goldfish shouldn't be kept in anything smaller than 2 gallons, and that's for only one comet TEMPORARILY! If you're really wanting to keep a fish in a bowl, I would recommend a betta. Although they actually prefer a warmer temperature (78-82 degrees F), they usually live at room temperature with no problem. They will not require filtration as long as you change out the water once weekly (make sure you are using "conditioned" tap or well water or spring water, and make sure it is at about room temperature so as too not shock the fish). Bettas are also different from most fish in that they do not require aeration. Bettas actually breathe from the air/water surface. Keep in mind, however, that you can only have one betta per bowl/tank. *If you get a female betta (shorter fins), you can sometimes keep more than one per bowl/tank, but keep in mind that should the fish begin to fight, you will have to have a second container to separate them.
Mandy - 2011-12-10 Hi, I have had a fan tailed goldfish for about 5 years and he was very healthy, my tank is 18'' x 12'' x 12''. I recently bought a comet to accompany my original fish and they seemed to be doing well together. Today I noticed that the fan tailed fish appears to have fin rot as his fins are looking very tatty. Also the comet seems to be 'bullying' the fan tail and the fan tail seems scared of him and is hiding in the corner of the tank. Please can someone advise me what to do.

Sal - 2012-04-17 I had a comet for 3yrs, it was a beautiful pick in color, happy little thing it was, right up until I thought why not add more fish, looking really empty in there with just 1 fish (big tank) so I bought 6 of the same, and my gums did my fish panic and get scared of the new arrivals. The other fish, being young where picking on my fish, and shortly after my fish died, felt like my friend had died, so word of warning, if your gonna introduce fish, do it one at a time, over a period of weeks to months.

Jeremy Roche - 2012-04-05 As fun as it may be. It is always best to not have your hands in the tank unless they are completely clean. Soap and perfume can be harmful to the fish.
kathy - 2012-02-07 Can I put black moor in with a comet goldfish? Will they fight? Think I put one in there with her but not long

Alex Burleson - 2012-02-08 Yes, Black Moors, and Comet Goldfish can get along. They will not fight. Goldfish generally can be placed with almost any other Goldfish.
Jeremy Roche - 2012-03-10 They will get along. Make sure the take and filter is large enough for these fish. They create a lot of waste.
Can someone please tell me how heavy 2 inch goldfish are?

zach - 2011-10-10 that is a hard question to answer because the weight of the fish does not have to do a lot with the size so much as the fish's eating habits. i have had many fish 2,3 inch's long and not one was the same weight.i would put a bowl of water on the scale and put the fish in and subtract the weight of bowl and water from the fish. hope this helps.
James - 2011-10-26 That's easy Alan, all you need...ready?....is a FISH SCALE. har har
The Comet Goldfish is much like the common goldfish, but is a more reddish orange color and has a much longer, deeper forked tail fin!

My comet was a copper color and in the past month he's developed bright orange spots on his sides. Is he ok?
As they age they do change colors and can get different patterns.
My comet is getting a bit of black around his bottom fin. Is it natural?
Perfectly normal.

Can I put a malaysian trumpet snail in my aquarium with 1 or 2 comet goldfish?
I would recommend apple snails if you don't mind
