I have 2 blood parrots from 3 weeks now and they just hide and do not eat. Somentimes thay lay on the sides and look like they not even breathing and they will not eat also, but when i get close they run to hide again. I don't think that this inactivity is normal. What should i do?

Check you water levels right away. How is your tank movement?

I checked the water at the petstore and is fine. What do you mean by water movement?

Just make sure they have their own areas to hide if needed.

It should eat it depending what it is. During the day is normally good. Maybe try a different pet shop or order online.

They sell this tiny green and red floating food.

All other shops sell floating food and it stays in the clay pot when there is light, comes out when the room is dark or when there is dim light.

I have a blood parrot and I dont know much about them, I've had him 2 months. For a week now he has been laying on his side at the bottom of the tank, but when I'm at the tank he will swim to the top and act o.k., then when I walk away he goes back to the bottom. I had the water checked and it was o.k. What should I do ?

Loneliness maybe a reason, I'd advice u to add another blood parrot to your tank. Cauz blood parrots prefer n love staying in pairs or a group..

Parrots do get dark spots when stressed. Any tankmate changes? Check water conditions.

Same as above. Check water levels. Parrots will develop spots when stressed.

I noticed a sluggish reaction in my fish and they kept twitching on the rocks and staying in the top of the tank in the corners. I was told it was ick. I have been treating the tank for the past 2 days and my fish is still sluggish, laying on their side and beside objects, but they will eat. What else can be done or is the liquid super ick cure too strong? This is what I was given at the pet store.

Are they showing the white spots associated with ick? Test your waters levels. Ammonia may have spiked. Do you have enough water and air in tank?

have you added Epsom Salt and raised temp?
  • Anonymous - 2012-03-14
Yes I do and know today they are laying on their side and not eating at all. I have the tank full and good filtration. I'm so sad:(. I don't know what else to do for them. I know they are only fish.

Sometimes there is just nothing you can do like you could have the absoulute best fishtank in the world with the most high powered equipment and the fish could still die. It's nature though in your case have you ever heard of the disease velvet that could be the cause. It is like ick though it is worse and harder to get rid of hope your fish get better.

I have a tank full of aggressive fish! I just purchased my first blood parrot! The post indicate that blood parrots are non-aggressive, but yet the pictures show a fire mouth which is aggressive. My question is can they survive in an aggressive tank?

The Blood Parrots should not be in an aggressive tank. These fish are a man-made hybrid with deformities bred into them that makes it hard to defend against other fish. They are best suit for larger community tanks.

Thank you so much for your reply! I only have a problem with the fire mouths in my tank, but I believe that if I remove them it will be ok!

CAN YOU PUT A BLOOD RED PARROT CICHLID IN THE SAME TANK AS A BALA SHARK FISH?

Depending on size of the 2 it should not be an issue. Also make sure they arent overcrowded. Red Parrots are a fairly peaceful Cichlid.

I have 2 love heart blood parrot in my 55 gal tank. they are shy but not much, they love to irritate my severums. I dont know why they hate severums so much. In the same I have Green terror, blue dolphins, jellybeans etc,but those 2 hate only severums. It's a funny scene how they jointly chase my 2 severums.
