Editorial review:
Like a lot of young people in the 1970s, Mark Bittner took the path of the “dharma bum.” When the counterculture faded, Mark held on, seeking shelter in the nooks and crannies of San Francisco’s fabled bohemian neighborhood, North Beach. While living on the eastern slope of Telegraph Hill, he made a magical discovery: a flock of wild parrots. In this unforgettable story, Bittner recounts how he became fascinated by the birds and patiently developed friendships with them that would last more than six years. When a documentary filmmaker comes along to capture the phenomenon on film, the story takes a surprising turn, and Bittner’s life truly takes flight.brbr“A fascinating love story with wings.” —iBoston Herald/ibrbr“[A] charming memoir. For devoted birders everywhere.” —iReader’s Digest, Editor’s Choice/ibrbr“[An] inspirational saga of one man finding his life’s meaning in the most serendipitous way.” —iSan Jose Mercury News/ibrbr“Instructive, surprising, sweet.” —Gary Snyder, author of iTurtle Island/i and iMountains and Rivers Without End/i

Reviews from people who have bought this book:

4 stars. a CONURE love story --- (I have had 2)
Mark Bittner lived on the streets of San Francisco for 15 years. He was lucky br /in the fact that he was not a drug addict nor an alcoholic. He just had no home br /nor did he seem to want one. He is a spiritual man. After being homeless for br /so long he was given the job of caretaker for an elderly lady. Her home on br /Telegraph Hill was a fly over for the wild parrots of Frisco. br /Mark needed a friend and the parrots needed a friend so they found each other. br /This book is about how he became part of their flock. br /He is writing STREET SONG now. He is married, shows his film and signs his br /books. br /This book has some very sad parts. You will laugh and cry. br /You wont be sorry you bought and read this book....its wonderful...YOU WILL br / ENJOY IT.................I DID.

3 stars. It's cute, but nothing special
It's a cute story, with a bit of a fairy tale ending, but personally I couldn't get past the fact that the guy is a bum. He brags about not paying rent for 28 years, and continually alludes airily about being on a "journey," that's more important than actually earning your keep, apparently. br / br /I found his lifestyle to be a huge distraction.

3 stars. wild parrots
I bought this boook for my Mother, she liked the book but feels it was a script from the tv program that he did also all the pictures in the book were black and white... why bother putting them in there ???

3 stars. WASN'T CLEAR THAT THERE WAS A BOOK AND DVD.
WAS DISSAPOINTED AS I THOUGHT I WAS ORDERING THE DVD AND GOT THE BOOK INSTEAD.

5 stars. portrays the beautiful video pertaining to the title
My friends love this video about these remarkable parrouts and their lives in a special place. I bought this book for them as it portrays the specil qualities of the video and more
