Natalie Fether - 2012-05-20 I have read through all the diseases and still cannot figure out what the disease is in my tank. I have hard water that is softened by a water softner, have a 55 gallon tank with sand, mostly real plants and just a few plastic (the plants are growing fine) tropical fish (plecos, catfish, glass fish, neons, koli loaches, zebras) have snails which is under control filter is aqua clear 70 on the dip test strips the nitrate 40 ppm is good, the below .5 ppm is good, it shows i have soft water, the alkalinity is high and the ph is high. After talking to the pet store they said the last two are just fine I tried to lower the ph and alkalinity with the meds to lower but it was killing my plants and was not making any difference on the dip tests. The only thing I could find to lower it was using distilled water to fix it but was told not to by the petstore. I can tell who the next fish to die is. This only happends one fish at a time. They act normally, but inbetween the nares I can see a peach colored mass (?) inside. Last night my last hatchet fish died. I predicted the day before this was gonna happen. I could see this peachy color in its nose and its eyes started turning red, they bugged out a little but this does not normally happen. After it dies its eyes do not cloud over. Within a few days to a week the next fish will die or show signs of the same thing. Any suggestions?

Maria - 2011-05-30 Hi, my brother is out of town and left me with his yellow fins. In these three months of taking care of them I saw never saw any strange behavior until I got to my office this morning and saw that one of them (if not mistaken, female) was lying dead on the sand without and eye and a hole on its stomach...I've been feeding them properly and last night when I left they were all doing great. Can someone please tell me what happened? I'm new to fish caring and would like to know a bit more on how to take good care of them. From what I read, the tank my brother has put them in (now three, used to be four) isn't too big and I've seen them push the sand so it caves up. I currently have two male and a Female in the tank, is there anything I need to be aware of?

David Brough - 2011-06-06 Actually, it sounds like aggression on the part of one of the fish. It could be breeding behavior or just territorial in nature. How big is the aquarium and how many yellow fins do you have in it? Is there any sign of one of the fish being aggressive towards any of the others?
raghu - 2011-08-09 Dear Maria, what substrate do use? There could be a chance of fish trying to dig and ended up with a piece stuck in its throat or it could have hurt its eye to your rocky arrangements. Or it could be due to stress.
Chris - 2012-05-13 2 males and 2 females in a tank is a bad ratio to have. You want to have at least 3 females for every male in the tank, or they will be harrassed to death. They have been mounding up the sand to establish a breeding area, which makes me think the female was killed because she wasn't interested in breeding at that time. I know this is an old thread, but I figured I should respond to help others with the same problem.
Andy - 2012-04-30 i have a fish that just died recently. It had clamped fins, bloated eyes, and a loss of its scales. I have a few other fishes that have clamped fins but no other symptoms. I tried using coppersafe but it doesn't seem to work. What other medication would help? Please help me. I have this huge kio fish that seems like it;s about to die and I would love to keep him but it doesnt seem likely right now. It goes to the bottom of the tank and stays there. It only moves occisonally. How would I be able to save him? and if the fish is infected, should i isolate him so it wont infect the other fishes?

Jeremy Roche - 2012-05-10 What type of fish? Have you checked amonia levels? This should always be done before medicating.
Darlene - 2012-05-10 Andy, there are a few different medications suggested in the above article where the conditions include clamped fins. Please try any of them. If it's a fungal issue and you have an adequate tank to isolate your sick fish, always do so, otherwise, treat the entire tank. If it's a parasite, that would benefit all other fish anyway. Hang in there.
Darlene - 2012-05-10 I forgot to mention the most important thing, the cause of this issue very likely started from the water condition. Take the time for regular changes and keep that water clean. Invest in a testing kit, not just the strips. After being plagued with sick fish every month or so, I started changing my water every other week at 15-20%. I haven't lost a fish in over a year. I also inspect them often to note anything changing with their behavior or fins. The sooner you detect a problem, the easier it is to treat.
leo - 2012-05-07 All my monos (5 of them) are dying day by day. 60 cm by 30 cm by 30 cm tank. They are 6 cm from fin to fin. Freshwater. Food for them. Anyone knows why?

sridhar - 2012-05-04 Hi there all fish lowers, I have 3 inch long flowerhorn fish. From last 2 months, I had noticed that he was not eating food because he can't see it. He is eating by judgement. Neither his eyes are popped out but both pupils seem little bigger. He swims lethargically and not at its actual way. Skin looks normal. Have given tetracycline 3 times. But of no use. Water conditions are good enough. I am not able to make out exact symptoms from your chart. Pls.advise.

Laurie - 2011-11-26 Hello My Fellow fish lovers...I have a problem. I have two new red cap orandas that we transfered from our small pond in our backyard-(1st year)-to a 36 gallon indoor tank. We spent alot of $ on a really good filter, everytime we feed our fish-1x daily 4 pellets, one of our orandas seems to get sick and floats upward, stays there and sometimes floats sideways for a day. We panic, put him in a small bucket with water, conditioner, a little salt and oxygen and feed him peas Overnight he recovers slightly but still isn't right. We feed him peas when he acts up again still isn't right. He once got messed up really bad the first time we transfered him after being in pond all summer) , cause we didn't condition the water....since then this floating goes on every time we feed him. Can someone PLEASE help me..I'm afraid we are going to lose him...Thank you...happy Holidays to all

Charlie Roche - 2011-11-26 I found just two things but either could be the problem. The first is constipation and the symptoms fit. This one is easy cuz you just change the food. It would explain why feeding it a pea would help. The second is gas bubble disease gas bubbles and you might want to check this article out.
Lory - 2011-12-10 Keep feeding him peas for a few days. Then just feed him veggies for a while. if you do give him pellets soak in water till they sink. Than place in tank. Also does his body look okay...no injuries from the transfer- tank from pond?
kelsey - 2011-12-29 i think we have the same problem because my fish bernenne is not swimming. We just cleaned his tank today but he is struggling to move and he wont eat at all.I dont know what kind of fish he is but it looks like what you have. sheila meredith - 2012-01-19 Dear red cap oranda owner, i too set up a huge tank a few months ago and brought 4 of these fish, one is always sickly, they suffer constpation and get swim bladder problems and cannot swim to the bottom of the tank, i put in florets of brocolli which they love (cooked and softened) also cauli, but they do love broc, i give mine the flake fish food, this time though i do not think i will be successfull, the other thre are doing well, they are a lovely temperament fish, and should not be put with goldfish, who usually bully them, all the best with your poorly fish, i.ve also turned out the lights on the fish tank- these are cold water species and the lights warm the water up. good luck
leah - 2012-05-01 I had a fish that would do this. I read that it is because the fish is constipated and so the swim bladder is pressed on making it hard to swim...I made my fish fast for a day or two and then fed him and it seemed to help clean out his system and he has since stopped with the scary sideways swimming on the top of the tank.
